Do you ride without a Camelbak?

Don't you need to carry more than a single water bottle? What about spares? You don't usually have saddle packs or jerseys with pockets either.

I ride in WA, mostly the Kalamunda Circuit with an extension loop that totals about 43km, so I carry 3 litres of water for the 3 hour'ish ride plus a bottle if its hot. I also carry some spares and tools because walking out wouldn't be much fun.

And yet I see plenty of decent riders on decent bikes blissfully unencumbered, and frankly, it makes me kind of jealous, particularly when you blast past me uphill.

The 1000$ bike thread

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

hi,
have been taking a mate for rides recently (on a borrowed Superlight 29er) and he loves it and wants to really get into riding. I promised to help him find a bike.
The only issue is that he's on a strict budget of a 1000$. He loves the superlight but you'd be struggling to find that with a decent kit under 3k.
I saw that giant are selling anthem 29ers with 2x10 x7/x9 for around 1900$ NEW which I thought was an awesome deal (although I'm not exactly a giant fan) but the budget is still a 1000.

Single speed chain tensioning

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I am planning on building up an old frame I have lying around into a single speed, however with vertical drop outs I will need a chain tensioning device. Is the only way to achieve this through the use of the ones which attach to the hanger or can you use a downhill style chain guide to tension the chain?

(Sorry if this is a stupid question but I have never had a close look at a chain guard)

Frameskin

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Has anyone used Frameskin or some other such product on their frame or fork? Not just the little round cable rub patches, but the long lengths of stuff that go on the top tube, down tube etc?

Is it worth doing?

V Brake Pads

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I need a new set of pads for the tandem, with a total weight just over 200kg what pads do people suggest. The wheels tend to generate a lot of heat on long descents so a soft compound would probably not be adequate.
We managed to melt the glue on the tube patch descending the causeway the other night.

I have read that cool stops are pretty good, which ones?
Others?

ENVE Carbon Wheels

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Really want to get a set of ENVE carbon wheels...

I can deal with the USA price of ~$2,500 a set, but as usual, we get raped in Aus with a thousand odd dollars extra.

I love supporting my LBS (I support 3 regularly), but i just can't justify spending an extra 40%

Problem is, ENVE USA only ship domestic. Does anyone know where I can get a set at a more reasonable price, or do I just have to get someone to ship it from there?

Thanks.

Team mate wanted for Jetblack 24hr 6 man team

Due to a training accident we have lost one of our team (broken arm and a pretty good concussion).
We are a disorganised 6man team looking to have fun - not fast not slow - we will be competitive.
So we are now looking for a replacement for our broken team mate - no prior experience for 24 hr racing required.
Steve.

Suggestions - is it worth selling an infrequently used bike?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I've recently acquired a Trek Rumblefish and absolutely love the handling and the speed of the 29er is awesome. However, this now leaves me with a 29er dually and my 26 dually.

The 26 is a Scott Genius RC10, top end carbon, xtr/x0 components, Ritchey Carbon cockpit, DT Swiss wheels with 240 hubs, 10kg all up - you get the picture. Trouble is, I'm not using it very much and everytime I take it out I Fi d myself thinking 'could have done this quicker on the 9er!'. I've even decided to do my next 100k'er on the rumblefish over the much lighter Scott due to the speed of the bigger wheels.

So who's going? I'd love to get to know some NobMobbers.
I'm doing the 6+6 with one other.....who doesnt really post much on here but he's an ace rider. If I was as good as him. I recon wed have a chance of winning the over 40's catergory.....but as things go I'm just not his caliber. So were in it for some fun, without riding at night & freezing our nuts off at transition in the likes of the Mont & the Scott LOL. were taking the kids too.
I have no Idea how to make myself known as a Nobmobber..... or how to recognize another. Perhaps I should wear one of those celebrety heads signs LOL

Manly Dam volunteer day - 1st Dec

Final one before the xmas slowdown!

We had a few false starts however the Manly Dam rangers have arranged to have some crushed sandstone delivered to the top of the 19th hole lead in. We’re also hoping to get some sandstone flagging delivered this week as well to help armour these badly eroded sections

Plan is to get started around 8am and knock around lunch.... please let me know if you’re up for it?

Meeting point is the end of Roosevelt Ave near the Tennis courts..

Ride more

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi,

I've been lurking here for a while, but haven't yet got involved.

Having done a couple of 100kers this year I'm well and truly hooked on mtbing again. Not just races, but long rides at the mountains, wisemans, few laps a the dam etc

Anyway, I want to ride more, get quicker, train better and enjoy my riding. The problem is that this all takes a lot of time. I've been considering a few options.

Road riding
Indoor training
Quit work and hope it will all be OK with no money
Just go riding all weekend and risk divorce
Night/evening rides
Morning rides

Torpedo7 Camelbak Sale

A mate just brought my attention to a Camelbak sale on at Torpedo7 currently.

I just picked up a Camelbak Mule NV at 50% off - the price of a new bladder at local RRP. Add a FIRSTPURCH2012 coupon code I found and it was post free. Smiling

I run 1x9 (32 up front, whatever-the-range-on-the-rear) and my current setup of a bash ring and an N-gear Jump Stop just isn't cutting the mustard anymore. I'm not sure why because it worked pretty well for a few years.

Money no object, one bike what would YOU choose?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

After a chat today about what we actually ride vs what we'd like bike wise I ask the following Question.
PICK A BIKE, money no object to do everything that you currently do/want to do.

Personally, I'd like an agile trail bike that is fast, comfortable but can handle the odd race & jump.
Poss choices would be a 29er Ti hardtail or mid travel duallie or light allmountain 26er.
Personal perceived choice is a Tallboy 29er or Pivot 429

How about you?

100 milers

Hi guys,
Anyone know of any other 100mile races apart from the fling? Preferably somewhere in driving distance (from Sydney)
I know it's only been 2 weeks since the fling but I'm finding myself in need for a new goal for 2013.
I remember seeing something about a 100mile race on cobra mountain or so, but that seems to have disappeared again.
Cheers

Advice/experiences with Garmin Edge 800?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Thinking of getting a Garmin 800 GPS for Xmas, but got a couple of questions to those that already own them first...

Do you ever lose satellite reception round WA, particularly say down south in the dense forests? Would be using it as my only computer, so don't want it to keep dropping out and not recording my whole ride.

Are they reliable - seen a few formum posts around of problems switching themselves off, s/w glitches, file transfer issues etc. Want to be able to enjoy my ride, not spend half the time fiddling with the GPS!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi All

Im new to the site and looking for few like minded mountain bikers to join on rides.

Ive been keeping to the northern beach mainly since iv been here, but want to explore a few other trails.

Im going to be heading to Ourimbah this Saturday 24/11/12 to check out the trails and was wondering if anyone else is interested in joining me?

Im an experienced rider into xc, dh, trail riding, singletracks, jumping, and everything else you can do on a bike. Fitness level isnt too bad, and I ride up hills where posible. Dont let any of that put you off though.
