Bike insuarance - certainly worth it

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

About two weeks ago my 2010 Anthem X2 was stolen whilst staying at a caravan park. Luckily I had it insured and after several phone calls I received a cheque today from my insurance company to buy a new bike from my LBS. All in all it was an easy process and I would recommended that if you can insure your bike.

For those interested it was listed as a specified portable item ($13 per month) on my contents policy with QBE.

Travel Advice

Hi everyone,

I am two weeks away from heading over to Rotorua for a week of cycling!

We are curious if anyone has any advice; we are thinking that we should we deflate/empty anything with air in it? Shocks, seat post, tyres, etc.

Would the tyres be ok if we left them seated but with only 15psi or such, to keep them in place and with the stans inside?

Also, CO2 canisters. My guess is not to take any?

Your opinions, facts, etc would be appreciated.

Fast laps of the Dam...start at The Parkway or the Pump station?

Or is there no difference in the end.
I always start at the parkway but was wondering if there's a school of thought about this out there.
Was wondering if having fresh legs for the climb to the Trig point would make it easier for the whole lap.

3 ltr Hydration backpack - feedback on yours

Looking for feedback on 3 ltr hydration packs that will take some extra gear. Already have a 2ltr and a 3ltr Camelbak Classic packs. But need to carry more gear such as a first aid kit, Personal Locator Beacon, food bars, gels and sunscreen. Most other stuff is on the bike. Need 3 ltr as will be riding for 3+ hours in warmish weather. I don't need a cavernous pack that will carry rain jacket, other riding clothes, etc! Just with enough capacity to carry the above and not heavy Smiling.

Calling all commuters | Bridge to Redfern route options

So this morning I headed for Redfern via the Harbour Bridge, having never done this before I decided to take the most direct route along George St. I managed to make it through only 1 set of lights without stopping. Every other set of lights of (which there was more than I think I've ever encountered on a single ride before) caught me out. Is there a better way with fewer lights?

Thanks

Stans ZTR crests advice Pls

Hi Guys

An unusual thing happened to me this last week. I was riding my 29er up Red Hill ( unusual I know!) and I broke a spoke on the rear wheel. I've been running tubeless RR's snakeskins. As the spoke broke, the bottom end of the spoke dropped back into the tyre and inadvertently 'punctured' the wheel. It was a long walk home. The ZTR's don't come with a sealed inner case ( inside the wheel) cos of their weight saving properties.

Any ideas on how to prevent this happening again?

Tanks
Steve

new crank choice

Hi Team

well my raceface cranks are pretty much dead now so it's time for a refresh and I am looking for advice . I am in the fortunate position of being able to get very good discounts on SRAM gear so will lean that way, otherwise XT would have been the no brainier choice.

question : does the X0 crank use a standard 104 bcd chainrings so iI can use my 1x9 setup or is it a propietary setup? it will be a pain if I have to buy a range of new chainrings

thanks in advance

Discarded Tubes Manly Dam

To the individuals discarding their tubes on the trails at Manly Dam today or anywhere, sort your selves out. Surely if you are prepared enough to have spares with you and take the time to replace a flat ! take your rubbish with you. I picked up one at the eightenth hole and one at the playground.
End rant

Stans sealant with CO2 does not mix?

Can't recall where I read it but I'm sure it was here on Nobmob. Someone was saying that its not a good idea to mix Stans sealant with the gas ....
or was it just to inflate a TL ready tyre with CO2. cant recall exactly.

I know CO2 deflates after a while its only really there to get you home or back to transition in a race & then re inflate the tyre with proper air.
but why exactly was it not a god Idea to use CO2 with the Stans's sealant?

I use sealant in my tyres I also use CO2 when I've had a burp or a flat to re-inflate my tyre.

So whats the deal? Laughing out loud

Found in Rotorua - Garmin Edge

A friendly Kiwi just posted this...

