Riding after rain screws the trails

Just a little example of what riding during and after rain does to the trails. I have attached 2 pics. The 1st is a shot of a section of trail that has seen heavy usage after recent rain. It is a pretty lazy corner that has seen heeeaaappss of riders through. It is very rutted and blown out now. It will need a good half day of rock armoring to survive the long haul.

the 2nd pic is taken of a very similar corner. It is on a section of trail that isn't seeing much traffic as a result of the works on the sewage plant. There is evidence of 2 bikes going through.

New gate at Ralston and Elm...

Just back from a night ride and saw this new gate - almost invisible at night!

There is a gap on the right to get in but no signs or info.

I guess they are trying to keep out the MX bikes and stop the dumping along near the EA substation.

I usually ride through here to get to Cascades.

Anyone know any more info on this?

Mavic freehub issue?

Had an interesting experience scooting down Duck Holes today. There was this huge buzzing noise like i had a stick or leaf or something caught in my back suspension and it was rubbing on the tyre, so I stopped to pull offending item out. Nothing there. Happened a few more times, including one time when I couldn't hear it due to wind noise, but could feel it through the frame.

2 creeks?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I went for a bit of an exploring ride early this morning and i think i started at the otherside of the two creeks track. very interesting ride. There was about 5km's of fire trail until it turned into single track at which that point i turned home (no time). Ive put the ride u on google maps but just wondering if it does connect up to 2 creeks and rosevill and if not where? Funnily enough thinking none went there i ran into a person on a rush, and some hardtail doing the exact same thing i was.

Folding versus wired / non-folding tyres

I'm looking to replace my rear tyre - am keen on the Kenda Small block eights. Could someone provide advice on the pros and cons of wired vs folding tyres? The price difference is significant.

Thanks

MTB Training (What is the best approach)

I'm keen to increase my average speed but not sure on the approach.

If I want to ride 40km @ 20km per hr (Cascades/Terry Hills)
- Do I ride 20km (ave) for 30min and then increase by increments to 2hrs OR
- Do I ride the entire 40km over and over and then maybe I hit 20km/hr

Also what Cadence should I aim for, is average 80 enough and how is average cadence calculated (Garmin 705) when you are going downhill (not pedaling)

Social ride Dungog Common on Sunday 9.30

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

A reminder that Hunter Mountain Bike Club are welcome to join a social ride on Dungog Common this Sunday.

Although there has been lots of rain recently, Dungog area was dry and warm today. It should be good riding Sunday. The Common has some great single track trails and the local Pedalfest team have been working hard to improve the area for mountain bike riding.

I hope a few can support the event!

Trail for 7 year old?

Beyond Terrey Hills and the local BMX track (which may be too wet), anyone have any suggestions for kid friendly trails/tracks for 7 year old ? Does Ourimbah have anything like this?

What's going on?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I feel quite bad for anyone just getting into MTB over the last couple of months and who may have come here looking for riding advice or buddies. Our rides calendar has been mainly devoid of local riding lately due to the rain and there are too many red lights on the trail status page.

Is it that we've become a little softer than in the past and the weather is forcing everyone off the trails? Is this the wettest winter for years? The BOM's recent Sydney statement says not really (wettest June since 2007). Is it that riders are becoming more aware of the effects riding in the wet has on their bikes and on the trails? It's probably a combination of all that. I for one am really looking forward to Spring - anyone hear me? Eye-wink

Away from the Northern Beaches there was some good racing down at the Three Ring Circus on Sunday with a couple of riders getting on the podium. Congratulations to Antsonline and Steve 01 and all the other riders who made this a great event by the sounds of it.

Carbon Hardtails....

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

What are people's thoughts on a carbon hardtail (e.g Scott Scale 20/30) as a second bike for use in races, flat trails ?

I currently have a dual suspension which serves me well today but thinking of a much lighter second bike for use round the Dam, Ourimbah and events such as Dirtworks, Highland Fling etc.

For those of you who have both a dualie and hardtail what would you use around the above tracks ?

gear choice and pedaling technique?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

with regards to beanie's post about 1 x 9, i'm getting a little confused with which is the best gear to be getting more speed with i've only recently started using the big ring, because after sitting in middle ring and smallest cog after a while there's less resistance and i seem to spin the legs and feel no gain, so then switch to big ring and get a, or what seems like a slower rotation but more resistance to work against and then the other scenario is getting half way up the hill and then struggling to keep pedaling momentum by making a too complicated gear change half way up, so was just wo

2013 24hr titles in QLD?

One of the things the tailwind people said during the presentation for the Merida 24hr event was that they were the first to bid for this years 24hr worlds. They winged about the event going to canberra because it was the better known site and said they have been told they would get the event next time it came to Australia.

Dedicam

This will potentially open the action sports cinematography right up to anyone as its certainly a load cheaper than a heli, and could fly much closer to a rider.

Why go for only 1 front ring?

Why would you choose to go for only one front ring and what are the benefits of this? What size would you choose?

My middle ring is really worn out and I need to replace it as I'm 'spinning' all the time when I put slight pressure on the pedals while on the middle ring. I'm planning to get a new bike soon so don't want to use to much $$ on the old one. The old one, a GF Marlin will be converted to a commuter bike when I get a new MTB.

Thanks for advise and input!
