Hardtail dead?
Hi all, sorry but I need to get something off of my chest...
I have read several "New Bike" & "New frame" forums recently where hard tail frames have all but been dismissed as a thing of the past, contributors usually say something along the lines of:
"I locked out the back end of my (insert name) duallie the other day & it felt shit, "Why would anyone buy a hard tail bike/frame these days"?
Well, if you think that's really all there is to it then I think that you should borrow a reasonable HT & give it a spin around an XC circuit.
Manly Dam Questions
Just a quick couple of questions.
1. Is Manly Dam open for night riding? If so, do many people ride the Dam at night?
2. Is there any way to extend any other trails around Manly Dam into the ride to get it close to 20km, with minimal road?
Extra spaces opened up for the 2012 Kanangra Classic
After the sell out success of last years Kanangra Classic, we can announce that we will have an extra 300 spots up for grabs in this years event!
Spaces are filling fast, so if you missed out on a spot last year, now is the time to get your entry in.
For those who don't know about this event, the Kanangra Classic is a great weekend of outdoor recreation held in the beautiful Kanangra Boyd National Park. Located just 146km west of Penrith and approx 30 minutes from the Oberon township the Kanangra Boyd National Park is an iconic part of the greater Blue Mountains.
Port Macquaire Mountain Festival CANCELLED
Black Heart events cancels another event. Heard the reason is more lame, than when they cancelled the Bottlebutt the first time. This was a 2 day big event, weathers good, how can it just not happen. Poor attendance?, someone doesn't make money?. Even the council was behind this one.

World 24hr
Is there a way of following this weekends 24hr World Champs?
I'd love to follow it. I'm assuming this WEMBO site is it... although there are no links I can see re: live timing.
RFS / NPWS Hazard Reduction Burns
The NPWS & RFS have a number of Hazard reduction burns planned for this weekend, some starting today.
Following on from the burns during the week and last weekend at Seaforth Oval & The Sydney Academy of Sports on the Wakehurst Parkway they are looking to take advantage of the recent spell of dry weather and run a number of burns. These are scheduled to start tonight at Deep Creek and tomorrow at Wirrenda Creek. These shouldn't affect the usual riding spots, but there may be effects from the smoke.

Hybrid tyres
Hi Guys,
So I'm currenlty commuting on my hardtail (well it's my wife's officially) and the tyres are now shot to bits.
Was thinking of fitting a hybrid slick/knobbly tyre so my missus can ride it on the dirt at weekends while I jump back on my dually.
Any advice appreciated on tyre choice.
Was looking at these.

Anyone used these?

The Right Result
Just a quick update on the results from tonight's Council meeting at Hornsby.
The Old Man's Valley trail complex was approved with all the key sections intact ... unanimously. Congrats to Sydney North Off-Road Cyclists and Trail Care's Dr Simon Kean for their outstanding work with Council to make this happen.
Suggestions for a long-ish training ride this weekend
After the Convict 100 the other weekend I've signed up for the Husky 100 too! I did get a little lower back pain during the convict so had the bike fitted properly today and made a few changes.
So, with half a mind on trying out the new measurements, and half a mind on a good training ride, I'm looking for some local options for sunday arvo. I had thought of just doing 4 laps of the dam, but decided I should be more adventurous. I've done long / perimeter a few times up at Terrey Hills - any suggestions on linking these up with some other tracks up that way to make a 3 ish hour ride??
Stolen Bikes
Hi Guys,
Just a bit of a whinge - I have just had two bikes stolen from my garage in Collaroy - both 2012 white Specialized Epic Expert carbon 29s. The garage was locked and the bikes chained but but had little effect against bolt cutters. Another guy in the building lost a superfly and a giant.
The Specialized are quite distinct bikes (especially the XL) and I have never seen any out around the northern beaches. If you do happen to see them, please let me know.
Cheers

P.S. That's why I always switch Strava / Garmin to 'private' and still lock up my bike securely.
Injury cover
Just wondering, if I badly crash off my bike in the middle of the woods… there are going to be costs on:
– special intervention to drag me out from there
– a long ride in an ambulance / or better, a ride in the helicopter
– some hours in the surgical theatre
– few days of bad food at the hospital
– and lots of physio
What does Medicare take or not in all of this?
If I have a Private Health Ins. (and a basic cover) with like NIB, do they cover this?
I guess Medicare or Private Health Ins. will take a minimum responsibilities.
Giant Anthem 29er or Cannondale RZ120 (2011) for Central Coast NSW
Ok i know there have probably been a gazillion of the same question, but one more can't hurt
I am up for a new bike and i have been trying quite a few 29 ers and 26ers. Unfortunately all on the road so far only
My favourites are the Giant Anthem X1 29er and the RZ120 because of the lefty and nice components.
Light recommendations
I'm looking to buy a decent set of lights so I can start doing some trail work in the dark evenings. Anyone recommend anything decent? Budget around $250-$300 ish?

New springwood resident!
Hi,
I recently moved to Springwood from the city and I am keen to meet up with a few local riders for some casual rides. I've been riding road bikes until last weekend when I purchased a mountain bike but I'm not a complete novice.
Bells on MTB's? How do you warn other trail users?
At the recent Forestville Park PoM info day I was discussing some concerns that local residents had regarding Mountain Bikes on trails. There was an elderly couple who were worried about being collected by a bike on the local trails. They mentioned Cascades, which although a wide fire trail, has them concerned due to the high speed and lack of warning that MTB'ers give. Obviously on the Forestville single trail they couldn't reconcile how they were not going to be in danger when sharing the trial.
Show of Support Critical for Hornsby Mountain Bike Track
Residents are opposing key sections of the mountain bike trail in Old Man's Valley.
This is a reprise of last month's meeting that was cancelled due to the staff report not being completed in time. If you could please show your support by turning up and applauding loudly when the pro-trail speakers address Councillors it will be enormously helpful. Please click to show you are attending.

Yellomundee Repairs Underway
Repairs to the track and surrounding areas at Yellomundee Regional Park (YRP) have kicked off in a big way. This follows the erosion damage caused by the heavy rainfall in Jan-April. On Saturday 12 May 2012, volunteers from WSMTB & BMORC along with NPWS staff and equipment repaired the entrance road areas just off Hawkesbury Rd and into the event carpark. Over 20 tonnes of imported crushed sandstone was used - paid for by WSMTB, and organised by NPWS Ranger Paul Glass. The NPWS bobcat was worked hard all day by Mick Chard (NPWS) - he did a great job.
