EOI: Fling Training - This Sunday - Wingello

Wondering if people would be keen to do some Fling Training down at Wingello on Sunday.

I have plans to do 3 laps around Wingello of the Red Loop to get some decent training in, pace will be quickish as it is a training ride. Don't want to come across as a dick, but yeah I am heading down for some solid training before the Fling and the pace will reflect this to a certain extent.

8.30am start I am thinking...anyone keen?

Hi All,

Andy and I are looking for a third man for the upcoming SRAM mind series enduro at Lidsdale.

We're not taking it too seriously, hopefully finish within top ten but doesn't matter if we don't. Main aim for the day is to have fun, have a laugh and join other like minded people enjoying some good singletrack.

More details on the race can be found here:- http://www.chocolatefoot.com.au/singletrack-mind...

Another one of my novice questions. Can I run a UST tyre on a standard mountain bike rim without changing anything on the rim/wheel?

Logging into the MTBA website.

Does anyone else have problems logging into the MTBA website? I seem to have half a dozen membership numbers and even when I try to log in with a new password that they have emailed me it still comes up with an error message. It seems to be a real mess.

I was trying to join a club online but it seems you have to go through the horrible MTBA site to do so. When I signed up for the 12 Hour event there were similar issues.

Opinions or fixes anyone?

Continental RaceKings size

Hi guys,
Just about to get some race kings and having a bit of trouble finding the correct size.
Some reviews say that the 26x2.0 is really skinny, others say it's huge. Then again the 2.2 is meant to be enormous ???
Oh yes, and apparently they get wider after a couple rides too.

Looking for something the same size as a rocket Ron 2.1 or racing Ralph 2.1
Does anyone know which king would be closer (2.0 or 2.2)
Thanks

Garmin edge 500

I recently bought one of these from a local sports shop. It came with the HRT monitor and includes a speed and cadence sensor, which I thought will be useful for training purposes.Everything is setup and works, is attached and I have used it quite a few times. The download feature is awesome post a ride. The thing that I cannot get working is the cadence syncing...I have tried quite a few times...seems simple enough? Can anyone help with this aspect of the setup? I'm willing to come to you if you're on the N beaches somewhere?
Let me know...
Thanks
Steve

Peak or no peak?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Due to a little altercation with a tree down in Jarrahdale at the weekend, I'm now in the market for a new helmet.

So, what's the current thinking on that little peak/visor thingy on the MTB helmets - unnecessary fashion statement or essential accessory?

I wouldn't want to make a faux pas by turning up unsuitably attired at the Cape-to-Cape later this month....

Removing / replacing chain

So recently I had to change my front derailleur and removed my chain. I have a compact tool kit... Like a stanly knife for the bike... And it has a chain remover.

So removing the chain was fine and I even ended up using the compact toolkit to remove and fit the front new derailleur. When it cam to fitting the chain... NIGHTMARE!

Lining up the pin, getting it seated the using the chain tool to get the pin in took me hours.

It got me thinking if I was on a trail how would I remove a stuffed link and reconnect my chain. What am I missing? It can't be this hard.

Anywhere dry this weekend?

Does anyone know where will be dry enough for a ride this weekend?

Central coast would be out, Manly out. Yellomundie has had rain but usually drains pretty well. Wingello has had the least rain but the most likely to get rain over the weekend. Mt Annan?

Does anyone now what Yellomundie is like at the moment? or have any other suggestions? I will post a ride if there are any suggestions.

Camelbaks

Once again I am posing very amateur questions. This weekend I am riding in the Scott 24hr. I am thinking of carrying a camelbak due to when i drink from a bottle I tend to slow down. Does anyone ride without taking any water?

Sliping single speed

I decided to go the way of the single speed only to be met with more challenges than I first anticipated. It's a single speed how hard can it be to get a chain to go around a couple of sprockets? Really?

The first attempt, I bought a single speed conversion kit complete with a 16 tooth sproket, an unsprung tensioner and some spacers. As a result I ended up running a nine speed chain, 16 tooth sprocket and a very worn 32 tooth 9speed chain ring. The first attempt worked untill I started riding off road. The result was a chain that kept falling off.

Avid elixir cr Mag matchmaker compatibility

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Looking at purchasing some avid elixir cr Mag brakes from a friend who has no use for them.

I currently run avid juicy 7 with match maker brackets and SRAM x0 9 speed.

Research I have done tonight indicates that the avid elixir cr brakes have a new U-Clamp which is MatchMaker X (MMX) compatible.

my question is can these brakes be mounted on my existing matchmaker brackets with SRAM x0 9 speed shifters ?

Do I have to buy new matchmaker x brackets and if so will these be compatible with my SRAM xo 9 speed shifters ?

Wheels - Technical Info

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Forgive me for my naivety but I need some quite basic technical help on wheels. I need to replace my 26" MTB wheels but I'm confused as to what all the jargon means. I ride a Specialized Epic Expert '09. The hard terrain of Manly Dam has destroyed the DT Swiss XL420SL rims beyound truing. The hubs are still in great condition. These wheels are super light but just can't handle the rocky terrain I frequently ride. Any tips on strong all mountain wheels greatly appreciated too.

The jargon:

What does "Centre-Lock" mean? How do I know these will fit?

What have I done?

Today I went out for a ride and being the curious person i was. Deciding to twist these knobs on my gear changer. These I later realised were for my cable tension and the bike doesn't seem to change as smoothly as before(note:I twisted them heaps). Can anyone help me out or should i go into my local bike store and get them to help me out?

NBN New Story on Glenrock

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

News story on the Glenrock Trails... a real success story for all.

http://www.nbntv.com.au/index.php/2011/09/14/mou...

The area is a great example of the difference between a really nicely built trail vs randomly formed adopted trails. The riding quality and the condition of the trail is amazingly different. When they are finished its going to be a really great area.

NPWS MTB Policy and Trails for the Northern Beaches

Get on your bike in NSW National Parks!

In case you missed it over the weekend there was some great news coming out of NSW NPWS.

Firstly, the release of their long awaited Sustainable MTB Policy (discussion in NSW NPWS Sustainable Mountain Biking Strategy) which should benefit riders state-wide.

Then there was news of the equally long awaited Northern Sydney MTB Pilot Program (discussion in Get on your bike in NSW National Parks!). This included maps of proposed trails in Bantry Bay, Berowra Valley and Oxford Falls . There are information days on the first two of these where the public can learn more and show their support (see link for dates). If you care about this initiative and getting some authorised trails it would probably pay to show up and thank the authorities.

Coverage in the press:

Not time to celebrate yet, but it's certainly looking promising! Smiling
