Tour De Timor - a 5 day mountain bike roadrace!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I came across this one today - a 5 day mtb race in Timor, August 24th to 28th, 2009.

It's a really interesting concept, free entry (to support tourism), a big prize pool, and several possibilities for sponsorship. It's a mix of bitumen, variable quality dirt roads and river crossings, with plenty of hills and spectacular landscape thrown in! Have a look at the course http://www.tourdetimor.com/Race-Route.php then think about what bike you'd want to take.... cyclocross, hardtail 29er with narrow tyres etc.

Manly Dam Condition?

I am visiting from overseas (U.S.) and really want to rent a bike and try the Manly Dam trail. I just got to Sydney but I noticed that it seems to have been raining for at least a day or two but there might be a few sunny days coming up. Could someone tell me how wet the trails are and if they might be rideable any time soon? Thanks!

Help please: which lefty fork?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi I'm looking to upgrade the lefty on my old faithful Jekyll 800 with a better (used) fork. I'm wondering which is the better overall package - the TPC or SPV?

Currently it has a plain vanilla 130mm Lefty with rebound adjustment only. It's rather bobby on the climbs. Not a major issue as I mostly climb seated, but I've just acquired a Manitou 3-way so i'm looking to match a fork to it.

Mellow greetings.

Hi guys. Long time lurker, first time poster. Well second time poster. I just posted something and thought it rude to post and not introduce myself.

Soooo... I'm 35, live in the Blue Mountains, ride to work in Penrith, enjoy my job, have a wife who is good value, have 2 little girls, ride off road whenever I can (which isn't enough- see previous point), and I am over searching for and cutting firewood. I know a couple of members on here but I shall not reveal who as they may not want to admit any association!

So there it is. Hi.

Hunting in National Parks

Get this... while we struggle with a little trail access, seems there is a real chance that a bill being introduced in NSW parliament next week may actually be passed and allow recreational hunting of native animals in National Parks! Are they for real!?

I wonder if hunters actually know that getting access to National Parks is pointless because they can't actually go anywhere within them! Eye-wink Oh, sorry to make a joke, but it's ironic don't you think?

Read about this and how you could help here: http://www.npansw.org.au/web/conservation/huntin...

Oppose the Game Council Amendment Bill 2009

URGENT!

In the next week (between Tue 23 and Thu 25 June 2009) the NSW Government is set to pass legislation that will:

  • allow recreational hunting in national parks
  • allow recreational hunting of native animals
  • establish private game reserves
  • undermine of feral animal control efforts across NSW.

Sadly even though this sounds unbelievable, it's actually true.

Update: The more you read about this the more disgusting it is, I'm amazed it's not been in the mainstream media. Couple stories here:

Disc brake rotors

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Well after still having problems with excessive pad wear I'm now contemplating changing disc rotors.
See my previous post for details on the pad wear problems http://nobmob.com/node/8818

A 10km ride this week on a wet track has worn through 50% of my sintered metal pads. And I certainly wasn't dragging the brakes or using them a great deal. By the end of the ride the pads had worn so much that the brake lever was squeezing all the way to the bars before the pads were engaging.

Access

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I just obtained copies of maps put out by the NPWS which apparently are the final word on MTB access. Most of the popular trails are there as MTB legal with a few notable exceptions :

1 The section of Sandy Trail West of the the Cooyong/ Neverfail is classed as a walking trail . This is disappointing as it means the 20klm loop around Duffy's Forest is no longer possible.
2 The Cullamine Trail is walking only
3 The only egress from the top of the Quarry Track is shown as direct to Mona Vale Road through the tip
4 Cowan track is walkers only

Found lost property - Manly Dam

Yesterday I found an underseat clip on bag on the Manly Dam trail containing some MTB day trip vitals (estimated total value close to $100!) to keep their owner hopefully out of trouble. If you believe this is yours, please send me a message detailing the contents of the bag for its return.

I also found a muddy soaked navy blue XL zip polo jumper with a gold energy drink logo embroided on its chest. I left it hanging on shrub branch on the downhill single trail section above Manly Dam.

Australian Alps national parks Cycling Code

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I know we've been talking about this a lot recently, but purely by chance my Google Alert (which I have set to look for various cycling related things on government sites) sent this just now:

http://www.australianalps.environment.gov.au/car...

This section is particularly unfriendly:

If cyclists are to continue to experience the pleasure of riding in relatively undisturbed areas, they will need to follow this code and limit the impact of their visit:

Running on the main Manly Dam track?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I would just like to double check to see if running along the main mountain bike track in Manly Dam is considered bad manners.

I went for a run around the circuit with plenty of light left in the afternoon, and there were a few people riding on the track. I kept well out of their way when they passed me (often moving into the bush to make sure I wasnt standing in their chosen line of attack), and when they were bogged on hills or technical sections I only passed them once they had come to a complete stop and dismounted, and with a verbal warning of what I was doing ("Excuse me, sorry").

National Parks and Wildlife Act

Thought a few people might like this, given the chat about NPWS of late.

Basically, National Parks appear to be governed by the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 No 80. It's online here:

http://www.legislation.nsw.gov.au/scanview/infor...

Some interesting parts are (and I have snipped some of the sections of course):

Tour Divide

Tour Divide is a solo, self-supported mountain bike race on all 2,745 miles of ACA's epic Great Divide MTB Route. With an average time-to-completion of three weeks in the saddle, this grand tour is the longest, most challenging MTB race on the planet. It's a contest for the ultra-fit but only if ultra-prepared for myriad contingencies of backcountry biking.

Sounds good, eh? Laughing out loud

RockShox Pike 454 v's Fox 32 Float 140RLC or....

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Looking at a couple of forks at the moment in the 140-150 mm zone, and the choice looks like a 454 Pike with 20 mm axle or a Float 32 RLC with 15 mm axle. I'm having trouble getting a clear idea of which fork better suits my needs, and only having ridden the Fox can't make a performance comparison yet. There are sooo many options in forks these days, it's almost as bad as trying to get a mobile phone what rings and takes calls.

I've got Hope II hubs so no problems with axle compatibility.

The bike these would go on has between 5.7" and 5.8" of rear travel and an RP23.
