Cyclinic

After having a SHITE day yesterday ( http://nobmob.com/node/1426#comment-2770 ) I had a REALLY GRRRREAT day today.
Cyclinic with Paul Rowney and Rob Eva, really cool. Too tired to write too much now, but, I can only recommend it. Well worth the money, and the blokes are really nice.

And i did it on my girlfriends 16kg old bike. Drift awaaaaaaaay!

Narrabeen Lake circuit / Deep Creek singletrack, 7:00am Tuesdays

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Where: Jamieson Park, Narrabeen.
When: 7:00am start, Tuesday mornings
What: Loop ride, more or less following the water's edge, approx 1 hour.
Out-and-back singletrack option at Deep Creek, adds about another half hour.

Terrain:
Main circuit: mostly flat hardpack, some road along the Parkway. Bring the cyclocross bike if you're into that sort of thing.
Deep Creek singletrack: some hardpack, some loose soil. Tight and twisty, a few ramps over fallen trees - the way singletrack should be.

Nothing that could be called a hill either - it's pretty flat for the entire ride.

road rides...

Hello,
Would any of you know of a group like NobMob who organise friendly road riding? I have a couple of friends who want to take it up and have asked me where to go - I know nothing about it... one knows what he is doing and the other is a newbie - they both live on the Northern Beaches...
Thank you!

Red Hill - Saturday afternoon - 4:00 p.m.

Hi all,

I am planning a ride around Red Hill (the main loop) on Saturday afternoon. Can't go in the morning as I have some bike maintenance to perform. A new rear tyre! Weather is not supposed to be too hot.

If anyone is interested, please post your involvement. Meet at the dirt clearing at the gate on Lady Penrhyn Drive.

Cheers,

Liam.

GPS Advice

Hi All,

I am considering the Garmin Edge 305 as the main use is for the bike and I like motionbased.com, google mapping etc

Wondering how suitable this device is or what alternatives there are for other uses:

Running?
Sailing? or sync to laptop for coastal/inshore navigation etc
Basemap with display?

Is there a device that does it all?

Cheers Daz.

Heath Track Cascades

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Committing the google map of this trail from nobmob to memory (hah), I set off to find the single track and downhill technical near the Ralston Rd entrance.

At the top of the heath track, between it and the single track on google there is a nice downhill that has a few trails funneling into one trail that heads down the valley off a long rock shelf. A lot of work (a little too much) has gone into this trail with pallets etc down some drop-offs. At the bottom of the last drop-off, the trail suddenly ends. There a a few very overgrown trails that continue along near the creek bed but I thought they may have been animal trails and so didn't venture too far.

Great North Road Saturday 21st April (start time and direction to be confirmed)

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

i know this is a while away but thought i would get in early. The dirtworks 100 will be on a few weeks after this date so thought it may be a good time to check the area out. I have never been there before so would be good to have someone come along who has been before or someone with a decent map. I propose starting at wisemans then crossing the ferry, turn left and into the great northern rd this way, then do a loop which will maybe equal 60-70kms, i think there is a loop that goes near wrights creek ( i think i read somewhere) and comes back via st albans. I am guessing though so if anybody can help out with a proposed route that would be great. This will be a cruisy ride mainly to check the trails out and there condition, start maybe 8am, back to car by 4pm at latest. What do you think?

Recomended tyre pressure?

Just wondering what amount of pressure other people put into their tyres.

Do you have the same pressure for all types of terrain, or do you vary depending on terrain, conditions etc?
And if you run the same pressure for different tyres or different pressure for different tyres?

I've currently got my Maxxis tyres at around 40psi.

My road tyres I like to be rock hard.

Air filters

These used to be pretty popular for couriers riding round London IIRC. The sort you wear over your mouth to protect your precious lungs.

I haven't seen them about over here, anyone use them? Anyone know whether they're any good or just pointless?

Following buses isn't much fun in the fragrance and possibly health department...

British Rider in Manly - desperate for some trails

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi guys,

Firstly, a big hello to everybody on this forum!

