Flung out...

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

After missing out on the Angry Doctor, the Highland Fling was last big MTB marathon race on the calendar for the year so all my prep/training was aimed at a having a solid crack. I had a conservative Scott 24, a good Around the Bay (roadie), a good Sydney to Gong (roadie again) and various training rides with Steve 01/02/03, Bruce and Gaz in between.

As I broke a couple of ribs in the Angry Doctor I hadn't been able to train as much as I wanted for the full fling so decided to give the half fling a go.

A medium to quick paced ride around the dam mid week at night I will be just doing one standard non stop lap of the dam this is enough for me as I will be riding there and then home so also wont be hanging around afterwards.

After a cold night in the tent and then a long queue for the toilets Chitts and I finally arrived at the start line at about 7.20am and were well back in the pack. When I finally got over the start line and got moving, I started to work through the pack towards the front but there seemed like a lot of slower riders that were in front of me and there were numerous traffic jams for no obvious reason. Cruised into the first transition feeling great at about 1 hour 26 minute having passed large numbers of riders, average heart rate was in the 140s and average speed up around 20km/h.

As always the advance party had reserved a large plot for camp nobmob, thanks Pikey, and duely set up camp complete with girlfriend who would be experiencing her first every camping trip. What better way to experience camping than with the 'mob.

We left a balmy Sydney and watched the temperature plummet as we reached Bundanoon - it was in the low teens and the wind chill factor made it even colder. Luckily I packed a warm jacket, other not so lucky like GeordieAndy had to survive in shorts and a light top.

Pikey set up a great camp near the bush toilet and Saturday night saw us huddled together for warmth drinking beer and talking shit.

The Highland Fling is over for another year.
Was lucky enough to stay in nice warm bed in bundanoon only 4-5km from the start, would of been super cold in a tent.

My first DNF

It was a great day for a race, felt good at the start. Started a little further back in the pack than i would have liked but was starting with two other friends on their first full fling. The gun went off & we were away, after fighting through the pack I was happy with my position after the first river crossing. Though the stomach wasnt feeling to good, had a bannana before the first single track & started to feel better. Spotted a friend further ahead & chased him down catching & passing him at the first transition, as i didnt stop.
