SRAM x9 rear derailleur good replacement for sx5???

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi All,

Just getting into MTB after long absence.
Sons bike(casual rider) has sx5 rear derailleur which around the lower pulley is worn and bent. Over due for replacement.
After some research was considering the X9 as only a few more $$ than x5.
actuation same 1:1
thumb operated shifters are X7
8 speed cassette
3 speed crank
no experience with SRAM but happy to stick with it for now?

So X9 and maybe medium cage for better shifting or are other/better alternatives available?Note: family guy - like quality but low budget
Your opinions would be helpful

thanks
Dave

Adaptation from a classic joke, thought it may cause some amusement in an otherwise grim situation:

"A MAN DIED and was confronted by his Almighty Maker. He watched God take a clock off the shelf of a countless number of other clocks. The analogue clock was showing 12:10 and it had his name engraved in it.
“Not perfect, but pretty good,“ God said, and explained, “I have a clock for everyone. It is programmed to move forward 15 seconds each time the subject lies.“
The man stood in the room whilst God went into his office to get further records of the man.

Session

Is is possible to make the login session longer? I get logout after ~2 days… unless it's because I access NobMob from work too…? Which in this case, it would be nice to stay logged in on both.

ie. yes, I'm a lazy user that prefers more to click that type J

Women's MTBikes!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can pass on any experience or feed back regarding women's bikes, particularly in the $1 to $2k mark?
I'm looking to upgrade my girlfriends ride - Until now she has been riding a 2009 Giant Alias, its getting a bit tired, and I was looking at getting her on a 29er...

Whilst she is rather slow, she technically rides pretty well. She manages to conquer nearly all the downhill I do, and I was hoping the 29er may help on the hills.

I've short listed the following, but happy to hear anyone's thoughts or suggestions:

Kid friendly trails .... ?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hey Guys

I'm looking for some advice for trails which are ' kid ' friendly.

I have 2 boys ( 7 and 12 ) and the 7 year old has just graduated from the Narrabeen Lake loop to Perimeter and Long up at Terrey Hills.

It's been great because it means all 4 of us are going out riding together. Watching the kids riding is just fabulous fun....

We're planning a couple of trips away and I was hoping for some advice. We are considering going to Bundanoon / Wingello for a few days and later in the year are considering a trip to Forrest in Victoria.

Awaba Suggestions and Accomodation

I'm up Awaba way in a month or so and wanted to find some overnight accommodation near the trail so I can get an early start. Does anyone have a recommendation .. I'm struggling to find any great info on the Caravan Park whats it like?

Re the trail .. I gather the XC loop is the main feature .. is there anything else that shouldn't be missed?

Cheers Aaron

Distances of Glenrock trails?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hey

Was wondering if anyone knew the distances of the trails at Glenrock as I don't have a GPS or bike computer.

I normally ride a loop from grass trees, management trail around to snakes and ladders, quarry loop, seismic, pump action, gun club road, double barrel, twisties, reload, Kenny's, BJ's and shit happens from there I redo BJs and then use to management trail to ride back to the exit at fernleigh bike path.

I currently have no idea how long this loop is, any info or guesses would be appreciated.

Chris

Bike suggestion

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I am trying to get my husband into riding. I have a road and MTB and thinking of getting something that might suit both road and off road.
The trails we would do will be no harder than say Terrey Hills (Perimeter and Long). The purpose is for fitness.
Not wanting to spend a great deal either, say around $800.00. Any suggestions of a bike that may be suitable for both without breaking the bank? (My MTB is an Avanti 29inch hardtail, so I think a 29 inch also would be best).

[Mod. moved to MTB gear... you can ride any bike on road, but not necessarily off]

XX brakes - help needed

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

hi all,
i was just riding along when suddenly.... just kidding. in fact i was just replacing the pads in my rear brake today (which i've done lot's of times before).
so, i put the bleed block in to retract the pistons into the calliper, then put the pads in and noticed that they were much closer together than on previous pad swaps. i could hardly get the wheel in.
so i turned the contact point adjustment out a little and that opened the brake up a little but still not enough for the wheel to spin freely.

Found: tail light + gas bomb adapter Manly Dam

Found a not-cheap tail light on the Golf Course singletrack section of Manly Dam today, and an air chuck for a CO2 inflator near the hydro lab yesterday.

If you've lost either of these items, describe them accurately to me in a PM and we'll see what we can do about getting them back to you.

Capital Punishment 100 or Convict 100?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi everyone,

Trying to decide which of these two should be my first 100.

I know from looking at the profiles that the Convict 100 will be much harder but im not too concerned about that. I want quality single track.

From the description it doesn't sound like Convict 100 has a lot of single track, its all mostly fire trails?

Has anyone done both? Could you give me your opinion on which would be better from a ride point of view? Again the climbing doesn't bother me.

Cheers

Alberto

My biggest bubble yet / Bubble Theory

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Yesterday I had planned for a post work ride locally to my work. My bike had been left in the car all day but the windows had been down. I opened my boot and to my shock saw my biggest bubble yet! Not sure if the cause was related to a previous self sealing puncture or the heat. Not having a spare tread I figured I would try putting in a tube so I could still do my ride. I deflated the wheel and the bubble held shape. I'm now of belief that the bubble was caused by a previous self repaired puncture, air has slipped into the layers of the tyre and then sealing the inner layer.
