Ride Guide needed for Upper north shore (wednesday or thursday)

G'day guys im keen to go test out my new ride and the capabilities of my knee ( 2 months out of a reconstruction). Iv heard all the tracks have changed since last time i was riding so id love it if someone could show me around a few. Because of my knee ill be taking it all reasonably slow and cautious so if theres a beginner out there that knows a few of the tracks that would be great as well.

Im thinking either Wahroonga or Cascades area. Anyone keen? contact me on 0413 403 498.

Cheers
Alex

Dirtworks Canoe Bridge

Dirtworks on this weekend and am thinking about how to approach the infamous canoe bridge.

Anyone got any tips on how to ride across? I've checked out Pikey's video and he makes it look easy.......

New Cannondale distributor?

I noticed today that there is now an Oz distributor back on the Cannondale US website. A couple of months ago, they seem to have disappeared. Additionally, the address has changed to Stanmore from Warriewood, and the name of the organisation is Cycling Sports Group, the same as the UK. The cannondale.com.au URL gets diverted off to some guy's blog.

Does this mean there's been a change in distributor?

Dirt Works Tyre choice

Any suggestions for tyre choice for DW, at the moment my steed is wearing Racing Ralph's and I've been more then happy with them, but with this weather and not having ridden DW before I'm beginning to wonder if I should be considering a more intermediate? Any thoughts or experience with the loop and conditions would be great.

cheers

Mt Annan is now free

In case you havent heard, there is now no entry charge to Mt. Annan. Went there today with 3 bikes and 5 in the car and it cost nothing.

Appin condition?

Does anyone know the condition of the appin trail? Was thinking of heading there Tuesday morning. I've never been there before, so not sure if it drains well or not.

Looks like it's only XC mtb in China..... or at least on the city wall in Xian Smiling

How difficult is Mt Annan?

Looking for an Easter Tuesday Family outing and was interested in heading to Mt. Annan Botanic Gardens. However, I'd like to know how easy the green route is? My 3 year old is a maniac on his BMX and is putting in some decent k's (10+ on bike paths) at the moment, not to mention spending every other second jumping off gutters and rolling down other people's terraced gardens so I wonder if he is up to the challenge?
Are there many/any tech sections?
Is it fairly smooth?
How are the hills?
etc.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Best rides for a novice on Nthn Beaches?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi all

If you've seen any of my previous posts I am a novice getting into XC. What rides on the Northern Beaches do you recommend for a relative novice? Not looking for anything too technical (yet)or too physically punishing!

Been riding Ryland (out & back) the single track that joins Ryland and the St Ives Showground, done Perimeter and Long (enjoyed that a lot). I live very close to Heath and cascades - enjoy that except for the climb out! Smiling

What else would you recommend I try?

Illegal tracks

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Can someone explain to me how so many people get away with riding on very popular walking tracks at manly dam?

When walking the dog this morning on a nice bit of walking track near where the construction work took place last week about 3 or 4 people rode past me?

One of them was flying and yelling for me to get out of the way.

Also on the sandy bit there were lots and lots of tyre tracks.

As i like ranger mtb rider cooperation it annoys me that people jeoperdise the reputation of mtb riders by riding illegally....

Derailer

I have a SRAMX4 Derailer and chain has been changed twice now from wear.

Is it better to change to Shimano derailer and new shimano hg chain.
Is it worth changing over?I have read shimano chains are better than Sram.

Music while riding speakers

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi all Smiling

Just thought I'd ask you mtb'ers if you've come across any decent speakers for riding?

99% of the time I ride on my own and like to listen to music so I have used the Altec Orbital 207 with an mp3 player for about 2 years and its awesome quality and volume but unfortunetly its no longer made and the newer version looks way too big to carry on my handle bars

I prefer speaker to ear plugs so I can hear whats going on, bike, cars ect

any ideas / suggestions

what I use now the 207 link ...

Acros AG-E Hydraulic shifting for mountain bikes

On display at Sea Otter last weekend apparently: Hydraulic shifting for mountain bikes:

http://www.gizmag.com/ag-e-hydraulic-shifting-fo...

175g grams lighter than either XTR or XX, and requires much less thumb pressure to shift gears than against stiff springs like in cable-operated systems.

If this interests you, just make sure you're sitting down when you hear the price tag. Eye-wink

Canberra choices

Heading down to the capital on Sunday and need a general consensus as to which one would be better off doin...
On Sunday, we're choosing between Majura, Sparrow or Kowen.
Sparrow we've done before but missed out on bobsled due to the forest works but not sure if its that worth doing again.

Kowen Park East - I've been researching and it looks to be coming around quite nicely but if there was a choice, what would be the best to choose?
Plus, is Kowen West or East the better option?

We'll be hitting up Stromlo on Mondee so just need to choose a run for Sundee.

29ers vs 26ers

Looking to upgrade the bike at some stage but a mate and i are reviewing the benefits from riding the 29ers. The mags reckon the 29ers are the way to go with some other recent reviews pitcing the 29ers over the 26 inch. Refer www.mbaction.com , MArch 2011 edition, pages 43-48.
A test ride may be the way to go perhaps?

Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd say G Day as a new member. I think this site is excellent. Lots of information to check out and heaps of experienced riders out there to share ideas. Three years into MTB riding and we're addicted i must say. Hoping to do some riding this Easter so we'll be checking out the calender and perhaps make some new friends.

Overnight MTB trip

I only have a few hours left to do on my Ls so over the easter public holidays my dad and i are going for a overnight trip. Does anyone know of any XC mtb places in any direction 3-4 hours drive away from Sydney?

Broken spoke...

I went riding the other day and when i was cleaning bike afterwards i noticed that one of my rear spokes on the casset side was broken. It has snapped at the end where the thread is inside the nipple.
Can i fix this myself with basic tools (chain whip and casset tool) and a new spoke ofcourse, or do in need to take this to a bike shop. If the latter is the solution, is $30 for a repair job decent value?
