DT Swiss RWS Thru Bolt - Report

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

hi guys,
couple weeks ago I was asking which thru bolt to get for a scott scale hard tail and i said i would report back once installed.
so here we go. took a little longer after CRC sent me a 100mm QR instead of the thru bolt, but to be fair, exchange and refund was pretty painless. also in the meantime jenson had received new stock and it was cheaper there anyway.

Mont 24hr - Female team mates needed

We have a bunch of teams entered into the Mont 24hr in March but are missing a few team members. We have a team of 4 and team of 6 (both female teams) that we are trying to complete. You'll be guaranteed to have an awesome time on and off the bike. The Mont course is not technical but it is fun, don't worry if you have not done a race before we will do a recon trip to Kowen before the event to check it out, and practise things like overtaking.....
So any girls out there looking for a team please PM me if you are keen or have any questions.

Travel insurance for cyclists

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I just noticed this and wanted to share...

While looking for some long term travel insurance (Note the "long term" part... ye-haaaaar!) noticed at least one company who had bike riding in their list of excluded activities. Ie. injuries suffered while riding would not be covered. WTF!!?

Why I bring this up is that if you're taking a trip O/S over the xmas/new year break be sure to read your travel insurance policy wording carefully!

FWIW, it's quite amazing some of the other exclusions they toss in there. No cover for any item left in a vehicle 'after dark' seems a common one.

No more derailleur?

An NZ company's go at a bike without derailleurs hanging out there to destroy. Uses a hub gear in the mid frame. Hard to believe that it'd have the same weight as the usual derailleurs, cluster, chainring setup. The way of the future for all MTB's? Apparently Specialized have been testing the Zerode out.

Online MTB Information / Magazine sources

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

All

Some great links and online sources and articles of MTB specific stuff have been posted up here in recent times .

I though I would start this post, to see if we could put our heads together and compile a list of some of the great free (or cheap) information sources that are out there that some of us may or may not be aware of.

For the regular stuff we can add links to this site so we have a one stop shop for some great information.

Some stuff that I have come across:

Bike Magazine on Zinio - 9 issues for A$6

ok so here goes a list of what i have to work with

the frame is currently a avanti monteri 2011 but even after the below upgrades i dont feel the frames working for me.

sid xx 100mm
elixer 3 brakes
mt 65 rims
x7 driveline
and of course the rest of the bike

also have a fox rp23 laying around

so my question is what should i go for as money is tight but want to build the best setup i can .

new rider

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi All
My wife surprised me for my birthday yesterday with a new mountain bike and would love to get involved with some riding.
Is there any times/courses/groups for old outer condition riders wishing to have some fun.
I live pretty close to Leggy/Glenrock rode there a lot when I was a lot younger but things have changed since the late 70s/80s

Restored hunting trails from the description ... nice scenery and great rock armouring. ... not sure about the white pebbles, but doesn't seem to be scattered all over the place.

They've even got N2O cartridges, wondering what that would do to your tyre.

schwalbe double defense - mission impossible

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

okay, admitting defeat on this one. been trying to set up a tubeless wheel with a brand new racing ralph, the double defense version, and it just won't pop the bead.
i've been through two RRs before, one tubeless version and one evolution line. both of them i could just pump up with my track pump as if they had a tube in them. love the tyre, so this time i thought i'd go for the thicker sidewalls of the double defense line.
big mistake as it turns out.

Classified Madness

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Just a quick note to apologise for slamming the classified ads. I've been meaning to do this job for a while, and the rainy day forced me into action.
Jenny and I have collected, won, recieved, and even bought (shock!) stuff that we either dont need, cant ride, or have new versions of.
Each season comes round and we get some fresh stuff.
We are selling off everything we dont need.

Xmas is coming and you either need to buy things for others, or you need to buy things for yourself but have reduced funds....

Trainers

I'm out of action for a while after having my shoulder reconstructed and was thinking about buying a trainer to help keep my fitness up. So thoughts on which brands/types are good or not? I'll be using a 26er with road tyres.

Report backs new tracks for mountain bike riders

From the Manly Daily:

SEVERAL opportunities for new mountain bike trails and dirt jumps have been identified in a recent report commissioned by Warringah Council.

Mayor Michael Regan said the council had already give “in-principle” agreement to link trails at Forestville Park to new tracks being built at Garigal National Park.

The paper it discusses can be downloaded here:

Mountain Biking in Warringah Research and Directions.

This is currently on the council's public comment page which says:

Submissions are to be addressed to the General Manager and can be emailed to [email protected] or posted to the Civic Centre, 725 Pittwater Road Dee Why 2099.

Give us your comments by COB Thursday 15 December.

Manly Dam is CLOSED weekend 26/27 Nov

Sorry to say, but as can only be expected after all this rain Manly Dam will be closed this weekend (26/27 Nov). See Manly Dam update for 25 Nov.

Interestingly this week there has been a rather heated discussion about the merits of the trail status system (aka. traffic lights - see Latest Trail Status feature) so at this point it's probably worth mentioning that this is a community site and relies on the interaction of that community for features like the traffic lights to stay current.

So a big shout out to all those who get involved and let everyone know about the status of local trails. Thank you Smiling

Front/rear suspension balance

Hello all,

Been wondering something with my suspension. The most sag I can get on my forks is about 12% ( I have the correct spring for my weight). The question is what should I do with the rear suspension. Set it up with 20% sag like most people recommend or keep it at 12% to make it even with the front. Would making the rear softer affect the handling much?

Thanks
