Official updates are available on the Hornsby MTB Twitter Feed.

PLEASE NOTE: The trail is closed from dusk to dawn - no night riding is allowed.

Location

Old Man's Valley (OMV) is just west of Hornsby train Station and sits between the Hornsby Pool / TAFE facilities and the closed Hornsby Quarry. Hornsby is a 45 minute drive, a 45 train trip, or a 50 minute cycling commute North-North-West of the Sydney CBD, NSW Australia.

Difficulty

Easy (Green), Intermediate (Aqua), More Difficult(Blue) and Advanced (Black) options available.

Trail Head

Located on Quarry Road, Hornsby, the trail head has a detailed map of the trails, including existing and planned trails. Parking on weekends can be found behind the Hornsby shops located on the western side of the railway. However, during the week they can be pretty full and so the car park located at the end of Quarry Road is the go. For those taking the train, come out of the train station on the western side of the railway and then ride 100 m down Pacific Highway and turn left into Dural St. Ride 150 metres and turn right into Quarry Road where the trails start. PLEASE NOTE: The trail is closed from dusk to dawn - no night riding is allowed - one day soon, hopefully!

Direction

Single Direction only, follow sign arrows.

Current Trail Map

Description

Mostly cross country single track, OMV is a combination of hand cut, machine cut, slick rock, rock armoured and timber board walk. Except for the Green Loop, OMV is relatively challenging with tight rocky sections, short pinch climbs, and includes extensive berms and rollers that help the rider maintain momentum and flow.

The trail starts at the Trail Head at Quarry Road, Hornsby near the Crusher Plant (at the Trail Head Sign) and heads north downhill for approximately two kilometres of amazing flowing berms, rollers and board walk. A one kilometre gradual and scenic climb takes the rider up some fire trail, then turn left to follow the single track that gradually climbs up behind the TAFE and Pool, and then shoots the rider back up to Quarry Road at the fire trail gate. Head right at the Fire trail gate along Quarry Road and turn left again into single track that will take the rider to the highest point on the trail.

OMV has trails that meet IMBA guidelines for Green Circle (easy), Blue Square (Intermediate) and Black Diamond (Advanced). Green circle trails are typically wide, quite flat, and void of obstacles. The Green Circle Loop is located on the large open grass field in the middle of Old Man's valley. 'Blue Square Trails are narrower and include obstacles of intermediate difficulty, opportunity to bypass difficult obstacles is typically provided. The main loop is currently mostly Blue Circle, with two main options to take the Black Diamond sections. Black diamond trails are narrow and contain mainly unavoidable obstacles. ( IMBA - Trail Difficulty Rating System). Please use the new tyre scrubber on Quarry Road to remove mud from tyres - (Plant disease control).
