Alternative to NPWS tracks? Steve Peat in Lisboa downtown videos
Steve Peat just won the 2008 Lisboa (Portugal) Downtown championship...
As the NPWS rangers get ever more concerned about our safety and trail erosion, maybe we should look at alternatives in the urban environment...look at these vids from the historic city of Lisboa...MTB must be popular there!

even the mayor of Lisboa gave the track a try (interesting results)

NoBMoB Represent NSW State Series Wagga Wagga round 2
Once again NoBMoB (sponsored???) riders featured in the podium at last weekends state champs held out west at Wagga. The track out there is such a pleasure to ride that the race was almost over to fast, the track had a nice tight singletrack climb up to the fireroad to start which put us on to a SWEET bit of downhill singletrack. the track climbed back to the highest point then a good 2km worth flowing (mostly)downhill singletrack took back to the Start/Finish line.
I will be going back there at some stage im sure of that!!!
Anyways Results are as follows:

Advice please: Best Replacement Disc Pads for Shimano LX/XTR?
Hi Guys,
My rear brakes were misbehavin' on the weekend through the Southern Sojourn section of the Dam, and it turns out I need to replace the pads. They were making a racket and not providing a lot of power - the only time they locked was on the boards with a death grip on the lever. Replacing the fluid and giving the pads a clean with some brake cleaner and a rag stopped the noise, but the power has only marginally improved - still can't lock 'em on the road.
What do you guys reckon are the best options for replacement pads? They're Shimano LX brakes.

AYUP small parts order
Hey I am ordering some mounts from AYUP. Anyone need any bits and pieces?
This is not going to be a large group buy of lightsets....unless someone else wants to organise.
Let me know by Monday.

Whistler Bike Park Opened Yesterday!
Wow, I just read this:
http://www.singletracks.com/blog/?p=860
...which is pretty incredible given that the average snow depth is still more than 35 inches on the mountain.
... turns out the trails at Whistler are being cleared using machines and snow shovels - hard work no doubt, especially on the steeper pitches. I’m guessing the trails will stay pretty soggy through the next few months as the piles of snow melt but hey - they’re biking in May!

CRC order
I'll be placing a Chain reaction order about Wednesday or Thursday next week. I only need (can afford) about $200 worth of drivetrain stuff. They have some good specials at the moment.
Anybody interested in getting the order past $600 for free delivery?
PM or post if interested

Red Carbon?
So... I was in CBD this arvo and they had some red carbon bling on sale. Just couldn't help myself and snapped it up.
Q: So what, do you suppose it was?

Anyone have an old Road Derailleur sitting around unused?
I need a tensioner for my trials bike build and something like that would be ideal. As long as it's not too heavy and aint broke I'd be willing to part with a few bucks or swap some parts.
PM me details if you have, I'd be keen to pick-up on Saturday if possible.
Ta,
Matt.

No Signs = Use the Internet
So your riding along a fire trail at sub 15 kms hour (so your not risking $300 fine) or driving your car at sub 60 kms hour (unless it is 8:00am-9:30am or 2:30pm-4:00pm Monday to Friday and not shcool holidays or teacher strike and your heading North in a little white car.. risking $318 dollar fine when they can afford to change the line marking colour to make it more obvious you passed 'another' shitty little road sign) on the roller-coaster of Comenarrah Park Way and you have to give berth to a big black Alsation. Maybe you just need to siphon the python...

Fox Forks Sale!!!
For those who are looking for new bling forks, Jenson USA is having a 2008 FOX Forks sale. Some have good prices, others not, but it is worth a look.

PS: It's May and 2009 stuff is already coming!!!

Warringah Council market research call
I just got a call from a market research company doing research on behalf of Warringah Council regarding sporting facilities in the area. I wanted to mention it to everyone cause it's an opportunity to help get the message across to the councils about our trail riding needs. I would usually hang up on these calls but this one is worth doing to push the cause.

Seems to me that we need to get the law and PoM amended
NPWS are only able to control mountain bike access to trails and speeds within national parks because they fall into the definition of a "vehicle" under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 i.e. vehicle includes:
(a) a boat or other object that, while floating on water or submerged, whether wholly or partly, under water, is wholly or partly used for the conveyance of persons or things,
(b) an apparatus that, while propelled, or directed or controlled, in the air by human or mechanical power or by the wind, is wholly or partly used for the conveyance of persons or things,

But They Are Illegal!
In response to a number of comments on here about riding single track in National Parks.
Yes, we all know NOW that riding single track in National Parks is illegal. Actually, I think this was first drawn to my attention a while back when Alchemist mentioned the riding at Bantry Bay. There didn't used to be signs at Bantry Bay (nor Oxford Falls for that matter) so I didn't even know this was National Park, let alone the rule about single track.

Oaks
Has anyone been to Oaks recently? I’m thinking of doing Andersons and Oaks or Oaks up & down this Sunday (training pace) and given the recent posts about it I wonder if it is rideable.
Anyone care to join (Probably the 8:20 train from Glenbrook)?
Cheers,
Leo.

Signs
I think if NPWS had their way every park would be fenced off and we would look at them from elevated walk ways.
Make the trails sustainable, don't sign post them. People are willing to help make them more sustainable.
It should be about making the trail "sustainable" to users, not removing the users. Do they really think the population and usage is going to drop. The highest increase in unstructured recreation in Hornsby Shire parks has been walkers, followed by Bike Riders. It is increasing and people don't really care that much about signs. Signage does not work.

NPWS Protest
The Australian Horse Alliance are one group we need to talk to as they seem to have been fighting this good fight longer then us.
I searched the NPWS site last night using the "keyword" [Mountain Bike trails] and can you believe a "0" result to my search even though the Royal National Park has "Official" mountain bike trails.

Wingello
I am thining of heading down to Wingello later in the week for a ride - I have heard it is a nice part of the world.
Do you have any advice? What is it like? What can I expect?
Cheers.

Saturday Lake Parra?
Calling Kurt, Noel, or anyone else that could play Tour Barbie at Lake Parra on Saturday.
I was interested in checking out Lake Parramatta, possibly in the mid-morning. But any time is fine by me. I could go by myself, but I thought it better to get a local with a bit of trail experience. Would we go for some of the more technical trails? That would be my preference.
And given the hubbub with the northern beaches at the moment, it is also a great opportunity to broaden one's horizons. Who else may be interested?
Can anyone help a brother out?

Appin WWS
I'm looking for 1 or 2 people to join us in a 3 or 4 person team. We are not going to win but will have a good time. The Appin round is on Sunday, 25/5/08. We will camp over on Saturday, but you can arrive on the morning if you prefer.

Ride this Saturday 17th
Anyone interested in a ride this Saturday morning?, i'm getting sick of the solo.
Training for the Angry Doctor, Fling, Mont & Scott

Sam Hill Maribor
Hope this works, could get it to embed properly so follow the link.
It's Sam Hills winning run from Maribor. He won by 3 seconds. 2nd to 8th was separated by 2 seconds. 3rd to 8th 0.7 seconds. The boy is a freak and dangerously averaged close to 54km/hr.
The lineside line he takes through the rock garden at the top and then the next corner is insane.
Commentary is a crack up with Cedric Gracia.

Ourimbah State Forest - Sun 18th May
Anyone up for some Angry Doctor Training at Ourimbha this Sunday? Thinking of going up and getting around 30 kays in, perhaps more. I'll stick a entry in the calender if anyone's keen.
