Newbie needs help deciding on bike - current options listed

Hi all,

I'm just getting started with trail riding but love it so far. I'd really like to buy my own bike. I'm female, 170cm tall and was wondering what people thought of a few bikes I'm currently interested in. I'm a student - so i'd like a bike under ~1k. Currently considering:

2009 Giant Talon (need to save a little more for this one)

2009 Giant Yukon

2009 GT Chucker 1

Cranks slipping forward

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I went for a ride this morning where I had this horrible kind of slipping when pedaling under load. At first i thought it was the rear derailleur slipping between gears but it was definitely not that. It was kind of as if it was slipping forward as I was pedaling and not "catching" properly, each time I did it it made a very unhealthy clunking sound. It occurs no matter what gear I am in and what cog I am on so I have discounted that. I had someone watch as I pedaled under load and they said that they could not see the chain obviously getting caught anywhere or skipping between gears/cogs.

Rolling resistance

On a ride recently i noticed my bike didn't really wanna roll all that well at speed, when i say speed i say 45-55km/h. My mate on his merida dualy could pretty much come past me rolling 10km/h faster. We were both on 2.1 knoblies with similar setups besides hes being a bit lighter. Could a change of hubs from deore to xt make a difference.

Besides tyres what could make a difference?

Thanks

Recommend a bike

I'm in the market for buying a new hard tail. I would like disc brakes, but apart from that I have a pretty open mind. My budget is around $750-$1000. Can anyone recommend and make a model?

3 x 9 or stuff it all off?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

When i bought my bike the guy before me converted it to a 2 x 9. So i was just wondering how i convert it back to a 3 x 9. He got rid of the small shimano slx chainring from the front cassette. Or is it worth just going to a single chain ring and loose all the excess weight, find an inbetween amount of teeth between the granny and middle (never use the top) I almost died riding today, did 40km without being on a saddle for 2 months i rode from st ives to the bottom of akuna bay and back up, my average pulse was 160-170!!!
