Which Weekend Away?

Hey All
recently got back from a quick one night trip to the ACT and the KOWEN Forest, had a great time, they've really done some great work down there. It's hard to beat some nice flowing single track accompanied by a Six Foot Kangaroo bounding along not 5 meters away.
BTW the crest motel offer a good cheap bed, with the queanbeyan hotel across the road for a beer and a schnitzel.
So now im looking for ideas, if you were going to go away for a 1 or 2 night adventure where would you go and stay???

Firstly would like to say hello to everyone here being a new member.

The title is pretty self explanatory, I'm in the process of looking for a new bike.

I have been out of the bike scene for a couple of years so not sure whats a good buy these days.

The budget is set at about $2300 for the bike leaving another $200 for some new gear / accessories.

Looking for a DS rig for some trail / endure style riding.

Currently have my eyes on a 2013 Giant Trance 29er X1 as i can pick one of these up for just under $2300.

Manly Dam unauthorised changes - STOP IT!!!!!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

To the f**kwits who keep placing rocks on the a-lines at Manly DAM to dumb it that for ruining my ride today, FUCKING UP MY BIKE, costing me $500, and stopping me riding for the next 2 weeks while I get it fixed. If you can't ride a line get off your bike and walk. Just stop fucking up the trail for those who can ride it.

Riding in Adelaide

I'll be down in Adelaide for a couple of days next month with some friends. We were wondering about renting bikes and riding some dirt one day while we're there. Does anyone have any experience with any of the local MTB parks, eg Eagle Park or Lynton? Are they easy to get to from the CBD? What are the trails like? Can we rent bikes? Any input appreciated.

Bike maintenance tutor wanted

I am looking for someone who can teach me how to fix and diagnose bike maintenance stuff. Eg, gear tuning, replacing cables, maintenance of headset, hubs etc. I have a yeti 575 and a commuter hybrid. Happy to pay standard mechanic rates if suitably qualified. Must be pretty local (I am in Beacon Hill) and available week nights.

What can I expect from the Thredbo Downhill

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I'm heading to the Snowy Mountains this summer with the #1 goal of spending a few days on the Thredbo Downhill. I've watched countless youtube vids but its always hard to tell the severity of the terrain.

1. Comparison - Can anyone provide a comparison of Thredbo vs Manly Dam (Allambie Fire Trail and Water Lab). Steepness of trail, size of the steps/drops, radical changes in speed needed to survive etc?

2. Bike - On the first day I will hire gear, but from then on I plan on riding my Giant Reign 1 .... thoughts?

GoPro Hero3 Ad.

Well... I think this is meant to be an ad, but it's one of the best 'adventure sports' short clips I've ever seen...

What shoes do you wear when riding flats?

Just interested to know if people buy MTB specific shoes or just wear regular trainers, skate shoes whatever?
Cheers

650b has got me thinkin.most of the pros of a 26er and most. of the pros of a 29er but none of the cons of a 29er.interesting.just wandering what would happen if the 29er rider was to put 650b on his bike .how would it handle?better or worse...btw im not a 29er rider or 650b,im still a 26er

Tyre tubes ??

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

OK. Silly question.
I have size 26" 2.1 tyres on my MTB. Schwalbe Rapid Rob & Black Jack.

Do I get tubes size 1.7 - 2.1
or
size 2.1 - 2.6 ???

Apparently the Black Jack tyre is quite large for a 2.1. So I was thinking of getting the 2.1-2.6. But I don't want to get a tube too large.

Is there any benefit of getting one size over the other? Lower tyre pressure?

Thanks for your help.

Hope Pro 2 freehub body

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

So I finally sat down to build up a bike.

Hope Pro 11 hubs with 9mm QR rear. The cassette tool is a tight fit between the inside of the lock ring and the 9mm spacer but does fit in. Do up the cassette lock ring. Wiggle the tool side to side to pull it off and the whole free hub body and cassette comes with it.

My New Ride

You know the deal - get a new ride and you can't help wanting to tell people. Anyway, here's mine for the summer - Giant Anthem X29 3

Changed a few parts over and have it down to 11.2 Kg. Loving the bike so far and posted my fastest lap of the Dam in 3 years on it this week.

Look Out At The Dam

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Finished the Dam today about 11am and some muppet on a motorcross came tearing out from the labs at a good pace.

He went up towards the school and looped back down King St, then headed straight down the exit of the dam, over the small bridge and up the steps / wooden slats (from what I could tell by the sound of the engine).

He didn't stop to see if anyone was coming down and would have done some damage had he collided with anyone.

Manly Hot Lap

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I was out for a ride last night with a mate and we were talking about our declining times around Manly Dam. I still enjoy this as a barometer for my overall bike fitness/technique etc as it encompasses a bit of everything rather than just outright climbing speed and fitness. However over the last 5 years I've never been able to get back to my fastest times - I haven't necessarily been fitter or less fit than in the past - I don't race but ride a lot, so have written it off to getting older (41).
