Manly Dam Tour
This Sunday I'll be showing a guy around Manly Dam for (his) first time. The dude is relatively fit [ allegedly ] so although this won't be full speed we won't be taking it that easy. There will probably be stops for technical practice along the way - my mate is new to off road riding so will need this. Anyhow - so anyone interested in this sort of ride please post a reply and come along.
Where: Outside Hydrolics Lab, Corner of King/Arana, Manly Vale
When: 8:30am, Sunday 19 Nov
What: Medium paced riding of the Dam circuit with stops for practice and directions along the way.

Commuting
There was something a little different going on this week... a spot of 'commuting' on the bike. Well, sort of commuting - not in the usual sense (I walk to work daily) but in the 'riding on the road of an evening' way. The car needed some work so had to get to Gladesville from home in St Leonards and back. Dropping it one evening and collecting the next with a quick ride filling the gaps seemed the way to go...
... and to be honest, on this showing, commuting by bike must be a very sensible option. Not only is this going to keep you in great shape, but it might take just about the same time. Note that the trips this week were actually taken probably way after most people would be travelling - 7-8pm so the advantage of the bike is very much diminished, but even so, the time taken to ride was only twice that of the trip by car. Let's not forget during the peak I wouldn't have been able to drive in... erm... the rather rapid way I usually do - there would be much more time spent queuing at intersections and the like.

bike shops not being open on a sunday
i would just like to ask why aren't bike shops ope on sunday's? is i just me or is mtb riding a leisure activity? and dont people do their leisure activities on the weekend? like me for instance i work during the week and on saturday so i cant get to bike shops that often and when i want to go and buy a new bike the shop is closed! that really bugs me!

Short Track Racing
So there's a few of you racing (riding?) the Highland Fling, but for those that think that 100km is a bit to far (or those whose legs are still spinning after the Fling) there's short track racing at St Ives Showground the following weekend. See www.mwmtb.com for more details.
Even if you're not racing it's worth while to come & have a look with virtually the whole track visible from a view spectator spots and the action will be very fast and furious.

PS If you pass a guy on what looks like a road bike with only one gear at the Fling say hello!

First MTB
Hello my name is charles and i am new to mountain bike riding. I am looking at buying a first bike and am willing to spend up to around $850. Any advice or help would be much appreciated. Thank you

Manly Dam Partial Closures
Just in from the rangers:
Firetrail maintenance works
The Manly Dam Firetrail (the vehicular access road) will be closed to all users for maintenance works weekdays from Monday 13th November 2006.
This closure will prevent access to all sections of the fire trail and the single track at Allambie Hts to the Childrens Playground at Cootamundra Drive Allambie Hts.
These works will take approximately three weeks.
The closed areas will blocked off with barrier fencing and tape.
Alternative access to other parts of bikecircuit track via local roads must be sought during the week as heavy machinery and trucks will be present on the trail.
Access to the above areas will be available on weekends only for the duration of works.
Powerline Works
Energy Australia will be working beneath powerlines at Allambie Heights in the Park weekdays from Monday 13th November 2006 for approximately 1 week.
Care must be taken on the Allambie Heights side of the circuit from Cootamundra Drive Allambie Heights to King St Manly Vale due to the presense of heavy machinery for vegetation clearing under powerlines.
Any enquiries please forward to us via email or the phone numbers listed below.

I can't quiet figure out where Nicole is talking about - but by the sounds of it staying away completely in the week is the go - which shouldn't be a problem for most of us office bound folk

Suggestion for a new bike?
Hi all,
I thought I would ask you guys for some advice about purchasing a new bike.
I am looking to upgrade to a dual suspension unit, spending no more than $3,000 - depending on any particular model's performance vs value. It would need to be an "all mountain" style XC bike as it is mainly used for fire trails, single trails, plus some limited fast downhill runs and slow technical bits. Think Manly Dam, think Red Hill, think Oxford Falls. I have asked some mates who have been very helpful, but I still want to widen my search.
During my research I looked at all the major brands I know of, like: Giant, Scott, Norco, Diamond Back, Mongoose, Kona, Iron Horse, Specialized, Cannondale. Based on price, so far I seem to like:

Rob's Homemade LEDs - Performance

Don't look directly at the lights!
Erm... does my helmet need a wash?
So - what everyone wants to know is, "Just how do these perform?"... the good news is: very, very well :)

Rob's Homemade LEDs - Batteries
The rule of thumb for driving LEDs with the 3021 seems to be: Sum the total voltage drop over LEDs to drive and add 1v for headroom.
NB: in fact any source above 16v (up to 32v) will probably do the job given the specs of the 3021. And if you're willing to spend a little extra and get the 4015 BoostPuck (which is pin compatible and should work with the circuit above) a voltage source less than this will do. Erm... although at the moment these only seem to come in 350mA flavour so you'd be sacrificing a lot of brightness or be looking at LEDs of different specification.
