HELP - lost dog

Rusty, a brown and white Welsh Springer Spaniel, went missing on NYE from Wakehurst Parkway just off the southern end of the dam.

The dog was seen yesterday (Thrusday 5th Jan 2012) at about 5pm near the Alambie road end of the pipeline track.

If anyone finds or sees him please call Nic on 0412 931 354.

Kona Stinky - possible purchase and looking for advice

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all,

My wife is keen to get into DH and FR after a year of riding XC, and we've come across a 2005 Kona Stinky with an asking price of $1000. It was bought brand new in 2009 (it was in the bike shop for 4 years still in its box in a back storeroom until 2009) and has been well maintained since then. I don't have any knowledge of Kona bikes nor of DH and I was really just after some advice/guidance on whether or not this would be a good purchase, in terms of the bike/model/price etc.

No mods have been made to it, and it appears to be in great nic.

Tubeless - again!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Tubeless - it's been discussed a lot and I'm thinking of giving it a go, but there's still a few things that I'm not clear on. I know there's plenty of people on here with experience of the various options, so I'm sure someone can clear things up for me.

My current setup - Maxxis Crossmark LUST tyres (ie fully tubeless) on DT Swiss 420SL rims (non tubeless)

So my questions are :-

1. What is the sealant for? Is it to seal at the bead (ie between tyre and rim) or is it to make a non tubeless tyre non-porous? Do I need it with tubeless tyres?

Any one night/ two day rides in the hunter valley?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Me and my buddy are looking towards going for a ride up in the hunter valley for one night and two days. We were wondering if there are any good trail networks where we could ride on and do a big loop. We were considering Pokolbin or Barrington. Any help please?

Frame stiffness on a dually

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Recently I upgraded by road bike from a lowish spec alloy/carbon to a high spec full carbon bike and have been gobsmacked by the difference it makes. I had always imagined that mere mortals wouldn't pick much of a difference and only the elite riders would notice the incremental benefits of the higher spec bike. The difference is not so much weight, but the power transfer and acceleration resulting from the stiffness of the frame and bb you end up with rocket like acceleration and awesome climbing.

Chainset question

Hi guys,
I will be changing my old Truvativ chainset, for a shimano Alivio one, but looking for the parts on CRC I came up with two options: 170 or 175mm. What's this? Which one should I get?
Another question: It is going to fit into the same Bottom Bracket or do I need to replace it as well?

I am planning to change the chain, rear derailleur (coz' I lost a jockey wheel), cassette, cable and housing.
Recommendations/tips?

P.S.
This is for my old spare bike, so I'm just trying to replace the parts like to like (entry level).

up for a new helmet . . . . .

OK,

After four and a half years of wonderful service - and protecting my noodle, my catlike helmet finaly broke.

Which raises the question of:

What do I replace it with?

There is no F#$%^ing way I am going to buy a helmet over the net - so I'm looking at what I can walk into a store and purchase in Perth.

I know I can get the exact same helmet from one of my Fav LBS's but I have looked at the new Laser and Specilized (Which my better half rides with).

I'm happy to go road (which I have now) - I don't use the peaks on helmets (Or they have snapped off when I face planted!),

Hi All,

I'm a noobie to this site. I recently posted a ride to hook up for this route:
1. Enter Cascades from Stone Pde;
2. Through Cascades (few nice fast downhills), with long (killer - read good training) uphill to Mona Vale Rd;
3. Cross Mona Vale at St Ives Wild Flower Garden;
4. Enter single track parallel (awesome single track) to Mona Vale, through St Ives Show Grounds;
5. Eventually arrive at intersection of Forest Way, Mona Vale Rd (opp corner is Supa Centa);
6. EDITED..... Private Message me...

Stolen Bikes -- Happy New Year!

So my inlaws are visiting from Canada. I did up some of our MTBs with slicks and stuff so they could cruise around Newy.
On their first ride, they locked them up in the city today and they got nicked. They'll be easy to spot...they are kinda oddly spec'd.

Please keep an eye out for them. I've included some photos below, but they are a little out of date with some of the components.
Thanks and Happy New Year!
Ken.

2011: How'd you go now 2013

OK It's that time of year. Time to Flush out the secret trainers, boast/moan about, admit to or otherwise tell us about the amount of riding you did this year.

Include all your cycling including indoor trainers and spin bikes.

So, I'll go first.

I had a pretty average 2010 doing 2000km, with a chunk of that on an indoor trainer so for 2011 I set myself a rough goal of doubling that. Something I managed to do while mostly avoiding the trainer.

Any members familiar with Wallarah Peninsula / Wallarah National Park?

I'm camping on holiday in the area and have done a couple of very rewarding recon rides. Loads of fire trails and single track although much is very, very rough and eroded. Terrain is diverse, coastal, beach, rock, gravel, mud, marsh, old sections of unused highway. Even discovered WWII fortifications at the top of a big hill near Catherine Hill Bay.

I've just had my first experience with 'Stans', CO2 cannisters, & installing a tubeless tyre. Quite straight forward, thank you to YouTube!

I have XTR tubeless ready rims. I have this evening taken off Kenda Small Block 8's (wirebead - with an inner tube) and replaced it with a proper tubeless tyre (Maxxis LUST Crossmark).

Getting fit, or going soft?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Over the past couple of years I've been increasing the intensity and distance of my rides to try and improve my fitness. I'm far from being a really fast rider, but I did finish the half fling in 3:01 this year, which is about 30 mins better than my time 2 years ago, so my fitness is improving. But here's the thing; in recent months I've found that if I drink more than 2 beers I get a hangover. My brother-in-law, a personal trainer, said he has seen this before with his clients - as they get fitter, their alcohol tolerance declines.

Victorian trails

I am heading down to melbourne for the next 2 weeks and I was planning to bring my bike. I will be staying around mornington and was hoping someone would be able to point me in the direction of some trails that were reasonably close and preferably single track.
Thanks

tight SRAM powerlink

Has anyone got any advice for undoing a tight powerlink? This is a new link (on a 10x2) on a new chain and bike – first cleaning. So tried to undo as I would my other ones and failed. So far I have tried cleaning it, and gone as far as using a tourniquet (with a lace) to try squeeze it together (the lace broke). All failed.

News: Cyclists rebuffed at Lake Parramatta "They don’t want their nice, quiet walks interrupted by a collision with a MTB"

Parramatta councillors decide against extra tracks at Lake Parramatta. Cr Julia Finn said some mountain bike riders had not remained on the fire trail and damaged vegetation.

“I don’t like people coming to council when they’ve done the wrong thing,” she said. “People treasure the serenity of Lake Parramatta. and they’re happy for it to stay hidden. They don’t want their nice, quiet walks interrupted by a collision with a mountain bike.”

Help with choosing new wheels

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

After 18 months riding my 2010 Trance X2 t looks like I’ve given the wheels too much of a battering. They have a number of dings and wobbles in them and I’ve been advised by Bike Addiction that they are beyond repair.

After almost buying completely the wrong wheels form Gazza, 9mm instead of 15QR (sorry for pulling out at the 11th hour) I’ve realized I have no idea where to start and am hoping for some help from the community.

What I know is:
- I ride hard (probably a bit too hard) so need something strong
- I’m cost conscious and don’t need the latest and greatest.
