Details:

Just what it says on the related forum topic. Wanted follw Rob's ride from this time last year and look at the last section (this makes up roughly Km 72-92) of the 100Km Dirtworks course. The plan is to meet at the West ferry (turn left, not right bottom of the hill), leave cars there then cross on the ferry riding the 5Km or so to bottom of the climb so as to be warm for that. Then ride the Womerah Range trail, turn round and ride back.

The plan is to pretty much follow the route listed by Rob in the discussed topic (a bit less than 60km). Anybody who has ridden here before and would like to play tour guide it would be appreciated as I have not ridden here yet.

Although Womerah is fire trail, it has some tough climbs. Of course it's on a ridge and you have to get up there in the first place via one of these climbs:

http://nobmob.com/hill_profiles/4504+4503

That won't be the end of it though, there are some nasty pinches along the way in both directions.

As this is a supposed training ride please don't come planning to pootle along. Also come prepared to ride for 5-6 hours in the wilderness (we cannot count on that visit to St Albans and have to leave time for potential mechanicals) - basically that means with plenty of water and food for the duration.

Note: As this is my belated birthday ride, there will be Beer and fairy bread for all upon return to the cars!

See you there! Laughing out loud

Who's in?

Hey Sean, just curious, what ride are you planning on doing? Either way I will be there but just looking at what has been posted, I'm not sure if you are referring to what the original ride was posted as or what we actually did.

I don't know my way around there so if we don't get anyone signing up that does, doing the same route as before means I can load it in the GPS for directions.

Cheers
Brian

GeordieAndy's picture

I know some of the names down so far are quicker than me and I don't want to hold the group up...........

dangersean's picture

Brian, I had intended to follow the route you guys actually did. http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/em...

Sorry if the link above comes out a bit messy..

I still do not like to answer any questions on the term 'roid'. Pace will be set by the group and I suppose we should keep in mind it is intended as a training/recon ride for Dirtworks... Come along... We leave no man (or woman) behind Eye-wink

Rob's picture

Don't forget there will be several bail out options and we can split the group that way if there is demand. For example, if some of the group are tired they can sit and relax at St Albans before trundling back on the road and skipping the part from Shepherds Gully on.

On a 'training' ride like this I'd have thought the 'fast' people will be trying to ride 100Km race pace (ie, not over extend themselves, keep the HR at endurance levels). This should mean that the 'slow' people can still keep up but will have to be flogging themselves a bit and therefore won't be able to ride as far and will have to bail at Shepherds or something. Does that make sense?

Brian's picture

Rob, when we rode up the Shepherds Gully part and we eventually turned around at the bottom of the big hill and came back. If you continue on does it eventually loop around?

Rob's picture

It's 25Km from top of Shepherds Gully to the ferry via the fun stuff and Western Commission.

That trail on the meeting is 58Km and progressed around 6Km along GNR before returning to Wisemans (another 8.5Km). So if you continue along and come down Western Commission it would be (25 - 8.5 - 6)Km longer = 68.5Km. I like the sound of this option Smiling

christine's picture

so can someone please wait for me - hoping not to have to bail out... hoping! Stuart! where are you?
sean...still on for fairybread and beer?
oh! and where do we meet - no! more importantly, do we have to catch the ferry and if we do please could i possibly get a lift out with someone? My ute it too low for those ferrys...

GeordieAndy's picture

I've never been up here so will have to find my way as well. I live in Manly so can give you a lift if you wish, then you can be the navigator! Smiling

christine's picture

be great thank you!!!! i know the way to St Albans and Wisemans and all that but not sure where the 'meeing point' is - shall askRob to send me blondie proof details - rob?!!!

Brian's picture

I will be parking near the kiosk at the main ferry and riding to the other one. There is more parking there and it means when we get back you can eat, relax and your car is just there Smiling

Rob's picture

Blondie... click the directions link in the meeting. If you don't have the link setup your 'directions starting address' in your profile.

dangersean's picture

Yes Blondie, beer and fairy bread upon return to the cars! I can also give you a lift if needed (i'm in D.Y.)

Rob, I like the sound of the extra loop back too...

Looking forward to this!

spart's picture

I live in Allambie Heights and would have space for 2 extra in my car if anyone wants a lift... I need a navigator Eye-wink Alternatively I can catch a lift with someone else if possible.

Bart

christine's picture

we will have to organise a proper 'car pool' calvalcade closer to the day!!

Andy Bloot's picture

Happy birthday Sean

We are moving (goodbye northern beaches)
So have to have people look through the house this morning
I need to be around to make sure our anti-social dog doesn't bite anyone
(or does bite someone if needed)

Looks like a great ride and a great crew - enjoy
DAMN IT

Brian's picture

I couldn't do a full loop as google maps doesn't recognise a section of Settlers Road. What's a good program to create routes and then export them to my Edge 305.

Will be on a flight back from India that day. Was so looking forward to this ride...

Next time.

Brian's picture

I was playing on bikely last night. Below is the route and you can show then elevation profile if you want to see what's installed for us Smiling

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/262620

christine's picture

that was mean..but at least i can't see the elevation parts.
How long are you guys thinking this ride is going to take?

Brian's picture

Christine, let me help you out Eye-wink

Woomerah Elevation

christine's picture

that looks perfectly horrible! i will now be in a state of panic all week over this...nightmares even - why are you so mean Brian? Sean - I will need more than one beer after that

Nic's picture

1,556m of climbing, 1,578m of descent! That will make a big difference.

GeordieAndy's picture

I'll be there to share the pain Smiling Most of the guys on the list I know are quicker than me so you'll not be at the back on your own!

