I have just come down with the flu so am pulling out of the race. I have a 100km ticket (can possibly downgrade to the 50km) and have paid for accommodation with the NOBMOB crew ($40). I had orgainised to get a lift down with Rob (sharing costs) so this option MAY be available too.

Fork Boots

A friend of mine keeps going on and on and on and on, etc; about how I should install fork boots to protect my forks from accelerated wear and tear because of dirt getting into the fork seals. He reckons it's now not fashionable to use them but very sensible to get the maximum life out of your forks.

Any opinions on using these and can you still buy them?

Beijing Closing Ceremony - One Wheeled Sit In Bikes?

Anyone see them? How'd they work? They'd be great for mountain biking, roll up and over anything - I think, have I got the physics right?

Andos (de)grading!!!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I’d finally got some courage and since I needed some more training before the Angry Doctor I did the Oaks + Andos (all the way up) this Saturday and to my surprise Andos is being graded pretty much like Oaks was.
I don’t know if it’s because of the soil difference or if the work is much worse this time, but the first 10 Ks (near Woodford) are terrible to ride as the surface is extremely soft and loose and even going downhill towards the creeks crossing was tough (It was so soft that I had to actually pedal downhill in order to get some speed).

Sore knee ligament...

Yesterday after 66kms of mostly uphill riding my left knee lateral ligament (I think) was showing lots of pain and I had to catch the train instead of going back down the Oaks Sad
It's the first time I've experienced knee pain - is this particular one a common knee injury for riders? How should it be treated? Ice or heat?
Would it be wise to cary with you some bandage in case it happens again on a 100Km ride?

Thanks,
Tom

Pedals/shoes

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hey
I'm looking at buying a pair of cliplees pedals/shoes, i ride primarily xc stuff, but i can get pretty aggressive, however i'm not a big fan of drops (can't afford to break my arm before the HSC)
My Main reason for wanting to clip in is i'm sick of my foot slipping off the bar and banging my knee on the handlebars, and not being able to climb up hills.

What should i expect to pay for a set up thats going to handle being beaten on a regular basis?

This is interesting:

http://www.singletracks.com/blog/?p=1079

Seems the Singletracks site (a mainly US based site - but that also has trail info in some places here) has received several 'take down' requests lately. Ie. authorities contacting them asking them to remove trail info from their site. They write:

In case you’re curious our policy has always been to update trail descriptions rather than remove them from the website entirely. This is so everyone knows the deal, including mountain bikers who had previously ridden trails that are now closed.

Found on the trail today: bicycle multi-tool.

I'd like to return it to its rightful owner. If this is yours, you will need to accurately describe the unit to claim, and advise when and where you think you might have lost it. PM me or pull my mobile number from my contact details listed on this site (you'll need to be a member to do this).

Crazy 1930/40s bike inventions

Look at that tandem where one rider is cycling normally and the other is in a 'bent position sitting right over the bars (about 14 seconds in, and you see them riding later).

In the second segment, the crazy old dude is saying to the chick, "It's like this, dear all you have to do is make sure the pedals are flat then step onto this 50" wheel like so...".

I like the crazy race where some sprinter is towed in a trailer by tandem riders and has to leap out at checkpoints along the way and get a stamp or something.

Down Hill at Menai (Lucas Hights)

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I have been riding with some of you a couple of times at Menai and did a few laps after that with some mate doing a loop around 20KM. Today we found a very well maintained downhill tack with 3 different runs.
I just had my XC gear so did the easiest run a couple of time and loved it. It had some big burms the whole way down with some nice drops and a couple of small gap jumps that I hit. Only down fall is there is no shuttles, but there is a walking track back up.
If you are more HardCore there are some very challenging bits.

Crank Bros Pedals

Hi - has anybody used the Crank Brothers Candy C pedals? I have been riding clipped in for years but have always used the standard shimano's. These look good but are they practical? They also look easier to clean!

Aaarrrrrrrgh

Jared Graves after looking real good for a medal in the final got clipped on a berm and went OTB.
He was in with a real chance. Fourth at the time. Even managed to poke his nose ahead for a moment on the first berm. I almost hit the TV.

Scenic road for a roadie photoshoot?

G'day guys,
I'm planning on doin g a photoshoot with a roadie. I want to take a shot of them riding on a scenic road somewhere on the northern beaches. Obviously, if we were to go closer to the city we could shoot on some fabulous roads near Bare Island, but I would prefer to do this locally.

Something quiet with the view of the ocean, which actually looks like a country road (as opposed to a residential street) would be superb.

Do you guys have any ideas for a suitable location on the Northern Beaches?

Cheers

Anyone got any old shimano cranks?

I am looking for a pair of used Shimano cranks XT XTR 175mm length (off a medium or large framed bike) for free or borrow.
The small frame bikes I ride come with 170mm cranks so I want to try the 175mm to see if the almost 3% gain in mechanical advantage does anything noticable on rides, think LONG rides.
I know it will reduce ground clearance but thats not really a problem and it wont matter for the experiment.

Many thanks

Craig

Leaky UST tyres

I have an issue with my UST Crossmark tyre.

Few weeks ago I found that they had a few tiny holes in it. I could see the bubbles of air through the water after I washed my bike. So I ordered some Stan's solution as I thought that should seal these little holes up.

However they tyre still seems to be leaking?! I just wet the tyre again and I can still hear and see the little bubbles of air through the water. Sad

What gives? I followed all the instructions on the Stan's bottle.....shake upside down, one scoop etc.

Any ideas why my tyre is still losing air?
