Anyone knows a good wheelbuilder on the Northshore

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I'm looking for someone serious but who would not chargean arm and a leg and would accept to re-build with a used rim and hub.

Katoomba singletrack

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi, I'm new here but have been riding upper mountains for a while. I am interested in doing a regular ride early (7am) Saturday mornings on the Katoomba singletrack if anyone is interested. I am getting a bit bored of riding alone and would like to ride with others socially and to help progress skills.

Cheers,

Parking at bottom of the Oaks?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

As you might have seen, our maps now allow for POIs (points of information) to be added and I've put in a few to try and show the way.

Was going to mark the information, toilets and car park at the bottom of the oaks. You know - by the gate on Bruce Road.

However, can anyone please tell me - do you have to pay to use this car park?

The NPWS sign I can see on street view shows parking, toilets and information. I assume there is a tap here too for water, but does anyone have any idea of where to find it? Is there also a picnic area here?

Incorrect cassette order. What to do?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Short story.

Bought new cassette, wanted 11-32T but didn't change option from 11-28T, D'oh.

Do I;

Harden up and deal with 28?
Return it for 11-32T?

Pros as I see it;

Harden upingness is increased.

Cons as I see it;

Found spread between 11-32T was too close anyway and nearly always flick 2 sometimes 3 cogs at a time up or down. 11-28T is going to be even closer in ratios. (Haven't checked what cogs/teeth are different)

Just a post to see how the Bmorcians are faring after yesterdays awful conditions. I know of at least 1 person who lost their home in Springwood. (Not a bmorcer) I'm sure there will be others. Take care everyone.

Turbo trainer

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Any recommendations for a good indoor turbo trainer?

I managed to get fitter the other year by spinning etc but my own trainer is lousy, it's noisy & doesn't feel anything like real riding.
I am after a trainer that will accommodate 26" to 700c wheels, is quiet & gives a realistic load rather than a simple brake type resistance that stops the wheel dead as soon as the pedalling effort is reduced.

I'd rather be in the hills but distance & time is prohibitive.

Any advice welcome, cheers.

Since changing to tubeless 4 years ago, I had my first ever puncture today. The Stans sealed it - momentarily, before more spurting, and more sealing, and so on.

Creaking Carbon Frame

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi guys,

I currently ride a carbon fibre LOOK 996 and am having some mechanical/ frame issues. After repairing a knock that had developed in one of the rear pivot points, it has now developed a severe creaking sound from what appears to be near the bottom bracket. Dad's a mechanical engineer by trade and we've had the entire back of the bike off with all bearings been replaced and even with the fitting of a higher spec bottom bracket. It primarily becomes vocal whilst pedalling, and very slightly when the rear suspension is under load.

Basic GPS for Navigation

I want to buy a GPS system for my husband and my mind is just spinning with all the options out there - I'm looking for recommendations. He already has a bike computer tracking his time and distance - so he doesn't really need the sport functions, just the navigation. We live in Ecuador and he rides in very remote places - my greatest concern (because it has already happened) is him getting lost. I want him to have a system that will help him to get himself back home if he gets off track - getting lost in the jungle out here is not a sweet adventure, it has the potential to be a fatal one.

Data collection: what's your stem stack height?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi Team

I'm hoping to borrow 5 mins of your time for you to measure and post the stack height of your stems. Just to be explicit, the stack height in this case being the height of the clamping area that grips the steerer tube, i.e. the bit between your top cap and the spacers under the stem. Can you please measure and post the height and the model of stem?

I know I can get the proper shimano chainring bolts from ebay.
but will these fit as well?
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/blacksp...

I'm out of action anyway. but since its comming from the same place & saves me a heap of postage. I was wondering if anyone knows if these will fit?

I'm also getting a chainring. My chain ring is toast as well.

Total fire ban & closures for Sydney National Parks (13 Oct)

Today (13 October) NPWS are reporting that due to a total fire ban, many National Parks in Sydney and surrounds are closed.

Eg. for Ku-ring-gai Chase:

Total Fire Ban

All tracks and trails across all of the Metropolitan National Parks are closed Sunday 13 October 2013 due to Total Fire Ban. West Head Road is closed, however the basin campground will remain open.

Many other parks around Sydney have similar warnings. Many thanks to the guys who put in all the trail status updates to alert us to this - nothing worse than turning up to a trail and finding out it's closed Sad

More details on NPWS page:

Garmin Edge Charging

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I use a Garmin Edge 500 to record my ride activities and then on activity completion I upload via USB plug-in to Strava, which automatically recharges the battery to 100% ready for use next time, but recently my unit shut down after about 6hrs of recording on a single ride and I hadnt finished the days ride, given that I thought the Edge 500 had a battery life of approx 14-18 hrs I wondered if the constant USB charging from around the 90 - 95% mark shortened the battery life ?

Deliberately hit by van on Morgan Rd Firetrail

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

FYI, a bit shaken.

I was out for a ride this morning and got deliberately hit by a white van on the Morgan Rd fire trail. I'm okay and I was not moving at the time as I'd pulled over and was on the side of the track. He was doing about 5km/h and I'd looked away.

I looked up to see a deliberate side swipe swerving 2m towards me and he knocked out his left rear view mirror. Couldn't move fast enough standing over my bike with bushes to my right.

Rego was DAF001.

He then got out yelled at me and started grabbing at my bike. I'd picked up his mirror from the ground.

Husky 100km - Mud - Anyone have a view?

Hi Folks,

I am thinking of doing the Husky but a mate who has done it before says that he thinks that "the bog holes will still be there but the rest will be dry and sandy". I am looking for a second opinion as I have not done the course before, and while keen, I don't want to trash the bike with mud just before the Highland Fling.

Anyone have a view?

St Ives sniggle

A can of worms about to be opened perhaps? But a few questions about the sniggles parallel with Mona Vale Rd between the Wild Flower Garden and Forest Way turn-off:
1. Are these trails legal?
2. Who is/are the landholder(s)
3. Who built these tracks?
4. If legal, can I help maintain them? If not, then I don't want to be caught trespassing!

Over to the brains trust...
