External bottom bracket - how much friction should there be?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

On the weekend I installed a brand new XTR bottom bracket and XT crankset into a new frame. Before installing the chain I was interested to see how freely the crankset would spin. To my surprise I found that the crankset could not maintain momentum as soon as I stopped turning it.

I've taken off similar components on other bikes and never thought to see how freely the crankset spins. Has anyone tried this themselves and had different results? If so, any suggestions on why my set up seems to have a lot of friction.

Before people ask:

- I greased all the parts that need to be greased.

SRAM vs Shimano shifter action, a revelation

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I feel like such a putz so I'm looking for reassuring words. Am I the only one who didn't realise you can use a Shimano trigger shifter like a SRAM? i.e. you can change up by pushing with your thumb as well as the 'traditional' Shimano way of pulling with your finger.

Calling all wheel builders. I need help with spoke length

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I managed to spectacularly pull a spoke nipple straight through the rear rim on my commuter last week. It looks like someone has shot a bullet through the rim, consequently the rim is cactus and needs replacing. It was a cheap (OEM) rim on a cheap (OEM) hub so don't want to replace it at great expense with something super light and expensive. Because the hub is still ok I've decided to save a few $$$ and have a go at building a wheel myself. However I am having trouble determining which spoke lengths I need.

Is there a difference between Shimano BB71 or BB91?

I noticed a creak in the bottom bracket this morning, obviously due to too much wet sandy riding. The specs for my Reign state it has a Press Fit Bottom Bracket BB71. I cant find any shimano tech docs on a BB71. I can fnd tech docs on a BB91. Overseas I can find BB71 for sale but only BB91 in Aus. I am guessing a BB71 is in fact a BB91. Can anyone confirm if they are indeed the same or if they are different. I will need to order one as you cant just rip the cups out and regrease (I dont think) but have to replace the lot.
