Blue Mountains MTB Trails

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hey guys,
I want to plan a MTB trip to the Blue Mountains and i am trying to find some good trails (preferably, mostly a down hill run). I have heard that some DH trails go for hours, but i have not been able to find any. I don't mind if it is not a completely DH trail, but a flowing, long Ride, just not something like a xc trail. Can You please give me the names of some trails and advice on how the trail was, HOW LONG THEY ARE, or any other tips. This is my first MTB trip and i am fairly new to the sport so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks, Dan

Wheels - Have you damaged a wheel?

I am looking at getting a spare set of wheels to save my lovely carbon hoops for races, but it occurred to me that I probably only need to get a rear wheel as I would assume that wheel damage is on the rear 95% of the time as it bears the vast bulk of the weight. No point in wasting cash unnecessarily.

Do you agree or disagree?

[Mod. moved to MTB gear - you're talking about MTB wheels, right?]

Replacing Hayes trail with shimano XT

Hi
I'm thinking of replacing my Hayes trail disk brakes for some shimano XT brakes. Can any one tell me if this will work. My bike is a kona hoss so I bought the bike because I'm around 130kg and it was sold as there Clydesdale bike.
I'm going to try and do it my self.
Will the rotors that r already on there work with the new brakes or will I have to replace the rotors as well.
I'm going to get them of CRC.
Any comments about the best way to do this would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Tim

New York City

Does anyone know of any good 1/2 day or 1 day adventures from or around New York?

Possibly there in April for other reasons than riding but may go insane without burning off some energy.

Open to non-riding adventures too.

Manly Dam consultation sessions: Free BBQ and a chance to have your say!

Reverse angle drainage

Here's a bit of welcome news: Warringah Council are running two consultation sessions on the future of Manly Dam. Even better, these are to be run at the Dam and accompanied by a free BBQ lunch.

If you haven't been to the Dam in a while perhaps this is the perfect excuse? Take a ride, grab some well earned post-ride lunch and let the council know what an important venue this is for riders.

Dates are in our calendar and are:

Sunday 12 January, 12.30pm - 2.30pm
Saturday 1 February, 12.30pm - 2.30pm

Details from council here:

http://www.warringah.nsw.gov.au/your-council/pla...

This is all part of the consultation process which will end on Monday 10 February, so if you can't get there be sure to give your input in some other way on how the park (and of course mountain bike track) should be managed.

More details on the consultation here:

All aboard Tristraining

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

In February, once I get back from overseas, Tristraining starts again. Just thought I'd take the opportunity for a heads up for anyone interested in doing a 100km event this autumn - you know, Capital Punishment or Convict 100. Anyone interested in doing a good, solid training ride for one of these two events, I'll be going to do several reconnaissance rides on the GNR once the course direction is finalized where I'll be practicing the course as well as rides in the Blue Mtns.

Fox fork seals questions

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hey

I about to change the oil, wipers and seals on my fox 32 forks and just wanted to ask if anyone had a trick or ideas for a home made tool to help seat the seals. This will be my second time doing the seals and I had a bit of trouble seating the new ones the first time. I know that fox makes a seating tool but am not interested in buying it as only do the seals a few times a year so not really worth the money.

Thanks Chris

Should I punish myself?!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I'm looking for a 2014 challenge and was thinking about entering another race - possibly Capital Punishment. I haven't done a lot of racing before - in fact, only 2 attempts at the Wollombi Wild Ride. To give you an idea of my level, I did the 60km race last year and completed in 3:30, although work commitments meant I didn't get much bike time in the run up to it (excuses, excuses)

LOST Giro aeon helmet at ourimbah Sunday 5 Jan

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

My name is David Paviell. I was at the Ourimbah MTB XC tracks on Sunday 5 Jan. I left my helmet on the car roof at 12pm and when I went back to see if it was there I was told that It was picked up by 2 guys in a grey hatchback. I'm not sure what happened to it from there but I was also told that some people saw it on a sign near the tree tops adventure park. I asked at Tree Tops and they had not seen it.
It is a blue and white team Garmin Grio Aeon helmet. It had a distinctive New Zealand sticker on the right side.

Training advice

So, after a few years of disappointing race results I've finally managed to negotiate some time for training, with conditions of course, with the minister for fun and finance.

Having 2 very young kids, 20 months and 5 months, there is very little time available to pursue our own interests. I really enjoy events but hate being underprepared and getting physically smashed (kinda takes the fun out of it). The final straw was The Highland Fling, which I won't delve into other than it took me to breaking point and beyond.

What I'd be super keen to learn is how best to spend my limited time on the bike? So, what did I get approved?

A few nights a week, small children sleeping dependent (so not always guaranteed), for half an hour to an hour riding around our local streets (I'll be using the MTB with fast rolling tyres). Riding at the weekend isn't garuanteed but I'll be pushing for it most weeks. Even then it'll be limited to a couple of hours.

So, what training would get me fitter and enable me to be more competitive, still at the not so pointy end of the race mind you.

I was thinking intervals but not entirely sure how to build an interval program, how to know when to increase the load, when to rest etc. Any advice or pointers to training literature greatly received!!

Now I need to get some night lights and pray the kids sleep at night Eye-wink

4WD lights for your bars?

I'm all set for lights, but...

Was looking for something completely different (OK - not completely - LED lights for a trailer board) and came across these:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2PCS-10W-CREE-LED-Wor...

Modular lights for the bars (not sure I'd put this on my helmet)? Claimed 800lm for $40AUD.

Worth a look if you want something on the cheap.

Bars not beverages!

What is everyone doing for nutrition on long rides...besides bananas!I've been using Swisse carb bar which worked well for me on the convict last year. Now it looks like they've discontinued this bar which is a real pity. My understanding is that it's mostly Carbs that need replacing besides the salts. So what are you using and what would you recommend?

OMV access

Anybody know if there are any other ways of accessing the OMV tracks?
Specifically looking at whether there is any means of access off any parts of Normanhurst (western side of Pennant Hills Rd), or even more specifically, anything to link up Pennant Hills Park with OMV which minimises road riding and hike a bike stuff.

Specialized Sworks Epic World Cup -First Ride Impressions

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

After picking up my new 2014 Sworks Epic World Cup just before Christmas, I’ve had the opportunity over the holiday break to give it a good work out, and thought this an opportune time to share some of my first ride impressions.

for the full review goto:

http://sxcracing.com/specialized-sworks-epic-wor...

But for some early insights:

"....the first thing you notice is the agility of the bike. This being a mix of the slightly more aggressive geometry of the world cup, with steeper head angles and slightly shorter chain stays..."

Help from the Trail Gurus!

I plan to ride from Northbridge to Palm Beach (where you get the ferry from) and would like those of you who know the trails well to help me try and fit in a whole lot of trail riding where I can rather than being on the road. Any little bit will make the ride better so don't hold back!