Ok, here's the scope. Been in Manly about four hours (been drinking and my head hurts!), spent 24 hours flying over here, and led to believe that I'd be able to roll out of my front door and hit some trails. Since found out this is not the case. I don't drive and all I've got in my arsenal is a seven inch freeride bike. I'll ride most things jump or downhill related, and have been known to pedal occasionally. So if anybody knows of anything I can keep myself busy with whilst I'm here (six weeks in total) I'll be much more than appreciative.

Thursday night ride somewhere else...

Controversial I know but I'm a little over Terry Hills... and so can I suggest a Thursday night ride at Manly Dam, say 7.30 for a couple of laps (though feel free to just do one). Usual meeting spot parking at the Hydraulics labs down the hill from the School.

Post if you're coming please.

Ta,
Matt.

Port 12 hr enduro

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

For those who are interested, a tribe of us has returned form a successful venture to the Port 12 hr enduro. What an amazing event, we definetly have some goals to achieve now. An absolutley perfect track with everything in it. 8+ ks long but realistically rideable by any standard. We will be planning a day trip sometime in the future, will keep you posted on that one. Results are up at http://12hr.hvmtbr.com/

The 4 boys from Rainbow Cycles did a four man team and smashed it. If they didn't break a chain, which reflected in their lap 9 split time of 36+ minutes, they would have won their division. Rowan from Bob Wallis had some painfull night issues but after a nice 2hr+ nap, woke up firing and raced solidly to finish high in the solo placing's of 8th overall. Terry Bernut from Corindi, had a great start before snapping a hanger and unfortunately couldn't find a spare anywhere. My brother, Michael Hawke, started his second ever race in the solo division on a loan bike which he had never ridden before and rode in hiking boots before he hit the pre-dawn wall and like Rowan had a nice little sleep. Like Rowan he awoke with flair and gusto and punched out some nice laps. He tired around smoko and decided to share his bike with Terry so they could both post a finish time and enjoy the awesome track.

Endurance Nutrition

Just following up from here...

My profile for last year's Dirtworks is here:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/episode/730947

The HR graph tells the story... during the first few hours was able to keep the HR up and was doing OK-ish. Towards the end (the last 40%?) though, it dips quiet a lot. Notice I had a sprint finish, oh, the legs loved that Eye-wink

Anyhow - I was eating from the off. Powerbars (think I had 3 or 4), peanut butter & honey sangers (2 rounds) & Gu. Think I only had a 2 or 3 Gu.

Given a Powerbar is 236cal, Gu less than half of that, that's only 1416cal plus the sangers at best estimate (plus whatever energy was in 3-4 scoops of Enduro - 90cal each). Clearly this was woefully inadequate.

Oaks Fire Trail 17th March

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi Everyone,

A few of us are going to do the Oaks trail (Yes I heard you groan Liam) This time it will be with a twist. Don has agreed to lead us on the ride with his GPS to set the pace.

We aim to start at the top of the track at the gate at Woodford and finish at the top of the hill at the entrance to the park (Don? was that the end point we decided on?) after the weir at the bottom of the stairs in 1 hour 23min.

In order to keep it simple and fun. Don will set the pace and we (most likely me) will play the sweeper at the back of the back. It will be this person's duty not to leave anyone behind and to help if they have an equipment failure or just ride back with them.

Sat 10 Mar - Distance Training

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hmmmm... yesterday was hard. Hot and humid and only 33Ks in around 3 hours of riding. Although it had over 1000m of vertical I was disappointed at how tired I was feeling.

Time to get serious about doing some distance for the DW!

Where: Ryland Meeting point, Mona Vale Road (there's a dirt area with plenty of parking).
When: Saturday 10 March. 7:30am (I know some will want earlier, and some later so this is nice compromise).
What: Bit of distance and climbing (there will be some nasty hills) training:

Elete Hydration

Hi everyone!

Question:

Has anyone heard of the product "Elete". It is an electrolyte add in either in from of salt water drops or tablets. It is an awesome product cause it is really ONLY electrolytes (Mg, Cl, Na, and K) no sugar, flavour or anything.

Unfortunately I can't find it anywhere in my area anymore. I rang most of the bike shops I know but nobody knows or sells it. I can order it over the net but heaps more expensive, so I thought maybe one of you has heard about it or knows a shop that sells it? That'd be great!

Cheers
Caro
