Recommend a bike

I'm in the market for buying a new hard tail. I would like disc brakes, but apart from that I have a pretty open mind. My budget is around $750-$1000. Can anyone recommend and make a model?

Good news from HSMBA

News just in from HSMBA. A great outcome for Northern Sydney Smiling

Hopefully this will take some pressure of Manly Dam. We should also hope other local landowners can follow this lead - well done Hornsby Council!

Quoting from the latest HSMBA mail...

On Wednesday 15th September Hornsby Council voted to support the establishment of a mountain bike facility within the Hornsby Park / Old Mans Valley area subject to funding.

The vote was unanimous and there were no objections.

If you get time go to the following site and leave a comment on the Mtb issue.

Sunday 26th ride - where?

Finally, half marathon is over, wife is away for a few weeks so I can leave the decorating and get back on the mtb. Looking for a trip out on Sunday morning, either Ourimbah or Appin? Don't frequent the trails enough to guide so anyone else fancy it?

Wanted to post this is in 'Tentative planning' but it wasn't an option? Am i missing something (apart from the obvious) Rob?

[Mod. moved to Chat. Usually you'd place in the location specific to where said tentative ride may be, but Appin & Ourimbah are two completely different places]

Erosion everywhere

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

In case you haven't noticed, we're a bit passionate about trail advocacy around here. I mean, without trails to ride on, where would MTB be?

Anyhow, another thing you might have noticed is that opponents of MTB have a standard list of complaints about cyclists - most of them unfounded. One of their favorites is their claim that mountain bike riders cause erosion.

3 x 9 or stuff it all off?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

When i bought my bike the guy before me converted it to a 2 x 9. So i was just wondering how i convert it back to a 3 x 9. He got rid of the small shimano slx chainring from the front cassette. Or is it worth just going to a single chain ring and loose all the excess weight, find an inbetween amount of teeth between the granny and middle (never use the top) I almost died riding today, did 40km without being on a saddle for 2 months i rode from st ives to the bottom of akuna bay and back up, my average pulse was 160-170!!!

Dirtbikes on Duck Holes Trail

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I went for a ride with some mates this morning. As we made our way down Duck Holes we noticed that it had been trashed by dirtbikes. We came around a corner half way down & they flew past. It was lucky no one got taken out as we passed a few other riders heading up & these clowns were flying. One bike was registered, the other wasn't. As we hit the bottom of the trail we found the geniuses ute parked opposite the gate complete with loading ramp/tie downs & helmet bags. While taking the rego number they came back & hid in the bushes to wait for us to leave.

FOUND: Sunnies

Found some sun glasses on Mona Vale road - 19-09-2010 around 4pm. Had some feathers on, perhaps the result of a magpie attack?

Contact me with a description (make and model) to get them back.

Random Track Additions

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

In case anyone noticed I've been adding some tracks to various places today. This may seem apparently random, but there is a reason:

See, I've also updated the Master KML File (aka. Google Earth feed) to only load/show detail when one zooms into an area. This makes things look a lot neater at a high level (see attached) and may have a side effect of making viewing this file in Google Earth faster... although I can't really tell Eye-wink

Are any Scott teams of 4 looking for an extra rider?
Keen to do the event again. Looking at a social team who wants to complete as many laps as possible.

Rebuilding your bike

I was too unwell to ride today, which sucks! But I found it to be a great opportunity to give the bike a strip down and rebuild. I like to start at the back of the bike and work my way forward, cleaning, re greasing and tuning every component.
Stripping the cassette is always fun but My favourite part is always re building the rear hub.
Mine is a sealed bearing twin star DT Swiss so once its cleaned out the best oil to use (that is cheap!) is the same stuff you use in the transmission of your car.

Video Shoot Location - Any Ideas?

I'm looking for a location within 1 hour of Sydney to shoot a commercial video of a remote controlled helicopter. The location needs to have reasonable vehicle access (a short walk is OK), a classic "Aussie Bush" look, and an open area (approx. 20m wide). All shots will be close to the ground, and ideally the ground needs to be dusty (ie not well covered with grass). Council-controlled land / crown land/ private property would be best since it's had to get permission to shoot in National Parks. Any suggestions?

12volt battery and charger

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all, I m looking at building a LED light setup for camp spots during 24 hr races etc.
Currently I have a bunch of LED lights on the way that need to be powered off a 12volt source.

Im looking for a 12 volt battery rated at 25Ah or greater and charger as well. Does anyone have battery and or charger lying around that they dont need? or know of a cheap source?
A gel or seal lead acid battery would be great.

I will put a build blog up once the bits arrive.

First time at the Oaks (Woodford to Glenbrook) - Am I going to get lost?

Hello all, I'm very pleased to report I'll be doing Woodford to Glenbrook for my first time ever tomorrow.

I'm chomping at the bit to get going and have even dug out my special riding pants.

I'm just a little nervous at getting lost on the trail. Is it fairly well signposted on the trail or am I likely to get lost?

I've had a look on this site and the FatHippy's but I think I probably need an idiots guide.

Drop off practice

A fine good Friday morning to all,

Pure and simply I suck at drop offs, and struggle to get confidence on drops offs that are on trails that I ride purley for the ouch factor when I inevitably stuff it up. I've just seen this photo and looks like it has minimal consequences for a fall, can somone point me in the direction of where i can find this spot . ( I'll even let you know wghen I'm going down so we can go halves in the prize money for australias funniest home video when we take out the grand prize !!!)

Cheers Sam

Dave Weagle’s Split Pivot suspension system awarded patent

From the man who brought you DW*Link, here's another one.

The spiel doesn't mention efficiency but does mention fun. Can we assume this is more for 'gravity' bikes then?

It looks a whole lot like Trek's ABP, as mentioned in the article:
