buying a bike from the states

hey folks anyone here bought a new (or secondhand)bike from the us?if so how much does customs sting you for when it arrives?i had something particular in mind and found it on ebay at a very good price, but am wondering if the import tax slugs you hard enough to make it not really worth it.I joined the my us site that gives you an adress in the states as alot of the bike shops over there wont post internationally.just dont know what happens at this end if they fleece you.....

Lights - Lupine?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

A topic covered a thousand times before, I’m sure, so apologies.

I am looking at purchasing lights, both for commuting and off road. To date I have been using the Exposure lighting system ($600 +) which I have had all sorts of troubles with (eg, chargers faulty, lights not even water resistant let alone water proof, main light has stopped working altogether and now the helmet light is on the blink). Needless to say, I won’t be purchasing Exposure lights.

Whakarewarewa Forest Update (2009)

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hello NSW!

There's more evidence of how solid MTB facilities are of benefit to the economy and community in this document from New Zealand (Whakarewarewa Forest is in Rotorua in case you didn't know):

http://aprconsultants.co.nz/index.php/download_f...

One would expect that having just emerged from an economic recession, that discretionary consumer spending on recreational activities would have declined. While this may be true in many areas, use of “God's Playground” being Whakarewarewa Forest has increased.

Travel Insurance / Bike Insurance

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

my partner and I are about to head off on a 5 week road trip through US/Canada and are taking our bikes.
I'm researching the best option of travel insurance /bike insurance for the trip.

i wanted to get others advice/experience on what they have found to be the best value for money, value being good coverage when they have taken their bikes OS.

FYI - i have contacted my home content insurance provider as we currently have our bikes insured with them a portable items and they will cover the bikes overseas for a max of $10k for all bikes (value of our bikes will be $11k).

Northern Beaches Commuting

Hi all - sorry this is probably slightly off-topic but I'm considering moving to the Northern Beaches, specifically Allambie or Allambie Heights and interested in your experiences of commuting to the city by bike and by bus (I hope to do both) or other means? How do people do it (routes etc) and how long does it take?

Fox Flux strap re-direction

Anyone who has a Fox Flux helmet may find this useful
I've had one for about 6 months and came upon this rotorfark thread resurrection from last year

Apparently, due to some copyright thing
Fox didn't put their helmet strapping through the guides as it was designed

Anyway, it's hard to explain (see thread for details)
But if you haven't done yours
It will feel and fit so much better when you do

Found - Front Wheel - Manly Dam 25/7

I picked up a front wheel that was left behind at Manly Dam today around 11:45.

Thought I should take it instead of the walkers who were looking at it.

Mountain Bike Trail for Western Sydney Regional Park

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I emailed Western Sydney Regional Park last week, suggesting an xc competition track would be a good idea. They supplied me with contact details of the director of the Western Sydney Parklands trust, and indicated that a proposal for an mtb track would be considered in terms of the "forward capital works plan".

Six thousand matching black, silver and blue bicycles are about to hit the streets of London as the city joins others around the world in launching a public bike sharing scheme.

I wonder whether anything like this could ever work in Sydney?

Chains suck, Chain suck.

When my chain gets muddy it suffers chain suck really bad. I wanna throw my bike into the bush (nearly did on saturday).
Is it an old chain thats stretched, middle cog too old or an inherent problem in mud, The drivetrain was changed at the same time a few months ago, please HEELLPP , this drives me NUTS....!!!!

Singlespeed?

Looks like I might be getting a singlespeed 29er to play with for a few weeks - having never ridden a 29er nor a singlespeeder previously.

29ers I can get my head around, but I'm wondering what folks who've ride singlespeeders - and enjoy them - find that they do for their riding.

I'm quite looking forward to it if it comes off - although I can't see myself making it up Hearbreak Hill or Quarry Climb without getting off and pushing! Laughing out loud
