How do you... erm... train?

Training - less is more?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

With all the recent wet weather, and because I don't have a road bike, I decided to supplement my training over the last couple of months by going to the gym. I've been doing spin bike sessions including high intensity/ interval sessions. I also do some strength training like squats and leg presses once or twice a week. I still manage to get out for a 3-hour endurance ride at least once each week, but overall my volume of riding has been way less than in previous months.

I've never enjoyed using indoor trainers, but I recently discovered that my local 24 hour gym has spin bikes and virtual "classes on demand". You select a ride, and the road/ trail appears on a huge screen in front of you while a narrator tells you how hard to set the resistance and how hard to push yourself, depending on the program. There are advanced hill climbs, high performance sessions, moderate sessions, interval rides - you choose what you're up for and away you go. Most rides are in the US but there are a couple in Italy, and quite a few are off road (eg White Rim trail in Utah).

Base Training

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi guys,

Long time reader.. you know how it goes.

I've got a question on base training. Been doing some kms on the road bike lately and looking to build my endurance up for some 100km mtb races. Also I might join a road racing club (but we'll leave that for another forum).

Do you follow a training program that incorporates base (aerobic) training in the lead up to a race or race season?

How long is your base training period?
How do you measure it (hours/km)?
How do you measure your exertion (hrm, power meter etc)?
Any other tips or tricks you do during?

Bike Yoga

Does anybody know of a good yoga class on the Northern beaches which is cycling focussed?
Or a good yoga dvd for bikers?

Cheers

So what's the deal about riding/training in the rain?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Well I know this is a tough dirty sport and these bikes were designed to take it all in and last forever.....NOT!

With all the rain lately and probably more coming, what do the sages reckon about riding in the rain?

I know that riding in the rain and the trails is not great for your bike due to the obvious grit wear and tear, especially on the drive train; then of course there are the trails that suffer from riding on them when it's wet....no brainer!

So what about riding in the rain on the asphalt...for a few hours at a time.....what sort of damage can be done?

Why aren't my times improving?

I seem to have got to a stage were my times around local tracks have plateaued and it's starting to frustrate me. I wondered if anyone has any tips to help me.

I'm currently doing 1 or 2 interval sessions around Centennial park, consisting of 2:30 intense, 4:00 minimal, repeated 6 times. I also do at least one 50km road ride and if possible I'll do another 35km ride. On the weekends I'll go and do 20-30km on the dirt.

I don't really have much extra time to spend on the bike so I was hoping to train smarter, not longer.

1 on 1 skills training

Hi guys

I have been riding for about a year and was thinking it might be a good idea to get some one on one coaching on my moutain biking to help build my skills and get rid of any bad habits I have picked up on the way.

Can anyone recommend a good trainer on the northern beaches

Cheers
Adam

Yearly totals

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

So it's that time of year again where we review the years riding and set some new goals for next.
I'll start the ball rolling,
8675km total since March.
350+ hours riding
137000+ mtrs of climbing
1500km of MTb racing. (details from Strava)
Fav track would have to be Welby. Technical enough to keep you on your toes without trying to kill you.
Best event was a tie between choccy foot rounds at Awaba and Rydal
Goals for 2013. Ride my MTb more
Complete a solo 24 hour race.

Heart rates for different types of training

A question for the training guru's out there.

Most of my training I do on the road bike. I do a mix of intervals on a stationary trainer, intervals on the road and bunch rides. The bunch rides here are not the easy miles variety, but a pretty solid effort (grp 3 at SOP for those who train at Homebush).
