Derailleur Choice

Shimano XT M786 Shadow+ 10 Speed Rear Mech

or

Shimano XT M781 Shadow 10 Speed Rear Mech

Anyone got the new Shadow+?

If you do, what's your experience with it? Is it worth the extra $20.00?

And while we are at it, can anyone explain what's the difference [performance wise] between a medium and long cage?

Thanks,

Alberto

Trails in the Ulladulla area

I'm off to Ulladulla for 3 or 4 days over the new year and was going to take my bike.

After a bit of searching, I could only find this trail:

http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=...

Does anyone know of any other trails in the area? I'm happy to chuck the bike in the ute and drive for up to an hour if that give me a few more options.

Thanks in advance, Pete.

XX cranks - play

hi,
my bike's developed an annoying creak recently and upon further inspection i noticed a little bit of play in the cranks.
i've taken them off, cleaned and following SRAM instructions, greased them before reinstalling. can't get rid of the play though. (no matter how hard i crank the bolt up)
also, while everything seems to be in the right place i've noticed that there is an almost 5mm gap on the driveside between the crankarm and the BB.
is that the way it's supposed to be?
i'll try to attach some pics.
cheers
S

UST's Burping. Whats the cause?

Test rode a bike awhile back with some ZTR wheels, and Specialised ground control tyres.

Apart from the tyres being extremely sketchy when pumping hard or landing, the biggest thing that killed my ride was air burping out the rear. Happened a few times up Rocky, twice down Mercury when I railed a corner hard, and again when I popped off the end of that log. Both times the tyre collapsed awkwardly and I nearly stacked. Ended up stopping 3 times to pump. All this and I was running more pressure than my XT and Maxxis LUST combo, which have never leaked any air.

My Tiny Sun Sport 2700x

Got a new toy in the mail today to write up.

Initial impressions are it matches the throw of the Ferei BL200, but has the foreground in-fill I was lacking at this year's Mont. The 5.8Ah pack is also good for 2hr45 minutes on high beam and system weight is only 50g mor so more than the BL200. It is more expensive, though.

Full write-up to follow in the next week or so.

I'm planning on getting a seat dropper post. Any recommendations? What have you tried and what do you have to say about it?

Thanks.

What are your thoughts (pros and cons) on a pull shock, like that seen on Scott genius and Cannondale Jekyll?

Sony action cam review

BNA, the site I occasionally write for, will have a review up soon on the new Sony HD Action Cam.

Here is a little bit of footage we shot the other weekend. A side-by-side comparison with the Hero2 will be forthcoming shortly. The riding's nothing spectacular, I am an old fart after all so be gentle Sticking out tongue

I was quite surprised how good the bar-mounted footage was. Best viewed in HD.

That's not a bike shop. THIS is a bike shop.

Following on from Phil Beresford's thread about the Tour Divide, I saw this little piece about where Jay Petervary works.

Not sure how much of it is scripted marketing spin, but the passion and commitment to customer service just seems to ooze out of the staff that speak on the clip in a way that looks to be genuine.

Compare that to the customer service culture that we have to endure here in Australia and the contrast is noticeable.

Manly Dam Maggie/Butcherbird

Hi All,
Am planning to head out to the Dam this evening, and was wondering if the Bugger on King St is still active at the moment?

Haven't ridden Manly in a while, but last time I was out there I saw two people ride past me at the school with bleeding faces!

Cheers!

Help with rear shock choice

Still trying to decide on a replacement rear shock for my Specialized 2009 FSR XC. I found a Fox RP2 that is a XV. What exactly is a XV shock and what difference does it make to the ride over the standard can? I'm also not sure of which tune I need to get for my bike. The one I found is a medium rebound and compression and 175 psi boost valve pressure. Is that suitable? What significance is the boost valve pressure?

Thanks

Heat and tubeless set up

Went to go for a spin on Sunday morn and found that both my tyres had completely deflated??? I run tubeless rims with folding tyres and have never had any real problems before. I pumped them up and all seemed fine though noticed last night that they had deflated again ?? Has anyone had exp with this ? Does the heat effect the sealant in anyway. The bike lives in a brick garage so it get's a bit steamy on hot days but generally doesn't get too hot
Cheers Sam

Fox Shox - DIY or not?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Do you find it's worth servicing your Fox forks and rear shocks yourself, or do you leave it to your bike shop?

I've looked around websites I know from the UK and some I've found here, and it seems to me that Fox have made this as awkward and expensive as possible to promote non user servicing.
