Wingello, Penrose or other
Next week I'm in Robertson (half way between Kiama and Moss vale)
I think I can swing one full day for 'proper' mtb'ing
For someone with not much sense of direction (I can follow trails or arrows) should I head for Wingello or Penrose state forest. These are the one's that sound familiar. Or is there somewhere closer to R'son.
And where would I find some info (like maps, directions etc) on getting to and around on the trails - I have googled but not much info.
Thanks for any advice.

chain advice -
I've been mountain bike riding for a about 6 months & had my first break down, as in i couldn't ride anymore, on the track a couple of days ago.
I've snapped my chain, so thought i would replace it.
I didn't have a chain breaker or "quick link" parts with me to fix it, know next time.
My bike is a 9 speed trek with deore derailleurs, there is no damage anywhere else.
It was a SRAM chain.
All the gears are still in good shape, front chain wheel & cassette(SRAM PG950), & i lubed chain etc regularly.

MONT 2008 (the real one, not the Scott)
I haven't seen the dates for this yet but guess it's in October as usual (the end of?). I'm with a couple of guys but we're looking to build a team of 6 weekend warrior types (whippets welcome but don't expect to win given the team averages!) and looking for some game guys or gals. The new track was awesome last year and should be sweet as again this year.....Let me know if you're interested and I'll keep you posted. Entries open (and pretty much close) in June I think..

'Conservation' Hunting in NSW State Forests
This is almost unbelievable news from Huw. Basically it seems some NSW bureaucrat has decided it's fine to let hunters loose in the same state forests many of us ride our bikes in (and are also used by walkers, horse riders, etc, etc). Dunno about anyone else, but I don't fancy being shot while out riding so may I suggest some letter writing on it.
Full details from Huw below...

Front Fox shocks - leak?
Hi,
I have a relatively new Specialized stumpjumper. (approx 100km on it).
I noticed this afternoon the pressure in the front forks was super low.
On the left hand front shock I could feel a slight lubricant.
Wondering if this is a leak? I am new to the shock system and thus wondering what this might be?
I have since pumped up the shock and tested for rapid drop in pressure. I did notice it would drop about 5 psi after pumping the front fork about 10 - 20 times.
Any advice, thoughts etc would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ben

Pinch Ride Info
Rob
I am planning to do the Pinch Ride at the end of this month and would appreciate any hard worn info you could provide about the possibilty of exiting by the Native Dog Trail and pick up arrangements from the Barry Way................JONZZ

Booralie Demise
Sad times
As part of the ride today we eventually found our way to Waratah Park (aka. the Koala park - end of Namba Road, Duffys Forest). The Booralie trail was probably dissected many years ago to make way for the park, and as we note there's a dirty great electric fence around it blocking this trail. You used to be able to follow the fence line and pick up other side though.

Wild fling in the Himalayas [Nepal]
Quick update from a recent fling with the Himalayas (Nepal).
During a recent work-trip to Nepal, I was able to escape from the hustle of Kathmandu to do a short 2 days stint of serious mountain biking in the foothills of the Himalayas.
We met Tangi, a french pro-MTB rider (and local resident for the last 5 years in Pokhara) and he took us to his favourite trails for the next 2 days. He used to be a competition rider for COMMENCAL (a well-regarded MTB brand in Europe) and is sponsored by the company to teach 15 local Nepali kids to become pro-riders.

cassette sizes
folks,what is the difference between 11-28 or 11-32 in a rear cassette?is it the number of teeth and does it make much difference having an 8 speed over a 9(apart from the obvious 3 less gears),cheers.

BMX Banditry
Anyone fancy a bit of a play at the Terry Hills BMX track Saturday morning? I've no definite plans or timing in mind, just not too early.
Anyone know what sort of condition it's in at the mo?
Ta,
Matt.

Spare Parts
For this ride (and in fact all rides) what is the recommended list of spares & tools I need to carry. I normally have;
* two tubes
* a puncture kit
* spare shimano chain pins
* gold power link (I think this is what it is called)
* Alien multi-tool
* Tyre leavers
* Separate chain tool
* Pump
Is there anything else I need to add?
Cheers
Brian

New Shoes
My present SPDs partially disintegrated down at Menai on Sunday so its time to update.
What are people's opinions for some replacement cleat shoes. Budget is around $250.
I'm looking for something thats pretty robust, ok for walking through the rocks and mud (occasionally and sadly this is all too frequent).
Oh and must be orange to colour coordinate with me bike.
Nice

"Monday" - a brilliant short film about life and bikes
I came across this vid on MTBR and just had to share as i found it a wonderful little portrail into the life of bicycling/mountain biking at its core. Such a simple but extremely effective film. Hope you enjoy it:

Return to Ourimbah - XC and DH
Hi all,
Putting the feelers out for a return to Ourimbah day. Will be looking to include both the XC and DH riders out there.
For those that havent ridden at Ourimbah before, it is a challenging location that offers a great XC ride and a ripper DH.
Likley weekend would be the 15/16 March.

Greetings fellow earthlings
Hey there, new to this site, a friend of mine pointed me to it and I'm finding it a great resource. The forums are also a nice touch. I'm based in Canberra and have also only recently started riding after a 10 year break (am in late 30's). Even though I've had mountain bikes way before that I've never really taken them off road before (bit like the guy that buys a 4WD only for city use, pathetic I know).

Keys found at Manly Dam
I set of bike lock keys found on the track on Northern side of Manly Dam on Saturday 1 March.
If you've lost'em. I've got'em.
Cheers,
Tim

GNR Weather conditions
Hi
I'm off to do have my first crack at the GNR tomorrow. Does anyone know what it would be like after all this recent rain we've had?
Thanks
Phil

Efficency in cycling shoes
Ok its an obvious question here but.
Why do you get more efficiency in a pair of hard sold shoes vs a pair of shoes that flex? After all your leg is pushing downwards motion right? Is energy lost in the flexing of the shoe?? How does the energy transfer work and what's the physics behind it??
I just bought a pair of carbon soled MTB shoes (Diadora Ergo MTB shoes) my old pair was a pair of Cannondales, they flexed a lot especially when you stood up in the pedals. But when I stood up for the first time in the carbon soled shoes - geez the energy transfer was awesome!