Found an old Garmin Edge among the sweet tracks in Rotorua. It seems to belong to a Sydney local male in his 40's who was over for some riding around the end of Oct 2012 and seemed to have made use of the shuttle up the hill. Anyone you know?

I'm from Wellington and was just up there for some riding myself.

Contact him via the Trailflix forums if it's yours.

Oh No ! Need a New Hanger for the Fling

Well what do you know, had a bent hanger and tried last weekend at the LBS to get a replacement. They didnt get back to me and I didnt chase them.

And now I have busted it and need a replacement for the Fling.

I'll do the ring around Sydney shops in the morning but I do not have a good feeling. If anyone knows where I can get one please give me a yell.

It is for an Avanti Competitor 2012 29er. I have the Wheels Hanger #120 and it the same dimensions and looks right but not the correct shape to match the frame dropout.

Schwalbe Nobbly Nic mounted backwards

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I've read on several different forums to mount the NN reverse. This forum included. Was it Hawkeye or Gazza who has mentioned it a few times?

So I thought I'd give it a try.
Most of my riding is around Manly Dam, Cascades, Duckhole & Centre track.

Ooh, bugger!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Was riding home last night via Spit West, and after passing really wide around a bunch of dog-walkers that were scattered all over the marina park shared path, I sat down a bit awkwardly and my seat shifted, tilting backwards.

Bugger. The bolt's come loose. Sad

I ride to the end of the park and lean the bike against a park bench. Out comes the multitool and I loosen the bolt so I can level the seat.

Highland fling ride alternatives

Hi all,
I will be accompanying a friend who in turn is accompanying a friend who is racing at the Fling. I was hoping to be able to ride while we wait for the racing friend to finish, but looking at the course map and not being to familiar with the area I'm not sure if this is possible.
Does anyone know if this is practical? My other option was driving back towards Welby and spending the morning riding the trails there.

Suggestions to alternative riding in the area is much appreciated.

Number (1)13 - upside down??

So, drew number 113 for my next race. What's the convention for mtb races?
I know roadies turn no 13 around, think I've seen a 113 upside down too?
Wouldn't want to get disqualified by some overzealous official...
Thanks

Help to find Stans rimstrips urgent

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

JUst changing to Schwalbe RR/NN snakeskin Tubeless ready after using the old nonTL ones.

I use the standard stans rimstrips. I cannot get them to seat. They inflated, but even at 60psi , just wont pop out and seat.

Some quick checking shows the new TL tyres have a bigger bead, and may not seat with the standard rimstrip. The strop does fit very snuggly under the edge of the rim. Some suggested using the smaller Olympic rim strip.

BUT i need to buy tomorrow Friday in Sydney somewhere. Anyone know a LBS (north/city/east) that carries stans strips??

Titus Rockstar. Any good?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi All
After 6mths owning my first 29er, (a fast ali hard tail ) I'm now looking at stepping up to a full bouncer.
I'm only after the frame as I already have some good wheels, Reba 15mm 120 taper forks, brakes, crank bars & stem so I'm only really after the frame.
I would love a Pivot 429 or Tallboy but the budget isn't there at the moment.

Within my current budget I have recently seen a Turner Sultan frame for $1300 & a Titus Rockstar for $1100.
Any thoughts on these frames for mainly trail riding with the occasion race wearing faster, lighter wheels.

Cheers
T

Grease or loc-tite

Hi,
Opinions wanted.
I just bought a new 10mm QR skewer to replace the old one that got threaded.

Should I put grease or loc-tite or nothing on the threads?

Looking for bike advice and suggestions

Hey guys

New to the forums so first off Hello!

Basically I need some bike advice from more knowledgeable folk. I've caught
the biking bug a while back and mainly rode for fitness (mtb on-road) but I want
to get into off road mountain biking and maybe a bit of trail riding but
still riding for fitness also.

So I kinda need a bit of an all around bike. My budget (stretched) is about $2800
and bare in mind I'm located in Perth so I'm limited to what brands are available
in store.

So far I've looked at the 2013 Specialized Camber Comp
