here we go wheel size debate

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/technology/t...

Giant bicycles have an analysis on their web site touting the benefits of the 650b wheel size over the 26" or 29" siblings.

It makes the argument that the 27.5" wheel size is the holy grail. As a prospective new bike buyer I'd like comments from some one who has owned all or some of the different wheel sizes. I ride locally so it's a mixed bag as you know.

Bare Creek Bike Park Plan

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Just spot that on http://www.trailflix.com.au

The Belrose Waste Management Centre (BWMC) in Northern Sydney ceases landfilling municipal solid waste no later than November 2014 and an exciting opportunity will emerge to redevelop the site for recreational uses. Previous (preliminary) planning investigations and community consultation have confirmed a demand for a bike park at this site and an Enhancement Fund of approximately $3.5 million will be available to turn this vision into a reality.

Plastic election signs

Would that interested any trail builders or clubs if I/we gather some of those 'eye polluting' plastic election signs?

Anyone had any reviews on one of these?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bike-Repair-or-Storag...
It's a cheaper version of the Topeak one but it still looks ok and is a third of the price.
Just wondered if anyone had already purchased one?

Dry weather and loose rocks

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Whilst out for a lovely morning ride at Terrey Hills, navigating down the steep bit at end of Long Track, hit some loose stuff, over the handle bars I go, down the side of the embankment.....If only I had my GoPro on! Batted an bruised, dislocated finger and not happy that I had a 30min slow ride back to the car and another 3 hours at the hospital, and it started so nice!!

3 days in Hobart, recommended trails?

I'll be heading down to Hobart for 3 days in the coming weeks. Does anyone have recommendations on good quality tracks around the area. Great single track, with technical stuff, AM stuff etc. don't want to waste time in heading to something that isn't that good. Have heard that North South track is pretty good, so will prob ride that at some point.

Bombed at the Dam

I was the target today of a black and white bomber on the Nursing Home trail at Manly Dam. I don't recall this magpie last year, is he taking off from a new base this year. It was at the intersection of Nursing Home trail and the top of Eva's track, had two good shots at me! At least he isn't like the Butcher Bird and strikes at the nose. Any sign of him yet? There wasn't today.

2013 Wollombi Wild ride, how'd you go?

Very happy with my 3:36, not very happy they dropped the singlespeed category!

It was hot and dusty out there, managed to keep the cramps away until the last km.

Swooping Magpies... are cable ties the answer?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Like me, magpies tend to be born in September but luckily my parents didn't dive bomb everyone who came near me when I was a baby. Unfortunately one of the little critters seems yo have made a nest on one of the main roads near me and on two occasions been observed to physically attack people's helmets. I've seen people put long cable ties over their helmets in an effort to deter the nasty things away. Can anyone vouch as to whether it actually works or any other ideas on avoiding nasty surprises with black and white feathers?

Camera advice please EOS 650D, EOS M or Nikon D 3100?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I am after some advice and as quickly as possible (looking to buy tomorrow)

Why?
My 14 yr old daughter is about to start photography at high school and is desperate for a "decent camera" for this as a birthday present which is this weekend. She had in mind a full on DSLR until I started showing her the prices of the ones she liked the look of. Yes I know if it was bike parts for me it would top shelf but we are budget restrained on this particular issue and I would like to get out of it for under $600.

What?

Reminder: Terrey Hills Perimeter Trail closed until October 18

Early Morning Ride

Given the popularity of the Perimeter Trail at Terrey Hills, it's probably worth highlighting yesterday's trail status update (and discussion: Long and Perim trails closing for 6 weeks from Sept 4).

That is, NPWS are conducting maintenance on the Perimeter Trail which will be closed between intersections with the Long Trail and Smiths Creek Trail until October 18. This effectively makes trying to use the Perimeter Trail pointless.

That is, except for riders who are still keen to ride the Long Track, who can start at the West end of Perimeter (eg. take Mallawa Rd then Bulara St to the trail head).

If you rarely venture that way, it is a nice change and an opportunity to head along Cullamine Track and do the Duffys Track (Slades Lookout) out and back perhaps. Throw Cowan out and back in as well, or explore some of the lesser known fire trails South of Booralie Road (Sandy, etc) and you've got yourself a pretty decent ride.

P.S. Thanks to Brian for great photo: midweek sunrise at the end of the Long Track. Gee, some people are keen! Eye-wink

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service’s off-road cycling campaign this September.

This is a a great chance to get a knowledgeable guided tour while on your bike. It offers a rare chance for riders to discover more about the trails surroundings and what makes the trails so special from environmental, geological and cultural point of view.

XTR (M975) kit on 2013 Giant Trance 29er 2 - rear Brake caliper not fitting?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi all,

I recently bought a Giant Trance 29er (2) and a s/h XTR grouppo.

There were a few changes to be made (screw type bb vs press fit, etc).

But where I'm getting stuck big time is that the rear XTR (IS) caliper - even with an adapter - isn't getting anywhere near grabbing the disk?

The caliper needs to get closer to the frame, but all the adapters put the caliper further away?

Do I just need to buy a bigger rotor? Thanks Smiling

Long and Perim trails closing for 6 weeks from Sept 4

Did a night ride tonight and came across a few road barriers on Perim and Long advertising trail works from Wed Sept 4 until Oct 18th - the trail will be closed it said.
Something about creating a better trail for walkers, riders and bicycles.....anyone know what's up? Assume they may fill in that big dip near the golf Course so tankers can get thru but the rest is pretty good.....bitumen anyone?

Cherrybrook to Dural

A few people might know of a fire trail behind Cherrybrook fire trail, I've only explored it breifly, in fact it was one of my first off road rides.
I've heard that you can get from here, down into the valley and up onto the plateau which Dural is on, i've heard it might pop up towards the top of the quarry road track?

Just if anyone knows about it, just looking for a way to link the Cherrybrook and Quarry road rides up.

Cheers!
Chris
