Manly Dam update for 28 Jun

Manly Dam
Status:
Amber/Some Issues

There are "closed" signs up so the track may well be closed - although Warringah Council's Manly Dam web page says it is open.

But if you were to ride past the signs you might find the track is generally "damp" in many parts rather than wet, with avoidable puddles.

  • The usual permanently wet sections - after Manly Vale School, after Curl Curl Creek, and up to Allambie Shops, are all wet but rideable.
  • The quagmire before Southern Cross Drive is quite a big quagmire.
  • And the timber section at the end is slippery.

Your bike will need a wash and some drivetrain adjustments after a ride in the present conditions.

Conclusion: I recommend you consider Manly Dam "amber" until further notice.

Hate to state the obvious but i would have thought if there were signs up saying it was closed you would believe them over a website....

The idea isnt to be able to ride around the damp bits as it damages the trail by widening it....

We already have enough trouble with Manly Dam and people riding past the closed signs only shows further reason as to why they should close it

well last saturday i called the council and they said it was open but likely the sign had not been taken down...
i only saw one at the entrance to the sniggle accross the top of the golf course.

I rode it Monday and it wasn't too bad but when I rode it on Thursday it was a lot wetter. The Warringah Council's website says it is open and there is only one sign still up saying it is closed which I'm guessing they forgot to take down as that part of the trail is actually the driest out of the entire trail. I would like to think that the website should be the easiest/fastest to update and the most accurate on if the trail is closed or open, right? Meaning if the website says open, and all the closed signs are up on the trail I would assume that they are still working to take the signs down. And if the website says closed, and no closed signs are up then they are working on putting up the signs. So I think we should all be going by the website, yes? This especially makes sense for people who live an hour or two away as they don't want to drive all that way to find out the website was wrong.

And although it was a bit wet, it couldn't have been too bad as I broke my personal best time by 40 seconds which I've been trying to break for 2 years now. YEOW!

I guess i am just overly cautious

I dont know if anyone will agree but i think for the greater good of the trail and the use of it at the moment we would be better off staying off it if it is questionable. The trail has the real threat of being taken off us still (someone please correct me if i am wrong) and excessive use in the wet conditions will only give those who dont want us there even more ammunition to keep us off the trail permanantly

The way it looked to me was that *obviously* somebody forgot to take down the sign because when that part of the track is "officially closed" they put a gate across as well as the sign. And in the old days I'd also get an email saying it was closed - don't get me started on that change of policy.

Of course you could consider they forgot to put up the gate AND change their web site (and their Facebook page) but to me it looked more obviously open than closed.

I just wish they would have a trail maintenance day so we could go in there and fix the eroded sections. As far as I know they haven't had a maintenance day in years which is mind blowing considering it's the closest and best track around Sydney and the most used (hundreds of bikers each weekend). There are only like 5-10 sections where it is muddy and they all could easily be fixed by building a boardwalk or some other method. Why oh why can't we have a trail maintenance day?!
