Killed my Garmin Edge 800 with OTB!
Went over the bars today, came away a bit shaken but apart from that, just a few scratches...... except for my Garmin Edge 800 which bore the brunt of a rather hard rock, smashing it's screen. The little fella was bravely beeping away on the inside, even though his screen was destroyed. Has anyone else cracked their 800 screen and what was the remedy/how much?
[Mod. moved to geek gear]
Dang!
I went shopping this morning for a replacement for my Garmin heart rate monitor strap which carked it at the Mont, and bought a speed and cadence sensor as well, with the aim of fitting to my Cannondale Rize.
Got home, ripped open the packaging and read the instructions (yeah, I do that - weird, huh?) then went to put it on the non-drive side chain stay and .... stopped.
Bugger. How's this gonna work?
Garmin abroad question...
Hi all,
sounds like a silly question:
can i take my Garmin Edge 800 with me to NZ (I know i don't have the maps, I'm not worried about getting lost) and use it... will it aquire satellites and do the same job as if i was here in OZ when i upload activities??? anyone got any experience??
thanks

Faulty Garmin ANT+ HRM?
Hey all,
When I went out for yesterday's ride I discovered the HRM wasn't working. This was a bit odd as it was working just fine 5 days earlier.
Can't blame the battery as I tried a new one later. Can't blame the Edge GPS as amusingly when another rider passed me it picked up their HR for just a second or so.
Has anyone else had a similar problem where the HRM just stopped working and been able to coax it back into life? I tried rescan on the Edge, tried changing batteries as discussed but suspect the simple answer is the HRM itself has just died for no good reason

Garmin acquire MetriGear
What has this go to do with us you might ask? Well, MetriGear developed a really cool power meter that sits in the pedal shaft.
One can hope for power stats for each leg, and on the up/down stroke, etc. Well, I am anyhow... so long as the price is right

Garmin firmware update
FYI there's a firmware upgrade available on the Garmin web site for Edge 605/705 devices.
From 3.10 to 3.20, June 14 2010
One item that caught my attention that I had questioned Garmin support about in the past, and ultimately requested as a future 'feature' is:
Backlight setting now saved to configuration and set automatically on power-on.
I've updated my 705 and will test it out tomorrow.
cheers

Issues with Edge500 firmware 2.30?
Annoyingly my Garmin Edge 500 has begun acting up when connecting to the PC's USB port.
I'm not completely sure, but think this might be as a result of updating to the latest version of the firmware (unit software). In fact, checking the last upload that went without trouble was version 2.29 and the unit now has version 2.30 (although - interestingly this is what the unit says it has, the upload I just managed to work using a laptop says 2.29 still - that's a worry!) would say that is the case.
motionbased problems
ok, i've not had broadband for a while and am now back in the land of the living with my new connection. i've been saving all my rides on my gps and they all show up on the history section. i've gone to upload them onto my inbox on motionbased and after initially uploading for a while it says once comlete that there are no new rides on my device!!!! what gives???
by the way, some of you already know i'm far from being an I.T. expert but this is a fairly basic task!
Bike Route Toaster
Very useful:
http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/
Turn on OSM (Open Street Map) and cycle/walk auto routing (in the right sidebar) and the cycle layer (right button on the map).
