Tie and solder advice

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Currenyly running Bontrager RL 29er wheelset. Sick of the spokes creaking on the cassette side. I've tried oil and vaseline, which work for a while, until the rain soaked trails wash it away. Is it advisable to tie and solder the spokes, or am I eliminating the flex from the wheel, making it too rigid, leading to damaged spokes etc etc. If tying and soldering is recommended, is it okay to do just one side, in my case the cassette side, the problem side, as on the non drive side there is a gap of approx. 2-3mm between the spokes.
Thanks.

Ex Downhiller looking for a new bike

Hi Team..

I've been been a downhiller for most of my cycling years and have recently given it up for lack of value.. (tired of 2 minute runs and then 20 minutes pushing) Eye-wink Sooo.... I would like to buy a mid range travel bike that I can pedal some distance but still be able to bomb it down some single trail and a few jumps... I have a 2012 XTC with slicks that I commute on and rarely take to the trails (kalamunda etc) but am looking for something more fun with more travel. Anyway, with all this in mind I have my eye on this years new Giant Trance Advanced 1.

hey guys, ive just had a decent altication with one of those moving trees, really hate it when they just appear infront of me haha.

ok down to business
after buckling the front rim pretty badly on the trance, and an ok pay check from work, im in the market for a new set of rims
my budget is at a max of 450 with no movement really so im looking for the most reliable option i can, remembering they may cop some abuse.

Bike weight.

What does your bike weigh?
What bike is it and do you have any fancy schmancy parts on it? Mention if it's 26er or 29er.

Trying to get some idea of what is "normal".

Converting from Avid to Shimano brakes

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I need to pick your brains. Smiling

I'm thinking about switching the Elixir 9s to XT brakes on the new sled and I'm wondering whether I need to change the adapters as well, or will the Shimanos go straight on? IS-to-post mount on the fork (Lefty) and post mount on the rear. The Avids presently have that bunch of shaped washers to provide 3D alignment options and getting the caliper height aligned properly on the brake track is my concern.

here we go wheel size debate

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/technology/t...

Giant bicycles have an analysis on their web site touting the benefits of the 650b wheel size over the 26" or 29" siblings.

It makes the argument that the 27.5" wheel size is the holy grail. As a prospective new bike buyer I'd like comments from some one who has owned all or some of the different wheel sizes. I ride locally so it's a mixed bag as you know.

Anyone had any reviews on one of these?

It's a cheaper version of the Topeak one but it still looks ok and is a third of the price.
Just wondered if anyone had already purchased one?

XTR (M975) kit on 2013 Giant Trance 29er 2 - rear Brake caliper not fitting?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi all,

I recently bought a Giant Trance 29er (2) and a s/h XTR grouppo.

There were a few changes to be made (screw type bb vs press fit, etc).

But where I'm getting stuck big time is that the rear XTR (IS) caliper - even with an adapter - isn't getting anywhere near grabbing the disk?

The caliper needs to get closer to the frame, but all the adapters put the caliper further away?

Do I just need to buy a bigger rotor? Thanks Smiling
