Oaks trail night ride

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi All,

I did a night ride a few months ago with a group on the Oaks trail and thought that i might organise one for the folks here. I find it a much more interesting trail at night time, but chilli at the moment.

I thought I would plan this in advance for a late August or early September.

MTB Training (What is the best approach)

I'm keen to increase my average speed but not sure on the approach.

If I want to ride 40km @ 20km per hr (Cascades/Terry Hills)
- Do I ride 20km (ave) for 30min and then increase by increments to 2hrs OR
- Do I ride the entire 40km over and over and then maybe I hit 20km/hr

Also what Cadence should I aim for, is average 80 enough and how is average cadence calculated (Garmin 705) when you are going downhill (not pedaling)

gear choice and pedaling technique?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

with regards to beanie's post about 1 x 9, i'm getting a little confused with which is the best gear to be getting more speed with i've only recently started using the big ring, because after sitting in middle ring and smallest cog after a while there's less resistance and i seem to spin the legs and feel no gain, so then switch to big ring and get a, or what seems like a slower rotation but more resistance to work against and then the other scenario is getting half way up the hill and then struggling to keep pedaling momentum by making a too complicated gear change half way up, so was just wo

Travel Insurance / Bike Insurance

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

my partner and I are about to head off on a 5 week road trip through US/Canada and are taking our bikes.
I'm researching the best option of travel insurance /bike insurance for the trip.

i wanted to get others advice/experience on what they have found to be the best value for money, value being good coverage when they have taken their bikes OS.

FYI - i have contacted my home content insurance provider as we currently have our bikes insured with them a portable items and they will cover the bikes overseas for a max of $10k for all bikes (value of our bikes will be $11k).

Chains suck, Chain suck.

When my chain gets muddy it suffers chain suck really bad. I wanna throw my bike into the bush (nearly did on saturday).
Is it an old chain thats stretched, middle cog too old or an inherent problem in mud, The drivetrain was changed at the same time a few months ago, please HEELLPP , this drives me NUTS....!!!!

Bikes Stolen From Garage

Having recently moved from an apartment to a house with a garage, I wanted to ask about bike theft from garages (I am having nightmares)!!

For those of you who have experienced it, I have a few questions:
1) Was it overnight, or while you are at work?
2) Were the bikes locked to an immovable object and if so were the locks cut, walls damaged etc?
3) What sort of garage doors did you have and how did they gain access?
4) Any brilliant, but not too expensive solutions?
Thanks
Ian
