Trail link between Westleigh and Hornsby

Trying to work out a riding course between Cherrybrook and Hornsby. Does anyone know if there is a trail link between Warrigal road Westleigh and Valley road Hornsby? Looking at Google Earth it looks like there is a chance between the RFS site at Westleigh, across the back of some houses and out on Valley road

How awesome was today for riding.

I started riding at Bayview at around 6:30am It looked like it was going to start raining any moment. I have no idea how hot it was. But it was extreemly pleasant. For most of the morning nothing changed. overcast not too hot great conditions for going hard. it took me 2 hrs to get to Manly Dam via Centre track St Ives sniggle & the cascades. I did a 82km MTB ride. extreemly happy with my effort. But it didn't start getting really hot until about 12 noon. I wasn't far from home, I look up and the sky was crystal clear. I really enjoued the cooler conditions in the morning.

650b's vs 29er's for shortarses

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I am a little bloke and looking to move to a 5" travel DS bike and have been looking around and researching and have had a few LBS say that I should look at a 650b's instead of 29er's due to my miniature stature any thoughts or are there others of my ilk riding these bikes that may info to give. By the way I am planning on mainly trail rides with larger drop offs with this bike as I have a good hardtail for xc. any help appreciated

Brand advice for seatpost and handlebars

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hey guys

Just looking to change a few things on my bike for a better fit. I need an offset seat post 31.8mm and some riser bars (20mm or less probably) for my Trek Superfly but I have no idea what I'm looking at or what's worth looking at.

So without spending too much what would you recommend as far as brands and product?

Thanks for the help

Garmin 500 lost at wakehurst parkway entry to manly dam

Neutral colour ( silver and black)

I think I dropped it in the parking section at the wakehurst parkway entry to manly dam at 9am this morning.

No sign of it now when I came back to search for it.

Anyone know if I can track it if it ever turns on?

Mixing XT with SLX - Giant Anthem X3 2010

Hi, I have installed an XT Derailer and SLX gears. I am finding the gear changes to be very stiff. I have made a variety of adjustments to the screws with no luck.

Can you mix the components or is the spring in the XT a lot stronger.

Any advice would be great. Hoping to make it easier to shift for my dad (73yrs), who loves Long trail!!

MTBA insurance

Can anyone explain in layman terms what cover is provided by a MTBA licence? In an email lately, they've changed things slightly.

Personally, I already have income protection, death & permanent disability insurance.

Suspension bearing failure

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Anyone seen a full complement bearing do this before?
They were replaced back in May 2012 and have been running fine until I noticed that the seal was protruding. Was it just bad luck that the assembly slots were lined up and the ball worked its way out or are full complement bearings the wrong choice as some people advise?
All the other bearings feel fine, and no misalignment I can see/feel etc.
The last image was taken nack on the 3rd of December prior to rinding the Great North Road. You can see the seal is almost off.

Glenbrook to Emu Plains via Knapsack - tips?

Hi all,

I'm riding The Oaks with some mates on Sunday and plan to start / finish at Emu Plains.

From Glenbrook I'm planning to ride some of the Knapsack trails to link up to the bottom of Mitchells pass. Looking at the maps on NobMob and Google Earth Knapsack does appear to be a bit of a maze.

Can someone familiar with the area give me some guidance; i.e. is it well sign posted, are there any landmarks to look out for to get where I'm trying to go... or should I just throw in the towel and start / finish from Glenbrook?

Thanks in advance for any assistance offered.

Take it easy on the roads - a rant

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Did an easy 50km road ride out to Akuna Bay today. Quite a few cyclists about despite the late hour (left home at 11:30) and the camaraderie was good, with every rider lifting a finger to wave hello or acknowledging you with a nod. Heck, even the roadies were saying hi! Eye-wink

Unfortunately the mood was dampened by the muppet behaviour of *some* drivers. Sadly, it comes as no surprise to see on the news tonight that so far we have 5 dead on our state's roads since Christmas Day (yesterday).

Byron bay

Merry Christmas everyone.

Staying in yamba, north nsw coast and curious to know if there is anything around here to ride. Even around Byron Bay. Anyone been recently. Wevknow there must be some stuff as there are a number of people selling guided rides but we don't want to go with a whole bunch of tourists.

Any advice would be great.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all.
Here's hoping everyone has a safe and enjoyable Xmas season, and that either Santa brought everyone some great gear for their bikes or that you got the opportunity to have a ride before stuffing down Xmas lunch/dinner.
I received a couple of well-needed summer cycling jerseys, but the AyUp riding lights didn't make it in on the sleigh in time.
What did everyone else get for being a good boy/girl?
Cheers,
ChookLegs.....!

garmin/strava problems

My last 4 rides won't upload onto strava and it's only showing my last ride as the 19/12/2012.
My garmin says different and is showing the four rides in its history.
I've tried quite a few times and strava wont pick anything up after the 19th.
I cleared all history a few weeks ago on the Garmin so i know there's no issue with it being full.
Any advice please?
For those that don't know me. I work with wood and computers are the Devils work so none of this Gpx file and tech talk with me please! Eye-wink

2012 - the year that was

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Just noticed on Training Centre that today I ticked over the 5,000 km mark for the year. Well up from an injury-marred last year, slightly up from the year before. Feeling moderately fit and hoping my upcoming busy period at work isn't going to set me back too far.

I only did the one race this year (The Mont), hoping to do a few more in 2013.

Excited about the progress made on trail advocacy and hoping the momentum will continue to build. Who'd have thought last year that we'd get some world-class tracks built in the middle of suburban Hornsby in time for Christmas?

Sealing light tyres that leak from thin sidewalls eg Schwalbe

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Seems a few have had problems keeping racing ralphs and similar (eg. Specialized S-Works Control) inflated when new. Had the same problem followed the standard practice of shaking the wheel so sealant covered the sidewall, so experimented and think may have found a way of doing it simply and quicker that I haven't seen suggested elsewhere. After two days still couldn't get tyre to seal, Put wheel in bath of water to cover the valve and found dozens of small pin pricks in the tyre wall leaking air very slowly.

Bike Hire in Rotorua

Hey Guys,

Can anyone recommend somewhere in Rotorua to hire a decent MTB? Or maybe a guided tour?
I'll be in NZ with the family for a holiday & will only be able to manage a day riding, so I don't really want to haul my bike all over the place.
I like the idea of maybe doing a guided day tour too, since I'll be riding by myself - the family are not very keen & would rather do more touristy stuff.

I've seen http://www.mtbrotorua.co.nz/ & http://www.planetbike.co.nz/ but any advice would be grateful.

Cheers

Final stage of Narrabeen Lagoon Trail under construction - NO ACCESS

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

There has been some new signage put up in the last few weeks about construction commencing by Warringah Council & Cromer Golf Course to complete the final link in the Narrabeen Lagoon Multi-Use Trail loop.

It has always been possible to ride/walk the Narrabeen Lagoon loop through the NSW Sports Academy & Cromer Golf course, but as of 17/12/12, the gates have been locked & new high fencing put up to prevent access. The new signs state that this is due to the area now becoming a construction site, & will not re-open till mid 2014... bugger!
