Those on the sharp end of cycling injuries want to keep the laws
SMH article on the merits of the federal law relating to compulsory wearing of helmets while cycling. Interestingly, the poll in the article is currently split 50/50! It's a no brainer for me. Protect yer noggin at all costs.

NoBMoB Feature in Pittwater Community Guide
A bit of shameless self promotion never goes amiss
I was asked to write a piece on MTB for Pittwater Community Guide and very nice to see it received a full page to itself (see attached).
Let's hope this encourages more people in the area to get out there!
Well my turn
I will be off the bike for a bit as I damaged a finger at work doing something I have done thousands of times, there goes my training now
HMBA charity night race this Saturday 18th
Saturday the 18th of september will see the introduction of a HMBA night race as a charity fund raiser. We are raising money to support the Westpac Rescue Helicopter which has made several visits to Awaba in the past year.
Race start will be at 6pm with registration opening at 5pm.
Cost: Adults $15, Children: $10 (all entry fees will go to charity)
Where: Awaba mountain bike park.
Expect a shortened version of the yellow course with a few surprises to keep things interesting.
This will be a timed 2 hour race and will use standard graded racing classes (ie A, B, C etc).
Race Across the Sky 2010
New trailer for the Leadville 100 2010 which Levi won and broke Lance Armstrongs record fairly easily.

Wheelset choice for AM bike
I'm planning on building an All Mountain bike. Something like a Santa Cruz Nomad or the like. It'll be used for riding around Sydney at places such as Red Hill and the Dam. Perhaps even down to Thredbo occasionally but not often. However I'm a bit unsure on wheelset choice.
The two I had in mind were the Mavic Crossmax SX or the Hope Hoops (Pro II hubs with Stan's ZTR Flow rims).
Mavics are lighter and do tubeless without tape. The Hope's have convertible hubs that fit almost any axle, meant to be reliable and have spokes which are easy to replace by any bike shop.
Fork making a squelchy noise
Hi NobMobbers,
My forks have started making a squelchy noise during the rebound & I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned about. It kinda sounds like the internal oil might have air bubbles as it gets forced throughout the workings.
Does this mean a major service is required, something with a quick DIY fix, or should I just ignore it?
The fork seems to be performing as normal, but not being an expert on these things, my perception of normal might be off the mark.
Cheap XTR Wheelset
Some cheap wheels if anyone is interested

Goodbye to Lidsdale Ride
Just got a call from SF and it would appear they need to move the logging of Lidsdale forward. Infact logging may start on the Eastern side of Forest Ridge Road as early as October.
Anyway thought it might be nice to get a fairwell to the forest ride happening sometime mid october.
The plan would be hit up the XC loop on the Sunday morning and then head over the highway to play around on the steeper more technical trails in the hardwood in the afternoon.
anyone keen?
Newbie needs riding partners ...
Hey I'm just getting into MTB riding really keen, trying to ride once a weekend at least, but I need some people to ride with? I think these group rides that are posted up here might be too technical for me to start with so I may not keep up. If anyone's keen on a few MTB rides with a newbie let me know !
Two looking for two others - Scott 24

Hi, Can anyone recommend a comfortable seat for a Giant Anthem X3. The seat that comes with the Giants is a bit too tough for my tail.
Thanks in advance

Terra Australis
Hi folks,
Anybody interested in competing in Terra Australis next year - March 21-25 ? All entry categories are teams of two this year.
Mt Annan
Just curious as to how many mobbers got out to Mt Annan over the opening weekend?
Any feedback?
Thought it was good but it was very much an enduro training track with a lot of exposed single track, next to some huge tanning power towers.
There were a lot of very tight switchbacks which resulted in lack of speed being picked up which was my biggest criticism.
Bridges were great and the artificial rock gardens werent bad either. A lot of smaller branch stubs still exposed which resulted in 3 flatties in our group.
Tubeless
Just wondering if anybody has used Joes tubeless conversion kit - I have used No tubes in the past so curious if there is a difference.

Which derailleur hanger
I would like to buy a spare hanger - after a close call I don't want to be left without one! This may seem like a silly question but how the hell do I know what hanger I need? So far, I have clicked on about 30 on a few online retailers and am going on what they look like compared to mine. I am assuming that there must be an easier way?!

DTV Shredder ~ Clip for Military Show
This is a little off topic.
although this is demo'd for military use, I can see these ending up in state forests to compete with trail bikes.

is there anyone who would trade their bike for one?

Advice about being caught speeding: Can cops REALLY tell how fast you're going if they're driving towards you?!
Another minor sting in the tail of Angry Dr. was that I got caught speeding on the way down.
Was I speeding? Maybe.
The cop car was travelling in the opposite direction and claims to have caught me whilst he was in motion using his nightrider style car.
Has anyone else been caught speeding like this? Is this possible?

Need a quick response, Closes 17 Sep.

Mountain bike riders set to blaze a trail through national parks
SYDNEY'S mountain bikers have always been hampered by one thing - a conspicuous lack of proper mountain trails.
Instead they have independently, usually illegally, carved their own tracks through national parks around the city fringes.
This could be about to change, with the state government to release a discussion paper today on ways of balancing the needs of the state's 30,000 dedicated mountain bike riders with those of people who go to national parks for the trees and wildlife, peace and quiet.
From SMH here (took up a good deal of page 3 in print):

Update 17/9: The St George & Sutherland Shire Leader piece:

DECCW media release is here:
http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/media/DecMedia...
And the paper is supposed to be here from today (not up as of 07:00) here... discussion closes 18 October:
Update: Closing date for comments is now 25 October:
https://mountainbiking.discussions.nsw.gov.au/
I cannot stress enough how important it is that everyone back this initiative! This means comment, comment, comment. Nothing is going to happen unless mountain bike riders show they have the numbers to justify proper facilities.
FWIW, I am meeting a NPWS Director Regional Manager (no longer acting director) this arvo for an informal chat that should now be pretty interesting
