To bring my bike or buy?

Heading to BC Canada for 5 weeks riding in July/Aug. Was planning to bring my bike but someone suggested I could buy a new bike over there for much less than here - ride it - bring it back to Oz and sell it for more than I'd pay.

Has anyone done this? Is it true? Any advice? Could you recommend any LBS in Vancouver or Whistler that sells Norco?

Any info much appreciated

XCO Series

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Is there or is there not going to be a NSW XCO series or just a championship event? Looks like the calendar is just about full, what with enduros and club xco rounds. Will state series now die forever?

Cycling Fitness

What are some good exercises to keep fit for cycling other than the obvious running? Thinking some sprinting, squats, squat jumps.

I’m going on holidays and can’t take the bike but want to keep my fitness up for the DW 50.

Knock off Shimano chains?

Anyone ever heard of counterfeit Shimano chains? I bought a CNHG73 from eBay and it looks very questionable: the stampings and riveting are far less perfect than they normally are for Shimano. It measures up OK, and is definitely a new bicycle chain (unfortunately the wrong bloody size: they mailed me an 8 speed...), but the attention to detail suggests a fake. Surely no one would bother?

I'll try and post an image if anyone's interested.

It was bloody cheap, by the way. Still, I think I might stick to T7 in future.

Hi all,

Well after an unfortunate events on the weekend, and a very lucky outcome to my bike falling of a mates bike rack on the M4. I think being midnight and not much traffic played a part in my bike being relatively in one piece.

(Bike is 2009 stump jumper elite)
The problem, i am in the Mont on Saturday/Sunday and I am in need of some replacement parts for my bike. I was hoping to get these alot cheaper but i am strapped for time so I will be going thru the local bike shop.

Maxxis "exception" series

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I am wondering what the deal is with the Maxxis "exception" series compared to the standard "XC". I appreciate that the exception series is recommended for racing and it has something to do with the compounds used in the rubber to make them faster and thus better for racing but am unsure what this actually means to me. Are the "exception" series simply faster but the trade off is a less durable tyre or are they as durable and faster but you pay more for that?

Top Bike TV

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I stumbled across this TV program called Top Bike TV the other day, and what do you know, it's all about bikes. More importantly cycling in Aus.

It's on TVS and has a pretty budget feel to it, but it's quite fun. Lots of road stuff but some MTB as well. They generally have a roller race at the end which is a fun, and it seems every week they have some mad adventure somewhere. They seem to be based in VIC from what I can tell (could be wildly wrong there) but get all over the place.

Want to ride ourimbah tomorrow but there's a race...

I know I'm asking this really late but I only just found out. There's a ccomtb race at ourimbah tomorrow but we'd planned to go for a training ride. Can anyone tell me what the etiquette is on this? Can we still ride there? Obviously we'd get outta the way!
Cheers.

New bike here we go

have just ordered an 2009 Ironhorse bootleg 2.0 in the hope that it will bring my times down well below the times im doing currently on my 2006 Norco six one ( 42 min dam laps ) so that I will be able to enter in some races socially before too long and be somewhat competitive so that the next event doesnt need to wait for me to finish before starting.

Hi Everyone,

I'm lucky to be part of a campaign to change the lives of indigenous Australians through positive action to provide real jobs and training across the country. The initiative is financially backed by Andrew Forrest, Kerry Stokes and James Packer and we launched the campaign last night at Sydney Opera House.

Dirtworks on a Single Speed

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

So I'm doing the 50km rather than the 100km due to an ITB injury that I'm treating at the moment, and was going to use my FS bike, but am keen to do Single Speed.

This is my first event but I ride my SS at least once a week, can happily do 20-30km on a ride with it and have problems with hills in places like the Dam or Appin. Having not ridden the DW course I wondered if anyone could advise if given my info above I'd be OK on the course with SS. I'm sure I could ride it but the question is will I enjoy riding it?

Anaconda MTB Enduro - Alice Spirngs

I've entered the Anaconda MTB Enduro in Alice Spirngs which is a 5 day 7 stage event from May 10 - 14.

Great way of seeing and exploring the red centre, and see what MTB trails are on offer out there.

Is there anybody else from the area, thinking about or has entered the event ?

Has anybody done the event before, and has any tips / advice etc.

Glenrock loop suggestions?

I'm hoping to take my wife up to Glenrock for a cruisy explore on Sunday morning and was just wondering if anyone with experience has a loop that they would like to recommend to me? Are there any arrows or signposts there?
I've downloaded all of the NobMob maps to my Edge 705 and would like to piece a bit of a ride together before we head off.... I think I would be more popular if I know where I'm going.

Blackspire revisited

Since posting this last year I now find myself in a similar situation with my Shimano Hone/LX (XT compatible) crankset. The Shimano rings on it have worn more easily than I would've liked. And now, given the km's it's time to renew. LBS reckons the Blackspire middle chainring is much harder wearing than Shim one and will go on with no problem. I didn't discuss the outer chainring, but I'm guessing that this would also be true.

Has anyone had any experience good or bad putting Blackspire chainrings onto Shimano Hone/LX cranks?

Thanks
Phil

Rotorua Trip

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all

Currently planning a trip to do some riding in Rotorua in April. Basically we have 4 days arrive Friday Ride till Monday lunch, then return home Monday evening.

Anyway flights are booked, car rented so all is good on that front.

Would like to get some advice on accomodation, that is close (riding distance) to main trails (Redwoods), riding distance to pub / food. It would be great if we could get some views of one of the lakes in the area to chill out after a ride for a few beers on a deck.
