Thoughts & advice on first ever bike build

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi there,

Currently on an anthem but decided I wanted a bike with more travel for a bit more 'fun'. I've decided to go about building it myself for a couple of reasons. I'm a poor bike mechanic and this should be a good practical lesson and I also don't have the money upfront to drop it on a bike in the lbs.

Any takers for Saturday AM rides (Cascades, along single track on Mona Vale, through Garigal, back into cascades = ~28Kms)

Any MTB riding groups doing ~25-30Km @ 2Hr-2.5hr XC with some sections of technical riding around the Davidson/Belrose/Oxford Falls areas ?
I'm keen to join a keen group for Saturday morning rides ?

Any takers ?

The most scenically stunning ride I've done (or walk...having previously been a bushwalker and now been converted to MTBs). This is an undulating, sometimes nicely rocky and bumpy ride, but not for the adventure seekers. However it's a great long ride (20 kms) for relative newbies and has good ups and downs. The joy of this one is in the bush, the wildlife and the history.

Awaba State Forest update for 20 Dec

Status:
Green/Open

This is an update from Sunday. Any soft sand had been compacted nicely and the big puddle was filled with some logs/branches so all good.

National Series #3 - Stromlo

Below is a preview, click to read the full post
When:
Friday, 10 February, 2012 - 08:00

The meeting times are 'ready to ride'. If you need time to prepare equipment then please arrive a few minutes earlier.

Ride Database Entry:
Stromlo Forest Park
Meeting Point:

Uriarra Road, just up from the Uriarra Road/Coppins Crossing Road turnoff.

Show on Google maps: Meeting point. Login or register to get directions.

Round 3 of the National XC Series is held at Stromlo. I figured its close enough for the Nobmobbers to be interested.

Racaing XC at Stromlo is something else. Sure - riding all the trails in a 24, or at the end of Capital Punishment is good, but imagine hitting the Luge track full gas with fresh legs.....
The XC at National level is not to be feared, just enjoyed. We all spend so much on bikes, kit etc - why not ride with the best in the country - in your own age group?

When:
Friday, 2 March, 2012 - 08:00

The meeting times are 'ready to ride'. If you need time to prepare equipment then please arrive a few minutes earlier.

Ride Database Entry:
Awaba State Forest
Meeting Point:

Just up Jenkins Road from corner with Mount Faulk Road.

Show on Google maps: Meeting point. Login or register to get directions.

This is final round of the 2011/12 National XC Series.
Its the first time it will be held at Awaba, and I really want to try and encourage as many of you as possible to give it a crack.

We dont have a proper state series (yet.....) so some might worry that there is a big jump from club level racing up to National level racing.
Far from it.
At National level racing there are age-groups. Its not just A / B / C / D grade. So you can be sure you will be racing people of a similar vintage. That means the track will be clearer for you.
