Upgrades
What has been the best upgrade you have done to your bike?
[Mod. moved to MTB Gear]
Wheel building.
Can anyone out there instruct me in the art of wheelbuilding please? Preferably local in the Blue Mtns.
New Skills Park and Tech Loop for Stromlo!
http://the-riotact.com/two-new-mountain-bike-fes...
Today I joined program partners Capital Hotel Group, TREK, Onya Bike, cre8ive, Makin Trax and Canberra Off-Road Cyclists and Mountain bikers Ben Henderson and Ben Cory to officially open a new 2 kilometre test track known as The Playground.
creaking
Did a bit of a road ride on my mtb today and really noticed some creaking on the crank side when pedaling. does anyone know what it is and can it be easily rectified?
Green Point
Does anyone have any information about the trails at Green Point? My wife has ridden there a few times with a local women ride group and she took me out there to show me the trails on Sunday. I did not expect much to be honest but I was pleasantly surprised and there were some fantastic short technical climbs that had me blowing pretty hard. Firstly, I was wondering if these trails are legal to ride and secondly, if they are, does anyone have a map? With a bit of knowledge I reckon that one could make a pretty handy ride loop.
Technical Question: Removing a rear cassette lockring
Hi everyone, my order from crc came after lots of emails and about 3 weeks of waiting. Within the contents was my new toolkit which i got to start doing general maintenance.
Im trying to remove my rear cassette lockring with all the correct tools and the lockring will move bout 3˚ with not an overwhelming amount of resistance but then just stop. I cant get it to move any further then 3˚.
Any ideas??
Btw i've removed the skewer, inserted the lockring tool with the guide on it, then holding it with the chain whip and loosening anti-clockwise.
Thanks!

Dragging pads
I just put some new break pads and fluid in my Hayes 9 (front brakes) on thursday last week. I rode about 100km on the weekend and midway through my race (BYBF) i noticed that they were starting to constantly drag. Nothing major but i know that they're not meant to rub at all with the disc.
The disc isn't warped, the front caliper is in seemingly good condition and i just gave my bike a thorough cleaning but the rubbing sound is still persisting.
Any suggestions?

Ourimbah / ccomtb
Hi all. I was up at Ourmbah yesterday with mrs, trying out some bikes etc.
We haven been up there for nearly a year.
How good is it? The new woodern berm-wall and some of the mini gap-jumps?
I wanted to write something to openly commend the guys at CCOMTB (and any other involved trail faries) for doing such great work on the track and looking after it so responsibly.
Obviously there are bits that get damaged by the rain, and other bits that are being worked on, but there are great work arounds and such a maze of options available now.
Are there any decent fire trail networks around Newy?
ok, there are times when I need a break from the roady but keen to clock up similar sort of riding on the mtb.
So I am hoping someone could suggest somewhere reasonably local (ie 0.5hr drive) that has a good network of fire trails where I could cobble together 50-100k's without going round and round in circles.
Google Earth suggests a few areas of potential - seems to be a big forest area up near Karuah, south of Caves Beach, Sugarloaf down to Lake Mac.
Any suggestions?
Oxford falls / Red hill
Hey everyone. Never ridden red hill but have done a bit of oxford falls and loved it. Maybe looking at next weekend to do either but need some guidance from a local.
Looking at hopefully doing some technical single track, that sorta stuff. Not really into the massive jumps.
Thanks everyone.

1080p goodness with some amazing riding. Some cool super slow motion video too. And one very bone jarring landing!
Lost
Hi all, one of my riding buddies lost his Cateye cycle computer yesterday at the Dam. It may have come off at the fast rocky decent behind Allambie. It is quite small, but if someone does happen to find it along their travels im sure he would be eternally grateful. Let me know if you have found it and want to swap it for a beer....
Cheers
Seized on RP23 Valve Cap
Anyone got any recommendation of how to remove the cap, mine seems to be seized on, which is a tad annoying.
I have tried a pair of plyers to remove it as well.
Help: Replace Giant X2 Front Derailleur
Looking to do my first bit of bike part replacement after breaking the front derailleur on my 2010 Giant Trance X2. The bike is all original parts.
I've checked the bike and Giant website and think that I need the item below (on wiggle).
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/bikes/model/...

Is this the right part?
Any help would be appreciated.

Stolen Jekyll
Brendan L had his Cannondale Jekyll 1000 stolen out of his shed while he was away.
If anyone spots it feel free to kick the guy in the nutts and let us know.
The bike is a Large, mat black in colour and has a head shock instead of the lefty.
My new-ish Jones non-suspended 29er
A few years ago I met a guy on the Oaks who was riding a Pugsly. I asked, "why that bike". He shrugged & replied, "why does anyone choose any bike". That left me flat, thinking there must be something more in his choice. So, here's my effort to explain my odd choice: I've been eying (read "lusting after") Jeff Jones' bike for years — http://jonesbikes.com/ . Jones designs mountain bikes with a focus on making "non-suspended" and great riding bikes. As a designer, what first attracted me to these machines was the years of careful, consistent and steadily developing design at work.
Should I upsize my Brake Rotors
I way around 125Kg and when I went for a ride at Mt York travelling downhill on Cox's trail, I had alot of trouble getting the bike to stop rolling.
I own a 2011 Trance X which came with Shimano Deore XT hydraulic w/7” front & 6” rear rotors.
Im thinking besides loosing wieght I need to upsize my rotors. Although I've been a regular weekend warrior for over 2 years now. Im still a newb when it comes to parts. Whats Brands, designs, costs, etc... should I be looking at?
Wallaroo NP Advocacy Thread
Don't know how many people here ride the Wallaroo NP north of raymond terrace, those from Raymond Terrace and Medowie probably do.
Anyway, NPWS are interested in discussing the potential for the park as a mtb destination. The park has 2500Ha on offer and currently has an extensive network of management, 4wd and moto trails.
I've had preliminary contact with NPWS and we are meeting tomorrow to talk further about it. A group of riders from Medowie and Raymond Terrace has also been kept in the loop so far with a view to forming a group similar to the GTA, for the Wallaroo NP.
Jesmond Advocacy Thread
I thought Jesmond needed its own thread to discuss where its headed.
I've been talking with Council on and off for a few years now about legitimising the trails in the reserve. The Council has always been aware of them and unofficially let them be (other than some jumps below rankin park).
More recently though, Council has become interested in the potential for Jesmond to host mtb events. This obviously has put some focus on formalising and recognising the trails in the park officially.
