opportunity in adversity

It's my new motto so when the dust settled after fires devastated my neck of the woods I took the opportunity to clean up an old, old trail that the fires had cleared out and in doing so found this unique trail feature

Tom Tom Multi-sport GPS watch v. Garmin 910XT

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

So I'm thinking I need to step up the tech on the bike a notch, and with Santa still wondering what to bring me, I'm wondering if anyone's used one of the Tom Tom Multi-sport watches? A like the idea of a device that I can use off the bike.

The watch form factor appeals as I've been meaning to get back in the pool. Both the Garmin and the Tom Tom have a swim function. I'm not going to set any King of the Waves, but I do get sick of counting laps!

Bike Rental (Early January)

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi All,

I've got a buddy coming to visit me in Sydney from back home in the USA in early January. I'm looking to take him trail riding, and am looking for a bike with around 5 inches of travel to rent. I've had a look at Re-Zycle's website, but I was just trying to check out other options.

Just wondering if anyone would be interested in renting out their bike for two days in early January (sometime between Jan 1st and Jan 6th).

Nearby Trails to OMV Hornsby trail

Hi all,

Looking for suggestions on Nearby trails around OMV.
OMV is more than nice enough to do multiple laps, but after 7-8 laps I usually have enough.
I tried the firetrail at the end of the road but that only leads to some houses and some walking tracks

Are there any trails closeby within riding distance (2-5km)?? don't mind firetrails. Just looking to increase the distance and break up my routine.

Cheers,
Mario

Tooth-friendly gels?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

This week I managed to lose a front tooth trying to tear open a Gu with my front teeth while riding Sad - a process that I have done many times before, without any negative teeth impact.
For context, it was a dead tooth (root canal work a couple of decades ago) and I'm at an age where my teeth are starting deteriorate around the many fillings I had as a result of growing up before they put fluoride in our drinking water.
I've only ever used Gu as it sits OK on my stomach and I like the chocolate flavour.

Enjoy your fitness.

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

A good friend of mine once said to me: "most people will never know what it feels like to be truly fit". This statement had a profound effect on me - it's a staggering fact when you think about it. I was reasonably fit at the time, but I had certainly spent the majority of my 30s being quite unfit. Of course there are degrees of fitness, but if you're reading this post, chances are you're way fitter than the majority of people your age.

Storing a bike

Just a quick question, is it ok for me to store my bikes upside down? Im a bit worried about fork stanchions not getting any oil and my hydro brakes getting air bubbles moving around?

For that matter is it ok to store vertically aswell?

Cheers,

Jono.

I am going to spend a week up at Elizabeth beach in January 2014. Any decent MTB trails to ride in Myall lakes Nat Park or Wallingat State Forest. Happy with firetrails doesn't need to be anything too hairy!

Training for 100km

Has anyone got any tips or training regimes they wouldn't mind sharing for someone who is really trying to get their fitness levels to the right standards to complete a 100km race. I only really have time for 1 ride a week as I normally work 6-7 days a week. Most of my fitness comes from the gym and exercise bikes which I understand is not ideal but am willingly to take any tips...

Determination I have in abundance...

Night Riding - decent trails

Troops - just looking for general info on night riding and decent trails.

I was thinking of trying Muppets/sniggle etc. Is there any etiquette in this part of the world or just go for your life??

mountain bike hire near Old Man's Valley?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Next week I'll be visiting Sydney for business. I'm planning to take a day off to go mountain biking in Old Man's Valley (Hornsby). Can anyone recommend a store where I can hire a mountain bike for the day? It would be best if the store is either near the Convention Center in Sydney (close to where I am staying in the city) or walking distance from the Hornsby railway station (since I'll be taking the train to reach OMV).

Thanks in advance for your help!

BTW: is Old Man's Valley the recommended place to go if you have only 1 day to ride near Sydney?

Looking for advice on 29er wheels

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy myself a new 29er wheelset. Budget is anywhere up to $800. I only ride XC trails and won't do any crazy DH trails with it.

The bike is a Specialized Epic Comp Carbon and the stock wheelsets weigh a bit more than 2kg, so I'm looking for something lighter.

What's a good wheelset out there ?
I have contacted Greg at TWE since his wheels seems to get pretty good reviews and his warranty seems to be good.

Are carbon wheelsets worth it ?? As it will almost cost half of my bike's cost.

Cheers.

Is a 29er faster than a 26er

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Below is a preview, click to read the full post

In the market to by a hard tail to compete on there are some very good bikes selling with top spec components that are sub 10kgs but are 26 inch bikes
Is there realy that much difference in how much energy it would take to finish a race at the same speed and time as it would take on a 29er

I have a 26 fun bike that I love plus my duel suspension 29er that I have done a couple of races on cant realy feel that much different between then

Common 'newbie' queries on buying or upgrading a bike. How do a few local shops fair?

A lot of questions are asked in the forum here relate to buying a new bike for the first time, or (more often I think) upgrading from that first ride.

We'd like to think of the average user here as pretty knowledgeable, and that you'll find plenty of good advice in places like our MTB Gear Forum. That said, we were interested to find out how the pros in some local bike shope would respond to some common queries:

1. I'd like to take up MTB riding and have a limited budget, what's the best 'cheap' bike for me to buy to start?

2. I've been riding some local firetrails on my Huffy hardtail and feel ready to take my riding to the next level, take on some rougher terrain & maybe small drops. Say I have $2,500 to spend, what should I be looking at? Talk me into spending more if you can!

3. My 'significant other' has recently taken up MTB riding. They don't have much gear. In fact they ride in old tees, board shorts and trainers. What's the best gift under $100 you can recommend giving to a relatively new rider?

4. Store's choice (optional): aside from the above, what's the most common type of query you get and what does the customer usually end up buying?

Head on over to Local Bike Shops: Responses to common newbie queries to find out how they went.
