Kiwarrak State Forest Overnight MTB Trip

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hey guys Im planning a over night trip to Kiwarrak state forest. Im wondering if there is a camping ground or somewhere to camp there? Also as i am going with only one friend, I was wondering if anyone out there would like to ride with us as we have never been there before and we would like someone to give us the royal tour... so to speak.
We are planning to head there on the 9th of may and stay until the 10th or the 11th weather permitting. If anyone is interested you can email me on [email protected] or text me on 0423-315-305.

Cheers Cain

^^ Newby here ^^

Hiya everyone.

Another forum I thought I would join (only bike forum!).

So anyways, just to say hi, bought a Felt Q520 two days ago, took it for a smash around the street love it cant wait till sunday when i get my first run through ourimbah.

Im guessing its gonna be very different to what i am used to. I rode enduro for 8 years, trying to sell the moto to pay for the sport where i have to use my own power. Silly i know but i guess its a lot more rewarding though.

Well, that is all.

Stans notubes advice

Just got a Stans NoTubes kit for the youngster's bike and was after some advice.

The rims it's going on are DT Swiss X430s. The instructions say that I can just put the rubber rim strip straight in, but I'm concerned about the spoke holes possibly rubbing and cutting through it over time.

Is it wiser to run a layer of the yellow tape around the rim first or am I worrying about nothing?

Thansk for your help. Smiling

Awaba trail status - can anyone advise?

Planning on riding Awaba on Sunday but not sure how the tracks have faired with the wet in Sydney and certainly don't want to ride the trails if they are water logged. Appreciate any updates from those that live near Awaba or have been out to check the track conditions. cheers

Dirtworks camping areas?

I've heard there's less camping areas in town this year but can't seem to get the maps off the dirtworks site.
Can anyone post a map up for me?

Forum Round up for Apr 29

Well it's been a while, so time to have a quick look at what people have been talking about here.

First up - good luck to all competing in the Dirtworks Classic 2011 on Sunday. Plenty of talk about that including the Dirtworks Canoe Bridge, Dirt Works Tyre choice and what went on at GNR on Easter Monday.

Now might be a good time to remind everyone that we have constantly updating graphs of BOM rainfall here, including Ten Mile Hollow (the half way point) and the rain doesn't look as bad there as it has been in Sydney. Also remember not to use the forum for trading of any kind, that is what the classifieds are for - and there has been a good deal of trading in Dirtworks event entries this week - anyone wanting to get in now could probably score an entry well under cost. That said, your bike will probably need a whole lot of TLC as despite the above the track certainly won't be dry!

Other threads getting a lot of traffic recently:

BigJosh asked about a Bottom bracket repair.
Hans noticed a New standard issue bike for NPWS rangers?
Given all the rain, jonp was looking for Suggestions for places to ride in wet conditions?
Sadly we also had a bit of talk about riding on Illegal tracks - although personally am not convinced the trail in question is illegal (see thread).
Some Newbie advice needed here.
Broc needed some First timer advice for Ourimba (sic)
How about some Music while riding speakers?
Or does anyone have recommendations for Phone sports tracker apps?

Dirt Works (trails)

Does anybody have a report on how wet the dirtworks trails are? Do they hold up to water very well.Or it going to be Capital Punishment 2010 style.

Garmin Edge 500 Workouts.

Looking at doing some silly time on the trainer.

What programs are people doing on their indoor trainers.
I am looking to do a basic program in Garmin Training Center to use for indoor workouts.
Any suggestions for intervals times etc ?

Boring as it may be 25mins on the trainer is 25mins of training.

Cheers

In Tuesday's Mercury:

DOWNHILL cyclist Joel Willis is a young sportsman going places … and fast.

Although only 13 years of age, Joel races in the under 15 age division, but this has not been a setback for the talented rider having built up an impressive list of achievements for one so young.

He is now a State champion after contesting the Downhill NSW championships in Awaba after beating some of the best riders in Australia.

Need Help! Northbridge Pump Track Maintenance day 14th may -

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

If any of you can lend us a hand with repairing the Northbridge Pump track on Sat May 14th it would be greatly appreciated. The rain has really hammered it and we need to fix the surface so it rolls fast again. If we get enough people (and soil) we will be able tweak the track and add more jumps, ...berms and pumps.

Suggestions for places to ride in wet conditions?

I have avoided riding much given all this wet weather in Sydney. Terry Hills is not very good. Manly Dam is out. Any suggestions on what rides (Sydney North and Northern Beaches) will be the driest/hold up best given the recent rain (and forecast rain)? Thanks.

Lost front wheel off my mountain bike - Myall Lakes - please help

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I was riding a trail near Dark Point at Myall Lakes (just north of Stewart and Lloyd campground) off Mungo Brush Road on the 13th of April 2011. When I returned to my car, i took front wheel off to pack bike. I accidently left the front wheel and 15 mm skewer by the gate of the fire trail (LHS of the road as you drive north). It's the only front wheel I have for my Giant Trance X2, and I use the bike both recreationally, sometimes in enduro, and occasionly for a smooth commute. The rim is pretty standard and I think its a Maxis Cross Mark tread.

Bottom bracket repair

I was riding at Stromlo and I noticed a squeaking sound coming from the bottom bracket. I want to repair/replace any parts myself. Do I need any special tools to do this job, and if so, what tools? (I don't want to take it to a bike shop because the last time I went, they forgot to put the axle back in the wheel :/)

Drivetrain Compatability

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Few questions about drivetrain Compatability with shimano and SRAM both having new stuff on the market in both 2 x 10 and 3 x 10. every review I read focuses on one brand or anther but not anything about the mix of the two.

Anyway currently I run, SRAM XO rear derailuer, SRAM 990 rear cassette, SRAM X0 shifters front and rear, Avid Juicey brakes, XTR front derailuer, XT 3 x 9 Crankset, XTR chain. The mix of XT / XTR on the front deraileur and crankset with SRAM rear works great and I have never experienced any problems.

Merida Whaka 100

All
Check this out - 100 ker held in the The Redwoods - Whakarewarewa Forest, Rotorua New Zealand.

http://www.n-duro.co.nz/whaka/

Basically 100km of riding single track - what a better way to see all that the Redwoods have to offer. There are 25km and 50km options also.

Could be a good replacement for the Angry Doctor in the event schedule, as race is on Saturday 22 October 2011.

A bit far to travel, but from what I can see of the course map, you basically ride a large % of what the forest has to offer in this single day.
