appin sydney best track?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

hey all, i just rode appin for the first time yesterday , after downloading one of the great 'KML ' files supplied by the team at nobmob and importing it into "my maps" folder , when logged into google maps on the desktop. Then when i open google earth on my iphone i can login to "my google maps" and know exactly where i am on the trail (or not). Alternatively for you old skool types just follow the yellow arrows . oh me so funny.

Old Man's Valley mountain bike trail - we need more numbers

Looking at the numbers (five so far) from the MTB community registered to attend Hornsby Shire Council meeting this coming Wednesday evening, we are not going to make a big enough impression with those numbers. Do you want a new trail close to our city folks? Hawkeye has kindly alerted us to this event and we need only 2 hours of your time this Wednesday to pop in to attend and show support for a new trail. Here is the link Hawkeye posted http://nobmob.com/node/35182

Please check it out, register to attend and show you support.

Capital Punishment Water Stop?

Does anyone know if there is a water refill station during the "non-race" section through the streets of Canberra? I'm doing the 50km and hoping to get away with just one bottle.

George River

I've found a ride on Garmin's Connect website that seems interesting.

It's in the region of Campbeltown, near the George River Nature Reserve.

Anybody went for a ride over there? Any good?

Ive created a fundraising team page (Not a Race Team)

You will need to register first. When registering leave the race team blank unless you are joining someones team.

Make sure you are logged into the site after registering then go to the team page.

Team page can be found here http://w2g12.gofundraise.com.au/page/bmorc

There is an option to join the team.

Just to note, at the moment. I cant Manage or join the team myself. Not sure if there is a bug or the team page needs to be approved first.

Help Needed: Old Man's Valley mountain bike trail plans under threat

The NIMBYs are at it again, threatening to derail well-advanced plans for mountain bike trails in Old Man's Valley in Hornsby. If they succeed, trails could be deferred for quite some time, maybe indefinitely. We saw how that works with the watering-down of the Golden Jubilee mountain bike park and the removal of the singletrack loop.

To stop that happening again, we need to show that we are are a legitimate group, that the proposal has deep support, and that these few residents' concerns are unfounded.

What you can do

To do that, we need a strong show of numbers at the Hornsby Council meeting, to outnumber the NIMBYs who we expect to try to stack the meeting.

If you want to do your bit, make plans now and most importantly turn up at 7pm Wednesday 18 April at Hornsby Council's Chambers, 296 Pacific Highway Hornsby.

If you're coming, please indicate here: http://nobmob.com/node/35182

**** UPDATE 16/4/2012 6:23pm ****
This meeting has been cancelled due - I believe - to the council report not being completed by deadline.

The agenda item has therefore been bumped to a future Council meeting

More info to follow when it comes to hand.

Family friendly rides near Mt Wilson, Blue Mountains?

I'm planning a family trip to the Mt Wilson area to see the autumn leaves. Are there any family friendly rides (i.e. scenic, not too steep or rocky) in that area that can be enjoyed by the whole family?

Cheers, Hans

Rileys Mountain Trail, anyone know whats going on?

On the weekend I rode out to the Nepean lookouts and planned to ride Rileys Mountain Trail to the Nepean Narrows Lookdown. What I didnt expect to find was a recently machine graded single track (i was under the impression it was illegally done as i couldnt understand the purpose of the track. It was in an awful location as far as water management goes and didnt really lead anywhere. There was 3 existing prints in the soil, one mountain bike, one horse and the machine tread itself. I walked the trail as every couple of metres a spider web was across the track.

Four of us went up to Dungog today to check out the course for the 8hour enduro on The Common this coming weekend. It was our first experience of the trails and we've come away very impressed and looking forward to the weekend. We met Les, Chris and Al who were hard at work putting the finishing touches to the loop and the camping area. The course loop is brilliant with something for everyone and stunning views at every turn. It sounds like a great program across the weekend with live music, mtb movies under the stars and a 16inch bike race Saturday afternoon!

Trail etiquette: Who should give way on a (technical) hill?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

From what I've read (including on this site) ascending riders should give way to those coming down a trail/track. This seems counter-intuitive to me though, when one considers difficult climbs.

Here, the ascending rider is doing all the work, having to work at keeping a smooth rhythm, trying to stay on a decent line, dealing with loose stuff that can throw the bike, ...

The kind of climbing one finds on the Oaks, for example; steep, loose and bumpy. Where, if you stop for any reason, it's difficult to get going again.

Nice track, two aggro kiwis... :-)

Disclaimer: I found all kiwi MTB'ers to be courteous on their amazing trails... these two must be the exception... Smiling

For a bit of Easter humour read this NZ MTB'er's post: "Assaulted On The Flying Nun, Christchurch"

Note: Read all the comments (page 3) on this NZ thread below to get the full picture...not just the short video Eye-wink

Q: After seeing the longer video: Was the rider up his rear too pushy or not?

Chain quick connects

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

My chain broke again today while doing a Manly Dam loop, luckily i was on the last downhill stretch before crossing the dam when it happened. When I got home I went to repair my chain and noticed that I already had 2 quick connects (one was when i first bought the chain and the second was from a previous break 6 months ago which I repaired trackside).

As it stands now I have installed the third one (mainly to save cost of buying a new chain).

Need some wheel advice

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Had a bit of a mishap today - managed to reverse the car, with bikes on the bike rack, into a concrete pillar in an underground carpark. Bottom line is I've completely knackered the o/h's rear wheel - the cassette is warped, and the hub is twisted as well.
