front tyre experiments
I found out first hand at the Mont the difference that tyre selection makes.
First up; while at the pre race brief they were chucking freebies into the crowd, I was tossed a Schwalbe Ralph! It went into the spares box as I already had two new tyres on my bike for the Mont. It was a real top score that turned into a rather fortunate one as well (about 5 hours later) I think someone was trying to tell me something!

Rear derailleur mystery - Help please
Help please.
Last week noticed my rear (LX) derailleur cable hanging way out at right angles and the outer braid was broken. I assumed I had snagged it on something as the cable had been pulled back from the bars and got it replaced. (Which was expensive after the tune et al.)
Knock off Shimano chains?
Anyone ever heard of counterfeit Shimano chains? I bought a CNHG73 from eBay and it looks very questionable: the stampings and riveting are far less perfect than they normally are for Shimano. It measures up OK, and is definitely a new bicycle chain (unfortunately the wrong bloody size: they mailed me an 8 speed...), but the attention to detail suggests a fake. Surely no one would bother?
I'll try and post an image if anyone's interested.
It was bloody cheap, by the way. Still, I think I might stick to T7 in future.
Wheelset / Handlebar and Stem
Hi all,
Well after an unfortunate events on the weekend, and a very lucky outcome to my bike falling of a mates bike rack on the M4. I think being midnight and not much traffic played a part in my bike being relatively in one piece.
(Bike is 2009 stump jumper elite)
The problem, i am in the Mont on Saturday/Sunday and I am in need of some replacement parts for my bike. I was hoping to get these alot cheaper but i am strapped for time so I will be going thru the local bike shop.
Maxxis "exception" series
I am wondering what the deal is with the Maxxis "exception" series compared to the standard "XC". I appreciate that the exception series is recommended for racing and it has something to do with the compounds used in the rubber to make them faster and thus better for racing but am unsure what this actually means to me. Are the "exception" series simply faster but the trade off is a less durable tyre or are they as durable and faster but you pay more for that?
New bike here we go
have just ordered an 2009 Ironhorse bootleg 2.0 in the hope that it will bring my times down well below the times im doing currently on my 2006 Norco six one ( 42 min dam laps ) so that I will be able to enter in some races socially before too long and be somewhat competitive so that the next event doesnt need to wait for me to finish before starting.

RockShox “NEW” Sektor – 150mm trail fork

Sounds pretty good. I reckon it'll be a great fork for a bike like my Heckler or anything in the AM category...
Blackspire revisited
Since posting this last year I now find myself in a similar situation with my Shimano Hone/LX (XT compatible) crankset. The Shimano rings on it have worn more easily than I would've liked. And now, given the km's it's time to renew. LBS reckons the Blackspire middle chainring is much harder wearing than Shim one and will go on with no problem. I didn't discuss the outer chainring, but I'm guessing that this would also be true.
Has anyone had any experience good or bad putting Blackspire chainrings onto Shimano Hone/LX cranks?
Thanks
Phil
Convert Front derailleur cabling from bottom pull to top pull
I'm thinking of converting my front derailleur from bottom pull to top pull. Well not actually converting the derailleur as that already supports both, but converting the cable routing on my bike.
However there are no cable mounting points on the top of the seat tube to secure the cable.
Is there any way of doing this? Any aftermarket clamps available that would clamp to the seat tube?
I see a lot of dirt under my bottom bracket where the existing cable is routed and believe the top pull would keep the cable out of this dirt. Or am I wasting my time doing this?
Suggestions anyone?
