Chainrings
Hi
I'm about to replace the drive train on my bike and was wondering if I need to change the front chainrings as a set or if I can get away with just the middle ring? The inner and outer are in pretty good condition.
If I don't replace them as a set do I have to use the same brand as they are, or are all brands compatable? Any advice on brand would be welcome, They are going to be bolted to a set of Raceface Evolve cranks on my Reign that gets most of it's use at Red Hill, Terrry Hills with the odd xc at Orimbah and 100k enduro. Not sure if that makes any differance.
Thanks
Trev
Shock pump needed! Sunday at Awaba.
I wanted to let a 'little' air out of my rear shock, and I let out too much. Not happy.
I don't have a shock pump. I'm super keen for a trip to Awaba tomorrow morning (Sunday morning). Anybody going? Can someone please bring their pump?
See 'rides' for more details. I'm keen to do around 50km or more. Reply to this message if you can help me out! Thanks. - Chris.

Chinese Bike Courier
Sydney bike couriers complain if you give them more than a couple of envelopes to deliver.
Check what this guy was carrying in Shanghai when we were there recently.
Not sure, but he had probably already done a few deliveries for the day.
Race stories?
So, I was one my last timed run of the day, speeding towards a blind corner, I get through the corner, suddenly, in front of me there's a herd of goats just standing there watching me, right in the middle of the single track! But it was okay, after a fair bit of yelling the goats scampered off into the bush...
this got me thinking though, strange things in the middle of a race, like goats in the middle of single track, must happen to everyone.
What's your story?
Cheers!
I just came home with a brand new Trance x2 (they were out of x3's in my size), and I absolutely love it!
Just wanted to thank all those that gave me advice in my previous thread
cheers!

Noobs first MTB choice...any comments?
G`day all,
Im new to mountain biking and am currently bashing my hybrid bike up riding at red hill.
Im looking to but a new biking soley for the mud and this is what i am thinking about purchasing.
I have found a shop that will sell me this new for $900.00.
any comments?
Spec is as follows:
Manufacturer Merida
Model Matts TFS Trail 700-D
Frame size 15", 17", 19"
Frame MATTS TFS-Trail-Disc
Colour silk matt black (mango)
Fork SR Raidon RL Air 120
Front derailleur Shimano Deore
Rear derailleur Deore XT
Brake levers attached
1x9 using triple crank
I want to set up my steel hard tail (currently a pretty frame on the wall in the spare room) as a 1 x 9
I have an old set of RF Evolve cranks in the spart parts bin - I want to leave the middle ring on the crank spider, remove the big and small rings, remove the front mech and operate as a 1 x 9,
Given a reasonable chain line with the cassette, I can't see any issues with the above - will I need to get a specific chain ring? I can see advantages to getting a thicker middle ring without ramps and pins to increase longevity.
I may also need to get narrower chainring bolts.

I stumbled across this website yesterday and thought I'd share.

There's also a great article on the first modern racing derailleur from Campagnello

Brake Upgrade
I'm looking to upgrade the Juicy 3's on my XTC 29'er. They are useless! I've decided on getting some Elixer R's. The current brakes are running 160 rotors. Should I be upgrading to 185's or will the new brakes be fine on 160's?
brake leaking
topped up the resovior on my hydralic brakes- mrb525 shimano and when i hit the brakes i have oil leaking out of the resovior. it said to fill to top in shimano tech docs- any idea why it does this or how to fix it?
New or used?
I was wondering if someone had any opinions or experience in regards to buying a bike new or used.
First question: Should I even consider buying a used bike?
Second question: If I choose to look for a used bike, what to look out for and how to check that it is in a decent condition?
At the moment I'm considering a hardtail 29er. Been mainly looking at the Gary Fishers and the Giant XtC
Unknown Track at Ingleside?
Hey Guys,
I've been doing some desktop exploring & came across this firetrail in Google Earth that doesn't appear to be listed on the site.
http://maps.google.com.au/?ie=UTF8&ll=-33.690281...
It appears to be a simple out & back firetrail about 2km long through some National Park, that follows the ridgeline to a point overlooking Deep Creek.
Has anybody ever ridden this trail, that can provide some info about whether its any fun?
It looks like it probably runs mostly downhill, so the return ride might be bit of a granny-gear slog.
Oaks trail night ride
Hi All,
I did a night ride a few months ago with a group on the Oaks trail and thought that i might organise one for the folks here. I find it a much more interesting trail at night time, but chilli at the moment.
I thought I would plan this in advance for a late August or early September.

Holy Kaw! Yeti's cheaper than Giants! 575 < $ 4K
TBSM (The Bike Shed Mortdale) has 2010 Yeti 575's for $3,995 (40% off)...that seems an incredible price for a locally bought Yeti with full warranty...

A nice surprise in the mail
Got home after a very ordinary day at work, and look what was waiting for me
'Tis a Spot Rocker 29er belt drive single-speed. First time for me on both a 29er and a singlespeed.
The weather looks promising for the weekend, although unfortunately the Dam is probably still going to be too wet. Once I've had a couple of rides by myself to get used to the thing, I'll probably organise a Show and Tell ride for those who might be interested.
No Trains Running on Blue Mountains Line This Weekend
Just a quick update for anyone looking at riding the train up for an an Oaks run etc. A good weekend to ride up & back! There will be buses only between Lithgow & Blacktown.

Trance x3 review?
Hi everybody,
I'm thinking of buying a Trance x3... I'll be using it for Manly Dam and the likes (maybe occasionally a bit of downhill), but i was wondering if anyone here has any previous experience with the x3 or any of the other bikes in the trance series, any advice or opinions would be greatly appreaciated.
Cheers, Boulder
