Just wondering if anyone is looking for a team member for this years Scott 24hr?
Or if there are enough people interested for a preferably 6 person team?
Cheers
Evan
Manly Vale bike path freedom in doubt
And the cycle (pardon the pun) continues...

Riders build unauthorised tracks, land owners notice, track gets shut down or destroyed, riders kick up a stink, track may or may not re-open. As discussed: Unauthorised trail construction can only end badly.
I have to say this is very disappointing. People should know better by now, especially given what went on with The Grove and after the recent announcements from NPWS.
What have i done!!!
Ok...title is a bit of a misleader as i am very happy, actually extremely happy.
On the weekend i found my new bike to replace my much beloved trance and am picking it up when the trails dry out.
Before i get into specifics i wanna say thanks for all the help with sorting me out and giving me ideas on what to look at in previos threads.
Ended up getting a S.J FSR EVO EXPERT (cool name i no) pretty much a normal S.J with some tweaked geometry like a slacker head angle and more travel so more of an all mountain bike.

How light is too light?
Perusing the internerd and came across some mtb hubs that weigh in at 385g's for the set. This is less than my rear hub alone! Would hubs as light as these stand up to the punishment dished out on a mtb?
I'm not a weight weenie so I have no idea about this kind of stuff. I can't help but think that under my 89kg arse there could be some issues.
Jesmond Bushland Cycling Trail Map.
As it has been raining and i haven't had the chance to ride, I have put together a map of Jesmond Bushland with all the trails that I know of.
I mainly ride in the Eastern Side so that is why there aren't very many trails mapped on the Western Side.
The names are what me and my mates call them. Please tell me if you find any trails you want added or if the names of the trails need to be changed.
I have put a little key in the map and need to come up with what direction the trails should be.
Thanks.
Mountain Bikers and Wilderness zones
Poaching the link from rotorbrun
An interesting read about mountain bikers and wilderness.
A bit of back ground Wilderness zones in the USA are currently no go for anything but self powered exploration. For some reason MTb falls outside this and is considered mechanical transport (“propelled by a nonliving power source.) however horse riding is allowed.
In NSW wilderness zones are similarly self powered. MTB is allowed on official maintenance trails and other trails (We're talking fire trail here)with the expressed permission from the Head ranger/
Formula brakes (vs Avid)
I appeciate that everyone is going to have their favourite brakes but I am interested in people's opinions of Formula R1 brakes especially in comparison to Avid X0 or XX. It is for an XC bike that comes stock with Formula R1s but I don't really have any knowledge of them and am wondering what they are like and whether I shoud think about swapping them out. I have used Elixirs on other bikes and although they have their problems I guess I have become used to these brakes.

Ranger Co-Operation
Was just on rotorburn trying to find some updated info on Menai and came across a thread about a maintenance day with the rangers and asking for volunteers. Guys have put some major effort into getting the council and rangers coming around and now they now we wish to help not hinder their trails. It will be great when we get to this point. See below;

This is the viewpoint article in print. Its referring to trail bikes but shows a picture of a mountain bike
What advances do you forsee in MTN Biking?
Last weekend I attended a meeting with NPWS in Glenbrook(unrelated to the disscussion paper or north sydney projects)
Most intesting Question of the day was what advances do you forsee likely to occur with mountain biking in the next 10 years? example. Will riders be using electric motors? Will downhill pedalling store energy to assist with climbing?
Lane Cove track
I rode up in Lane Cove today for the 1st time. I started at Delhi Road and ended up just below the single track to Thornleigh Station. I had a few false exits and did a fair bit of turn around and start again. Is there actually much to the Lane Cove tracks or is it mainly this fire trail that I spent 90% of my time on? Just wondered if there were any LC veterans out there that could show me around should there be anything exciting that I'm missing?

Tips, tricks & advice for first foreign bike trip to Rotoura
How's it going. Myself and a few buddies have decided to take a trip to Rotoura, NZ in November for a wk. Looking forward to it as it is Rotoura but its also my first trip biking that can't be got to in a car. As the excitement builds was just hoping to get some feed back off nobmober's who have been there or who have any advice for foreign trips.
Were booked up with Air NZ, they're charging an extra $20 for the bike's as sporting goods when they are getting checked in.
We've a HiAce booked for when we arrive and it'll be our mode of transport for the wk.
Garigal National Park is about to get an official mountain bike track!
For those that don't know, there was a meeting near Bantry Bay this morning between the Environment Minister, Treasurer, NSW NPWS Director and other such folk... oh - and a couple of local MTB riders
An announcement coming from the press (I'm yet to see the official NPWS press release, but trust the Daily on this one) is that, "Garigal National Park is about to get an official mountain bike track."
Massive thanks to all of you who believed and supported this for so long. No doubt there will be more news on this and other developments coming, so keep an eye out.
The Manly Daily story is here:

Update: There was a second story in the Daily that quote's Mike Baird as saying and announcement was expected in the “next few weeks.". Excellent news!
