FSR n+1 [Specialized HotRock]
Welcoming another Spesh FSR in the family...
I was looking for a suitable bike upgrade for my 10 year old son - to move from his heavy steel bike so he can join his older brother Benji (12) and me on the trails...
So I couldn't resist as his 10th birthday came up...

New Member
Hi everyone my name is Dave and I'm the newest member of NobMob.
I haven't ridden a MTB since I was a kid but this year I decided to get back into it and so far I'm loving it.
I have spent the first half of this year riding a basic XC bike, a Merida sub 60-D. Since then I have been learning all about the parts of a bike and now I am currently riding a 2003 Giant AC-1 which I am slowly upgrading.
Jenson USA group order - closing TODAY
Hey everyone,
Get in quick - I am placing a JensonUSA order by the end of TODAY (1st August). Total order so far (5 Nobmobbers) reached $700. The total order must be kept under ~$900 to avoid GST etc.
Shipping charges are based on the size, weight, and value of the items you select. Typically around 15-20 % of the total - we'll share this proportionally. (unless you order something really big / heavy and it increases the postage dramatically)
Northern Sydney Ride August 2 or 3?
Hey all. If there is anyone else that wants to ride closer to home this weekend i am planning to go somewhere around northern Sydney - Cascades, Manly Dam, Ingleside, Dural or Ourimbah maybe. I ride an middle tier hardtail but at a decent pace and for a couple hours at least. Post back if you're interested or get my mobile phone no. from my profile. Have a good weekend. Dejavu? Yes, i did post the same proposition last weekend (no takers)!
brakes
Alex, Saint brakes are already good and the new model will be excellent. Hope isn't for everyone and probably suit bike tech geeks better. They are reliable but do require careful set up and attention. I'd steer clear of Hayes even though the higher end models are good. Remember that your HFX Mags are an entry level and OEM product, not top shelf and the design is rather old.
How's the dam looking ?
Anyone been to the dam recently ?
Was originally going to try it tomorrrow morning but recent rain has me thinking it might not be a good idea.
Any reports on condition or advisability ?

Ministerial Taskforce on Tourism and National Parks in NSW
I just emailed this to the taskforce (see Tourism and NSW national parks) and will send hardcopy tomorrow. As they've moved the date there's plenty more time for writing and hope this will encourage others.

Taskforce on Tourism and National Parks

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in response to your invitation for submissions on the Ministerial Taskforce on Tourism and National Parks in NSW.
Some time ago I was a tourist visiting Sydney and was introduced to a number of National Parks at that time. I now live in Sydney and make much use of urban National Parks in the area, and given the impression left from early visits make it a priority to take any out of town or overseas visitor to any parks I can. In addition to this when planning short breaks I will often include a visit to National Parks further afield, once again becoming a tourist visitor to these places.
From experience described above there are a few points that I believe should help visitation as part of your plan. These points are summarised first, then explained more fully after, I hope this aids your reporting processes.
So, to summarise:
- Better general promotion both on-line and in popular tourist spots.
- Examples of activities/suggested itineraries to draw visitors into parks.
- No visitor centres in remote locations – only the bare essentials, probably staff free.
- Public transport infrastructure to urban National Parks.
- No motorised activities.
- Equality of walking and cycling access on all trails.
- Update the cycling policy and make it more consistent across all parks.
- Better planning of tracks & trails.
- Return single track alongside existing one way firetrails.
Soul-Kozak - Ultralight MTB bits - Interested in sharing an order?
These bits are the business when it comes to lightweight.
http://www.shop.soul-kozak.co.uk/
I'm after a set of bar ends, and have negotiated a 10% discount for an order.
Anyone else interested in something to share the freight?
It's not a huge amount (about $20), but significant for a single item.
I'd really like to get a pair of skewers too, but can't justify the cost at the moment.

Snow riding practice in Sydney!
From sunny blue sky to snow & hail in 30 mins!
So we got back from a great sunny ride in Terrey Hills...(joined by Graham, Harry, Chris and the young guns Benji, Xavier and Nick)....
Weather was nice and sunny for most of the ride...with just a bit of light sprinkle on the way back to the car...but there were ominous clouds hanging over the eastern horizon....
To our shock we encountered what looked like snow on the way home on Forest Way...
And on arriving home, the street scenes were more like Whistler, not the leafy North Shore:
*postponed* Ride Week '08, aka "The Professors Mystical Mud Adventure" - 11 to 15 Aug
*broken scaphoid = no ride week*
(big frowny face)
So I had a clipped-in stack yesterday, confirmed broken wrist today...AAARGH
Not sure how long I'll be off the bike, but it'll be a few weeks minimum...at least my boss is letting me postpone my leave!
I'll leave the 3 rides I'd arranged in the calendar, in case people who signed up still wat to go. - keep your eyes open for ride week pt2, sept/oct...

Sunglasses with prescription lenses
I Have decided to invest in some dedicated eyewear for cycling.
Would ideally like swappable lenses for night / day riding (protection vs shrubbery etc at night)
I'm a glasses person, NOT a contact lens person, and not suitable for laser surgery.
This means, I think, that I am limited to sunnies with Rx inserts behind the main lenses.
Any advice / recommendations?
Old computer parts for free
If any of you want
-a fire wirewire card
- 100mb/s network card
- video capture card
- a couple of nb3-l batteries for certain canon cameras
- a charger for the above batteries
just post in the threat and I'll give them to you when I see you on a ride.
What would be a good bike for me?
What's a good bike for me?
Hey guys.
I've just started to get into riding a bit more, and I wanted to get a new bike. I'm looking for a mountain bike that will be used mainly on-road but will do a nice job as a trek bike.
I ride around fairlight/manly mostly (although I've only just started doing it regularly), so I want something that will feel good to ride during medium to long trips anywhere around the northern beaches.
I'm just on the border of 5"9 and 6 foot, and there should be some room to grow (I turned 16 last month).
Stupid Technical Question
Just wondering if anyone has installed Hollowtech XT Cranks and whether you need the special tool to tighten the cap on the non-drive side crank? Cheers, Mick

Site down... WTF!?
Sorry for the extended outage just now folks.
Had to reboot the server (front intake fan needed replacing) and for some reason when it came back none of the Kernel modules would load. Lots of errors as the silly thing thinks I changed the cpu!
version magic '2.6.23.13-homebrew.fc4 mod_unload 686 4KSTACKS ' should be '2.6.23.13-homebrew.fc4 mod_unload K8 4KSTACKS '
Great, huh? So it's in a 'barely alive' state right now after I shoved just enough modules in ('-f' is your friend) to get the network going and the site up.
Just for fun one of the RAID arrays decided it needed a rebuild too, although that could be down to me having to pull the plug a couple times.
Hmmmm... think a kernel rebuild is in order, might as well upgrade while we're at it.
Such is the life of your sysop!
