Bottom Bracket question. Old for new ?

I think the bottom bracket on my commuter is dying... it creaks like a mofo everytime I put pressure on it. I tried tightening it, it will go quiet for 200m and then it will creak again. It is more than 10 years old on a 13 year old steel hardtail.

It's an Octalink old school type bottom bracket.
My question is, can I put external bottom bracket on this bike ? I have a spare one that I can use, I also have a spare SLX crank that I can use.

What measurements should I look at ?

giant reign 2 with coil shock

im stuck between a 2012 giant glory 2 and a 2013 giant reign 2. as much as i would love the glory, i probably wouldn't benefit from a full DH rig much. i am looking for a more all mountain rig, but i want to be able to throw it around pretty hard. one thing i have read is that the reign cant handle very big drops, is this true?

and also would a coil shock help that. because i have read that people have done it on 05/06 model reigns (not reign x) and they said that it gave it a more plush feel and helped with the bottoming out problem.

headset and forks

hi there,

when buying a new headset, does the fork crown race normally come with the headset? i am talking about the part that gets pressed onto the bottom of the steerer tube.

Also, are they specific to the headset? or are they all the same?

I have just swapped forks over from 2 different bikes and the forks dont seem to fit properly at the bottom of the head tube (where the crown race fits into the head tube ) . I probably need to also swap over the crown race if they are different. So that the correct crown race is matched with the correct headset (assuming they are different??).

Vinyl wrap frame,

I think I’m gunna do it, has anyone done it/ seen it. I’ll strip all the parts off and get a professional to do it. Looking at my line of bikes and cracked frames after some time they look like crap. Stone chips, scratches etc, and yeah I know it gives them character but doesn’t do a lot for re-sale (not the cracked frames). Just got a new bike, well 2012 model owned by old lady, only ridden to church on Sundays. It looks so shinny, sweet and innocent and I’m about to grab it by the throat and ring its neck.

All rear suspension designs are created equal... discuss

I recently came across this summary of suspension designs which suggests that all rear suspension designs have their pluses and minuses:

Servicing Time ATAC XS pedals

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I spent this morning replacing the bearings and bushes in two sets of Time pedals and thought I'd share for anyone else that maybe running these pedals. Over the years my Time's developed some play so I thought I'd replace the internals myself.

Here is how I did it:
1) Remove the end caps. I improvised using two small screwdrivers but a set of circlip pliers will probably make things easier.
2) Remove the nut on the end of the axle.
3) The axle is quite snug in the bearing. You will need to use a drift or similar to tap out the axle.

Converting 3X10 to 2x10 specific questions

Hey everyone

I'm about to convert from 3 x 10 to 2 x10 with bash ring and have some questions.

Currently have an SLX 24/32/42 crank set and want to go to a 26/38 set up as have check gear ratio charts and this combo should cover all my used ratios.

I can pick up the XT 38T and XT 26T chain rings designed for the 2X 10 cranks.

Glasses

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi,

What do you guys and gals out there use for riding glasses?

I have only tried saftey glasses and general sunglasses, I don't think the are really cutting it.

Is it really worth going to cycle specific glasses and if so what do you recommend?

Thanks

Article on 26er versus 29er race comparison

Just read an interesting article on MTBR where a guy raced a 24 Hour Race on both a 26er and a 29er.
