Bike build project - where to start?

I want to embark on my first bike build project.
Having never actually done this, I'm not sure where to start.

I suppose a frame is a good start, but where to from there?

I want a medium travel (~140mm) dually.
I am pretty short (5’6”) and usually ride a small frame.

Any advice is appreciated.

Where to find 10mm thru bolt?

I have managed to strip the thread on the QR end of my current 10 x 135mm thru bolt axle.

A search of the www has uncovered not very many replacements. I don't want to spend $70 on the DT Swiss one.

Can I just buy a 10mm bolt from bunnings?
I don't specifically need a QR, hex bolt is fine with me.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Press Fit Bottom Brackets

I am looking at a new frame to build up and the one I like has press fit bottom brackets. Anyone had any experience with these? What is the benefits? can you still fit your normal cranks?
Thanks

Brake upgrade???

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Looking to upgrade brakes on my enduro, not happy with the avids, the levers have started playing up and out of warranty. Price is not really an issue what's every one running? Not looking for a cross country set I like going down hill more than up but weight is a factor. Like the look of hope tech v2's.

Tyre advice needed!

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and I know that this topic has been covered already but I'm still unsure what tyres to choose. Basically, I'm from the UK where I used Tioga downhill tyres on my Planet X hard tail for just about every surface. I moved to Freo and chose Maxxis Cross Mark 26 x 2.10 front & rear because of its raised central bead, as I knew I would mainly be riding on roads, cycle paths, and the odd trail. I'm about to move up to Stoneville, right next to the old heritage railway line, which, as you know, is mainly pea gravel.

'13 Merida Matts Lite XT H/T

So i have had my Merida Matts Lite XT for a few weeks now and love it and has been great on some of the soft local trails around Narrabeen lakes and a few of the smoother trails off the Wakehurst parkway... but on Sun i took it for a run around Manly Dam was still good but i could see how much easier the dual suspension bikes were handling compared to me bouncing all over the place with my hard tail...

My Q is did i buy the wrong bike for these types of rides, i.e Manly Dam, Oxford Falls, Cascades, Red hill etc

Cheers for any advise
Adam

Firstly would like to say hello to everyone here being a new member.

The title is pretty self explanatory, I'm in the process of looking for a new bike.

I have been out of the bike scene for a couple of years so not sure whats a good buy these days.

The budget is set at about $2300 for the bike leaving another $200 for some new gear / accessories.

Looking for a DS rig for some trail / endure style riding.

Currently have my eyes on a 2013 Giant Trance 29er X1 as i can pick one of these up for just under $2300.

What shoes do you wear when riding flats?

Just interested to know if people buy MTB specific shoes or just wear regular trainers, skate shoes whatever?
Cheers

650b has got me thinkin.most of the pros of a 26er and most. of the pros of a 29er but none of the cons of a 29er.interesting.just wandering what would happen if the 29er rider was to put 650b on his bike .how would it handle?better or worse...btw im not a 29er rider or 650b,im still a 26er
