50 is the new black?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Think I've found my new distance!

This was the first time out on the dirt since the Fat Tyre back in December. This was my first 50km event. I usually go in for the main event but after spending zero time training or spending any time on the bike this year I decided to downgrade my entry to the 50km. My theory was simple 'I could prolly kill a 50 but a 100 would prolly kill me".

Planning to go for a ride tomorrow at Appin but have suspicions that there is racing going on. Does anyone else know ?

All good, nice and dry. A bit loose in sections and a few babyheads to contend with.

The day I beat Jason English. Sort of.

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

My goal this year was to finish in the top 10% in a 50km XCM race, and having placed 33rd (out of 232) in my category at last weekend's Capital Punishment, I was determined to do better at Convict 100. I didn't really know what to expect, but most of my training is done in Lane Cove National Park, so I like steep hills and rocky fire trails. So I lined up at the back of the first wave, shivering cold and waiting for the start. The guy next to me said "make sure you ride in a bunch - you don't want to be alone in a headwind on the final dirt road section".

Appin update for 05 May

Area:
Appin
Status:
Amber/Some Issues

I did a long lap this morning taking in the Lost Track and the complete race loop plus some extra stuff. There were plenty of other people out there too.

The Race Loop is amber. It is rideable provided you ride through the middle of all the wet stuff and rutted sections or it's just going to get wider at those points, of which there aren't too many. The second half of the track is definitely the wetter half. I also opened up the new route coming down from the top of the track that bypasses the section going down the eroded, ledgy section running parallel to Appin Rd. It's soft but will firm up with a bit of riding, just in time for tomorrows race and the Rock Wallaby on the 27th.

The Lost Track is red. There is a fair bit of trail widening going on and a bit of damage from motos, who are mostly riding the middle of the track. Some sections had rotor deep puddles. Yes, we rode through the middle of everything, getting wet feet, and I've since spent a while cleaning the bike!

Manly Dam update for 05 May

Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Green/Open

Still some water about in the usual places - the all weather road sections after Manly Vale School and on the Allambie side - but overall the track is good.

I saw a 2.5 metre diamond python this morning, plus some dude riding an orange unicycle. Never a dull moment Eye-wink

Dee Why Bike Hub honorable mention

I just thought i would highlight the cheap and efficant bike service that I recieved from the owner(Not sure of his name) of teh Dee Why Bike Hub. I went down to the store this morning at 8am unannouced with a new cassette the I purchased online (only because he told me he didnt have one in stock). He then proceeded to change teh cassette while I waited and then on top of all this he only charged me $5.00.

I was most impressed with the service and price.
