Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Red/Closed

From the official mailing list:

Dear Riders,

After further investigation it has been decided that the mountain bike trail at Manly Dam is now OFFICIALLY CLOSED due to the recent rain and extremely wet track conditions.

It will remain closed until further notice. Please try to stay off the track until it is officially re-opened and all signs have been removed.
There will be a note posted on the website regarding closure.

Anyone wishing to be added to the mailing list can email us at: [email protected]

We believe there may be mountain biking opportunities around Red Hill and Oxford Falls area, but unfortunately at this point in time we have not got the capacity to be more specific.

Thanks for your co-operation in this matter.

Kind Regards,

Manly Dam Rangers

At least they are trying. Someone has set the rangers straight and they have followed up with:

Please DISREGARD previous comments about Red Hill and Oxford Falls- I have been made aware that both these places are either forbidden or worse off drainage-wise than Manly Dam. PLEASE DO NOT RIDE THERE!

Suggestions from fellow bikers have been West Head and Terrey Hills fire trails. Please do your best to ensure riding is allowed in those areas before you commence. Please also be aware the rain has been wide spread and may have impacted these areas heavily as well.
West Head road, although a road, is often a very pleasant ride.

Unfortunately they still dont know what XC MTB is all about. Most of us prefer and love single trail and they are sugesting fire roads and west head road. Why buy a 4-5k MTB to ride it on the road.

I know there has been alot of rain and the trails are soaked but they still dont get the sort of riding we want.

Atleast they are trying! Hopefully it will only get better.

i'd like to thank the rangers for this as i see it as the start of them getting the idea of what a popular and growing sport they have on there hands, o.k, they may have given out some mis-informed alternatives but at least they are trying, no organisation would continue giving out wrong information, so therefore i think it would edge them for further education on the subject, so alternatives could be given correctly.

thanks rangers

I agree.

I also think, (I know there's a lot to do/organise etc) if we can get some track work days under way for MD, my feeling is there is potential for several hundred folk to turn up.......

over the weekend. Firslty, letting them know how much we appreciate the reinstatement of trail closures to protect the asset, and secondly with a suggestion about mentioning alternative rides to improve compliance with closure notices. This they seem to have taken on board, to their credit.

However, I suggested Terrey Hills, DH +C and P+L to be exact. Not sure where Red Hill and OF came from!

Sure, singletrack is what we all prefer, but for now we have to work with what we have that will survive use in wet conditions. Which, locally, is fire trail.

Having a ranger who is actually prepared to listen and act on feedback in a consultative manner is light years ahead of the response that was typical as recently as April this year.

Like us, they're human and they respond better to being appreciated than being slammed. Sure, they won;t get it right all the time. It's an edumacation process. They've offered an olive branch, so let's play nice with them, eh? Smiling
