Pedals

Hi all,

I'm a newbie, not been to an orgnaised ride yet, but been doing some road work to start on my fitness.

As a newbie, I started out with the Merida MT 100. It came with the standard metal pedal (the one with spiked grips).

I don't have a pair of the clip on shoes , but am wondering what are the pros/con with using flat pedal vs toe and strap clips vs 'snap on snap off'. And excuse my lack of terminology.

Thanks.

Team Mate Wanted for Dungog 8hr and Paterson 8hr

I am 14 years old and am looking for a team mate to race with me in the Dungog and/or Paterson 8hr in Open pairs. I am fairly fit (I do about 200km a week on road + a mtb ride most weeks). I would prefer it to be a junior but doesn't really matter.

Where to ride around Lithgow

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hey guys I have a few days coming up in Lithgow and I'm keen to ride a few different trails, preferably single track.

Rydal - I'm pretty sure I will ride there due to the ease of the trail (the boy will like that).

Hassans Walls - The videos I've seen of Hassans Walls look good, but I'm not sure what the best trails are? I ride a 6" travel bike so a bit of rough descending is great but I also like XC.

Newnes/Newnes Plateau - What is the pick of the single track in Newnes/Newnes Plateau? And are the Enduro Loops XC Enduro or Gravity Enduro?

Who has right of way?

Hi there,

So I was in my car coming up to a round about. There is a bike lane on the left hand side that ends at the round about and continues on the other sided. I pass a cyclist leading up to the round about. I need to turn left so I put the indicators on. Sensing that the cyclist was not going to slow, I come to a complete stop. Cyclist rides through the round about without a care in the world. So the question is who has right of way in this situation?

Stuffing it for everyone Part 2

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all

An increasingly common question by a number of land managers is if they were to provide new single track how do they ban Strava racers from their tracks?

The ones that yell out Strava like its then a legitimate right to own the track. Not the riders just out for a ride. The problem is far greater than pre Strava days as there have always been fast riders.

This is a becoming a risk and liability concern as many trails have become race track.

Can the offenders be easily found or is there a degree of privacy possible that would prevent this?

Tubeless tyre pressures - what do you ride?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi All,

I was after a bit of help and advice on tubeless tyre pressure.

I run a 26" dual suspension (5") bike with XT wheels and Nobby Nic's (F&R), I weigh 85-90kgs with gear.

I would say I'm an average rider who rides all of the popular trails on the Northern Beaches, I can do all of the obstacles on the dam and usually ride a sub 40min lap.

I have been experimenting with the pressures but I think I have them too high, something highlighted today by the fact I rode Duck hole, Waratah and Centre Track with my rear tyre pressure at 20Psi!!

Hornsby Quarry Rd Trails

As there is no trail status update (or trail available to update) I thought I'd add one!

Trails at Hornsby are in great condition.

My first time up there and the decent from the car park to the bottom is pretty sweet!

Big thanks to those who build and maintain this track and I'm looking forward to seeing the planned extensions Smiling

Stromlo / Capital Punishment Advice Needed

The only time I have ridden at Stromlo was during last year's Capital Punishment, and I was a bit slow on the final descent. I'll be at Stromlo this weekend but only for about 2 hours... Can anyone give me advice on the best loop to ride to prepare for Capital Punishment 2013? I'm doing the 50km, and as far as I know they haven't announced the route yet. But it's generally my descending skills I want to work on, so any advice on how I can best spend my time there would be welcome.

Mate is looking to get into MTBing.
Cos he's MY mate I get to decide what he rides Sticking out tongue

Ideally looking for a XC type dually, 100-130mm 26", up to $3k, can be 2nd hand, medium, preferably carbon.

I'd normally suggest something like a Giant Trance or Anthem, but they are all 29ers.

Whats good these days?
Thanks.

Garmin Cadence sensor magnets

Some where I have lost the crank magnet for my cadence sensor. Before I order a replacement from Garmin which will cost me around $20. Is there a home job or 3rd party magnet I could try that you know of?

The Grove Bike Park CLOSED down.

Took my boys to the Grove Bike Park at Seaforth the other day to see a sign put up by Manly Council saying it was closed due to vandalism. I can't find out any other information about it on the web. I'm really not sure what that means - you can still just walk in and use it. Has the council just decided to stop funding it? Given it only opened about 18 months ago, it seems like a strange decision.... especially given the distinct lack of any evidence of vandalism.

Can anyone throw some light on that decision? Or suggest who we can push for a better statement than simply 'Its Closed'.

Clean Up Australia Day - St Ives Single Track

Hi,

I'm sure many of you ride the St Ives Single track and will have noticed the incredible amount of rubbish scattered through the bush there - especially at the Wildflower Gardens end.

I'm organising a Clean Up Australia Day site for this area and would be grateful for as much help as we can get. It's a great cause, will benefit us all and the community looking after our beautiful bush land.

Date: Sunday 3rd March from 8am.

Full details available at

http://www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/St+Ives+Si...

Hope to see you along if you can assist (even for an hour).

Economics

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Now that I've been a MTB fan for a few years, I'm trying to figure out how the pro's manage their income. I've been following Jason English & Ed McDonald on Strava. They put in a HUGE number of km's every week. I'm intriged to find out how they manage to get so much training time - money for all the food they must consume! - drive train replacements - general income for living etc.

I'm not asking for exact dollar amounts at all. I'm sure that sponsors & prize money take care of some of the costs.
