Rear derailleur upgrade - suggestions pls
Hi, I recently bought a 2011 Trance X3. Absolutely brilliant thing, particularly compared to the 1994 Merida with Mag 10s which was my old trusty (finally worn out).
But, the rear derailleur is a Shimano SLX - seems really slow and clunky compared to the old (1994) XTR.
Admittedly, its a much bigger number of teeth on the rear cluster with this one (not sure, but 36 versus 32?).
So, question is, can I upgrade to something better - faster changing and with less clanging and grinking? Without spending all my savings (ie. is there a value proposition here)?
Advice much appreciated.

Removal of handle bar end plugs
I unscrewed the centre screw loosened my lock on grips as I want to swop my break leaver and gear changer over but can't budge the plastic plug on the end. Is it screwed into the bar or just bashed into it? Well got it removed. Partly removed screw then tapped it in. Then prized off the plug. Thanks to a very good Mtb friend. I owe you a beverage Sat.
Super D / Gravity XC - Canberra
Back in early July, I took part in a gravity XC race over at Stromlo. Needless to say, it was great fun.
Looks like CORC are trying to get another one happening:

(NB - still TBC).
Pending last minute disasters, I'll be heading down on the Saturday.
Anyone else?

Removing de-threaded cleat screw
So I stupidly dethreaded one of the screws of the cleat with my allen key when trying to unscrew it. I've tried many different allen keys and all of them turn without turning the screw.
Tried to drill a hole thru with different bit sizes, different speeds, even tried hammer mode - seems impossible to drill those screws which are tough to drill in!
Any tips on how to remove the screw please ? Maybe I should try a more powerful drill but then there's the danger of damaging the plates on the shoes

Kids on bikes? Seat or Trailer?
I'm about to introduce my Wife & 16 month old daughter to the joys of riding. I tease my wife that our daughter will be a future downhill world champion
No trails as yet... just riding on local paths like Narabeen lakes.
Has anyone else got their family, including young kids, into riding? If so I'm interesting in bike seat vs. bike trailer.
I can see some pro's an con's for both. What have others found or am I a NobMob pioneer?
Bike seat - pros...
More invovled in the experience
Can be permanently attached to the wifes bike
Cheaper tha trailer
Bike Seat - cons
Next XC race in Kiwarrak?

Which cassette?
Have a Yeti 575
Rear cassette has just given out with teeth shearing off etc etc. This is my first cassette replacement.
What matters when purchasing a new one? where's the best place to source?
Things I think I know already
Good to replace both cassette and chain at same time
doesn't matter if I have SRAM derailleur/shimano cassette
high-end stuff may wear quicker
glendale-wallsend
Not sure if this area has been talked about on here before as i have only been a member for a month or so, but the area between glendale, edgeworth and wallsend has a boatload of potential for some really good trails. there is already a few good singletrails in there, heaps of firetrail to link it all up, and plenty of room for new builds, not sure who owns the land but seeing as though there is a cycleway through there now, i thought it would be ideal.
Thanks to all those that helped a fallen comrade at the Oaks today
Just a shout out to all those that helped out our mate, Tristan today at the Oaks.
Rob S and a few others helped out with first aid and equipment after Tristan fishtailed out and faceplanted into the rut at the sharp left juncture about 3 clicks from the Woodford entry.
He was out cold, copped a broken cheekbone and concussed and was airlifted out.
Again just a huge show of thanks for the mtb comraderie and Tristan is doing well and sends his thanks for those that helped!
Manly Dam nobs
Ok, so I am doing a hot-lap of Manly Dam yesterday (I'm not quick but just looking to get under 40mins) and I come across 2 guys riding slowly talking who kindly invited me to pass them. However when I did they decided to race me down the back end of the Dam, both overtaking me before slowing down again when they got in front...nobs. One wearing boots riding with his heals on the pedals...sad I know that even in that get up he got in front of me.
Linking Terrey Hills to Oxford Falls
Hi folks,
Does anyone know if there is a way to link Terrey Hills and Oxford Falls without too much road work? I've heard there is a way via Morgan Road but can't find any details anywhere on this. I've ridden Cascades to Manly Dam and back through Davidson (following the pipeline) and that was a good morning out, trying to find a similar longish ride....
TIA

Trail between Powder Works and Terrey Hills?
Hi guys,
Is there a trail between the top of Powder Works Rd (where it meets Mona Vale Rd) and Terrey Hills? My wife wants to ride from home (Collaroy) to work (Terrey Hills), but I don't feel comfortable having her ride along Mona Vale Rd. Especially because for a part of it there isn't any shoulder at all! I know I wouldn't want to ride it, especially early mornings.
Thanks!
Ummm another bike
Well did a dude day today helped Kingy with the trailer mods.Did swing past Blackmans to see if the drop posts are in yet and damn I walked out with a 2012 Giant Reign 1 so done a few set up things ready for a quick run tomorrow at winmalee.

Any trail updates for the northern beaches?
Keen to get out on a long ride tomorrow so has anyone been out today and able to post a trail status update? Particularly keen to know state of Manly Dam, Cascades and Terrey Hills.
Freedom Dirt Jumps: Urgent Action Needed
Despite Fiday's Manly Daily article indicating that consultation with the Freedom Dirt Jump riders was underway, it appears the bureaucrats may be planning a pre-emptive strike.
Perimeter fencing, star pickets and orange construction mesh have gone up during the day on Friday, and it is thought that demolition is imminent.
While some may disparage the Freedom riders for unauthorised trail construction, the thing we need to bear in mind is this: they have already tried working with Manly Council, and it didn't work.
Fox FIT cartridge marks
I pulled apart my Fox 36 TALAS RC2 forks tonight to replace the semi bath oil in the lowers.
I found the below markings on the black section of the FIT cartridge. Is this wear or is this just nothing? I'm assuming it is not wear as the diameter of the black section is a lot smaller than on the silver FIT cartridge so shouldn't rub on anything.
Any ideas? Any need to be concerned? Thanks
Bash guard advice
Got a decent hit on my calf from the chain ring last weekend and thinknig about getting a bash guard to prevent it happening again.. Can anyone help me with some decent advice on what to go for (that will fit the bike) and where to get it?
Bike: Stock 2011 Giant Anthem x1
Thanks for the help
sbs's coverage of the world champs
Hope every one caught the highlights on sbs 2 last night.
Great coverage across all disciplines, though they didn't show Troys winning run in the U19s.
Commentator seemed a little lost for what was actually happening or who the riders were at times but otherwise a great show.
The XC course looked tough, none of this flat, groomed, every corner bermed crap. Massive climbs and insanely technical descents.
The 4x track looked like a mountain bike track not just a bmx track on a hill, therefore the races weren't decided by who had the best gate start.
Brake upgrade
I have Juicy 3 brakes on my hard tail and while they're not bad, I can't help but think some better pads and disks wouldn't go amiss.
What does everyone recommend?
Knorrit Flat riding
Hi guys and girls,
does anyone know of any mountain bike tracks in or around Knorrit Flat, I am heading up there in a couple of weeks and would like to take the bike up if there is something to ride.
Cheers