But it looks pretty good aside from 2 huge climbs!

dangersean's picture

I think the climbs will keep us all honest, so don't worry too much blondie Smiling

I will bring an extra couple beers for you too...

everbody all sorted to get there for Saturday?

christine's picture

i cant remember who i am going with! god and it's only monday... Smiling

Rob's picture

Sorry Sean... was really looking forward to it, but madness this week means just don't have the time to prepare a bike. Yes - I have two to choose from and they both need some work! This isn't supposed to happen so time for N+1, eh? Eye-wink

On a local ride I might not care, but heading out into the wilderness on machinery that you know needs a few tweeks is asking for trouble.

Doh!

dangersean's picture

No worries Rob, shame though... was looking forward to smashing a few uphills with you.

Well, for my birthday I received a garmin 705, would it be a good idea to programme in the planned route, and if so, how do i do it??? and who has it for me to DL?

craigs's picture

Just search the ride or the area...

There are links from within the site, search for them if you dont have any luck on the http://www.motionbased.com/ site.
Use Explorer with this site too!!

Brian's picture

Hey Sean, if you follow the instructions here http://nobmob.com/node/8382#comment-30069 this worked for me. I have it loaded on mine but it would be good to have another person with the map loaded. I have only used the feature of following a course once before so i wouldn't want to be the only person with directions?
Cheers
Brian

christine's picture

so not only have you, Brian, mapped out a horrible ride but now you and Sean are going to get us all lost?
I will need to take vast quantities of food along for this ride.. i now have visions of endless riding into the night in search of our way back...with you two insisting that your garmin things work just fine!

Brian's picture

Christine, haven't you read the disclaimer http://nobmob.com/disclaimer Eye-wink

If you don't know where you are going, you cannot expect to be lead or guided. You must have your own maps and plans and be able to get home safely no matter what. You might ride for some time with a buddy, but then become separated or they might just take a dislike to you for no reason whatsoever and ride off. You must assume you will find yourself alone, in the bush, in a thunderstorm, at night, with a broken bike, and be able to get home safely.

dangersean's picture

Don't worry blondie, we'll be all fine, buy maybe put a beer in the pack in case we don't find our way home? Then who cares, right?

Brian's picture

Should be good. I have only ridden my mountain bike once in the last 6 weeks so I can't wait for this.
PS. The weather is looking perfect as well Smiling

Brian's picture

I went over the bike on Tuesday and are ready to roll but unless I can get through a mountain of work tonight and tomorrow I'm out Sad

lozza6's picture

likes flies! Shocked

Chrissie, keep panicking... This ride isn't for the weak.... Thats why I'm not going! Sticking out tongue

Brian's picture

Well, I haven't made a dent in my work so I am definitely out for this one. At this rate come 3rd May I am going to be suffering big time Jawdropping!

christine's picture

this isn't good news - now we have to rely on Sean who doesn't know where he is going or how to use his gps thingo!
what an adventure!

Lozza, you are very very mean by not coming along

craigs's picture

Sorry to Hijack the thread.....Hey Joe sent you a PM been trying to contact you about this ride about those parts...
Craig

dangersean's picture

C'mon Loz, you know you want to!

Tien knows where we are going, and I have loaded the profile on my new toy. I'm not too thick, so am sure i'll figure it out and not managed to get us lost!

S.

lozza6's picture

I won't hold you guys up... you did bill it as a training ride after all Smiling

I'll leave you roid girls and roid boys to it Eye-wink

Laughing out loud

christine's picture

Sean has kindly said he will give me a lift out to this ride in the morning but forgot he can't drive me home (hmmm!) Please could someone possibly give me a lift back? I come armed with fooooooood!!! Smiling

Nic's picture

Have a great ride!!!

GeordieAndy's picture

I can give you a lift back, if you have food. Smiling

dangersean's picture

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/em...

Hope I posted this right? if not, Rob, how do I show a motionbased the same as you do?

thanks for the ride today everyone, I had fun... 70km's and plenty of smiles.

Rob's picture

If you want MB embedding, post the URL to the dashboard, not the invitation:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/da...

Looks just as planned, but with a lot of stops. Looking at the HR - you weren't exerting yourself much. But... did blondie survive? Eye-wink

dangersean's picture

I did cruise yesterday, will be out there again probably on my own to give it a crack at race pace before DW100.

As for blondie, she went very well, and barely grumbled once! You'd be proud of her Rob Smiling

christine's picture

Thank you all for a great ride, particularly Andy who, if you hadn’t come along I would have spent most of the day with my ipod! And Sean who did do the ‘roid boy thing and came back for us on the odd occasion!
It was a really nice ride and wasn’t nearly as nasty, horrible as you lot all made out, in fact, dare I say it I enjoyed 97% of it (hindsight is a wonderful thing!)
Anyway, I feel much happier now I have done that and for the roidys that I held up due to my lack of speed – don’t worry, I don’t usually do ‘roidy rides so doubt very much you will be out with me again, I just had to do that one with Dirtworks loooooming....
Thanks to the birthday boy for driving me out and for the most heaven sent beer I have had in ages and for Andy who so kindly took me home!
I had a really nice day.

ps piss off Rob, there weren't THAT MANY stops! lol

Rob's picture

The MB profile says Sean spent 1h50 (or 29% of the time) standing still! Sticking out tongue

But well done blondie. Just remember that after 70Km in the race you have to climb up Woomerah and ride to St Albans. Do you feel like you could have ridden back along that ridge? Eye-wink
